The world cup bandwagon

ok, so pretty much nobody gives a crap about soccer in the states for 3 years and 11 months, then when the world cup arrives, everyone gets all pumped up on soccer... seems funny how all of a sudden kids facebook status's all turn to, "OMG USA wins world cup game vs some country nobody's ever heard of!!!!", and "Watching the world cup alll day" etc. seems pretty phony and lame to hop on the bandwagon and pretend to like soccer for one month every 4 years just becasue other kids pretend to like it too.

granted, there are probably some actual fans of soccer out there, but i would say upwards of 95 percent of the world cup "fans" couldnt even name one player on the US team.

does anybody else see this occurring in their local region???

i agree, facebook status updates are fucking dumb to begin with though and it encourages stupid ass shit like this

yeah, there are a lot of people out there who are just going with the hype and the crowd, doing what everyone else is doing...as it always happens...they do it for the social aspect. I for one don't really enjoy watching soccer, but some matches are pretty exciting, though they don't happen too often. I prefer watching shit like tennis

Way to come off as elitist. I only watch soccer once every 4 years. The team I support in England's league isn't in the premiership so they don't show the games on TV. What of it? I've watched every England World Cup game since they didn't qualify back in 1994.

not to sound cliche, but the world cup is the biggest event in sports. for most of the world it goes beyond soccer. sure, not everyone in america follows soccer. european leagues are never on television, and how would you expect an average american joe to get stoked about watching milan play against madrid in some "champions league." and we all know that nobody really cares about the MLS.

of all the people that were stoked off the sports in the olympics like gymnastics, swimming, and speed skating, how many of them do you think follow the sport regularly? the world cup is the biggest stage in soccer, with the best games, and most on the line. it's fine for people to get stoked about it.

i watch gymnastics every 4 years at the summer olympics so what... its team spirit im supporting my country

Oh I am quite aware of what elitist means.
The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources. - Dictionary.com

AKA: We are true soccer fans, as someone that does not watch soccer on TV constantly throughout the year, you guys don't deserve to watch the World Cup
The "group" is true soccer fans, favored treatment is "we get to watch the world cup". And well, the perceived superiority is just obvious. I guess maybe you don't know what elitist means because that was a perfectly appropriate time to use it.

Honestly, stuff like that doesn't bother me at all. It's a good thing for the sport. What I don't like is when people try to come off as if they know sooo much about the game just from what they hear on sportscenter. But If kids' facebooks statuses say "GO USA!" Then fuck yeah. Good for them. The sport has been labeled a bitch sport for the past dozen years and now its finally in the spotlight. Its about damn time. I watch the English Premier League at school with my roommate. Its completely different than what most Americans see soccer as.

Although now that I think about it I do actually watch Euro Cup games, and the FA Cup finals whenever that comes around.
The ironic part is that half the people agreeing in this thread are probably bandwagon Chelsea or AC Milan or Arsenal supporters that have no actual connection to their team and would probably be considered "lesser" by those team's "true fans".

more people are watching it which is great for the sport, especially in a country where soccer is barely regarded. so you're basically complaining because of why? oh yeah, because you're too damned stupid and prowd to allow little things like this to happen for a chance for a sport you claim to be a "true fan" of to grow. grow up you idiot.

Ive noticed this too, doesn't annoy me as much as you but its definitely stupid. But its the same with any big sport. NBA finals everyones hopping on some bandwagon, if youre from the west LA and vise versa for boston, its just how shit is.

first of all calm down. stop trying to persuade everyone on how much you watch soccer, we dont care. second of all, I NEVER WATCH SOCCER. so you either misunderstood me or still really dont know what elitist means even after looking it up on google.

"AKA: We are true soccer fans, as someone that does not watch soccer on TV constantly throughout the year, you guys don't deserve to watch the World Cup"

I'm not a true soccer fan, obviously, and i don't agree with the second part of that sentence, so your just wrong.

AKA: im not an elitist. and chill out.

You've never heard of Slovenia, England or Algeria? Are you sure your post is complaining about the right thing?

Soccer is actually the most played youth sport in our country. However, because MLS is such a joke and never really advertised no one cares about it. Therefore, you either have Fox Soccer channel or the only soccer you get to watch is the world cup. Soccer is by far my favorite team sport and Ive been playing it for over 10 years, but I never have a chance to watch it the world cup is all I have. Im not quite so ignorant as the kids your referring to seeing as I can name the entire starting US squad.

Yeah posting a definition and explaining it is me TOTALLY freaking out. Thank god you told me to chill out before I started looking at a thesaurus. And saying that I only watch soccer once every 4 years is for sure how I try to convince people I watch a lot of it.

you cant really blame people for being excited when donovan puts in the game winner in the 91st minute though, especially after all the shit that the team has gone thought with bs calls

i'm so stoked on the world cup cause soccer is super popular everywhere BUT the US, so even if people are just becoming interested im happy to see any interest expressed at all, it would just be cool if it lasted once the cup is over but i seriously doubt that will happen

yeah. its kinda true. but i still think its a good thing that soccer is getting some of the recognition it deserves in the states. its popularity has truly increased in the past few years so don't get hostile with people whose interest may actually be sparked by the world cup

also go hull city tigers. word.

who cares its all about supporting your country. just like the olympics i bet you cheered and talked about phelps 8 gold medals for a while but i bet you dont watch every swimming match of his. its having pride in your country.

That is retarded. If you truly love a sport and want to see it grow and progress, you'd better hope to God that people who know basically nothing about your sport are watching.

How can people help it? It's not like soccer is EVER publicized any time but World Cup time anyway.

Yeah bro, and your sarcasm meter is working quite well. You even disregarded the quotation marks which were a trap to through people off his real meaning. He stands by what he says 100%.

Seriously are some of you fags offended by this? More people in America watching soccer is fine in my eyes, as it will hopefully lead to us having a respectable league in the states and more main stream soccer coverage.

this sums up exactly how i feel.....one of my facebook friends is just like this, and now he is trying to organize a soccer league every week for us college kids to be in, except last year, and next year, he doesn't care about soccer. and yea. everytime there is a call, his facebook status changes. ive since blocked his stuff from showing up on facebook.

I don't follow soccer at all, but I tried to get pumped up for the world cup so I'd have something to be stoked about this summer. I'd love to get be a bandwagon fan, because it's actually a pretty cool event. But every time I went to do research on the world cup and the American team I ended up watching ski videos on NS instead. So now I don't really care about the world cup, and I just want to go skiing more.

You hit the nail on the head my good man. A global tournament like this transcends the usual pay for play competition (which takes place mostly outside of the US anyway)....and with a lot more national passion. Plus it's on tv! Speaking of which we need more European League games on US television year round. Hopefully there is more demand for it someday.

its just like the olympics. does anybody really care about figure skating, sprinting, gymnastics, cross country skiing etc besides 1 month every 4 years?just let people enjoy it for 1 month then you can go back to watching soccer by yourself you soccer guru you

If you've watched the last two matches, then you'd understand why people suddenly care. They are getting behind their country, and the games have also been exciting.

I haven't cared about soccer for the last 4 years, except for Euro 2008, and the confed cup. I used to care when I played soccer, following the US and Holland since 1998. I have a feeling a lot of other people followed soccer back in the day when they played, lost touch with it, and are getting excited about it again.

exactly. i am a soccer fan, and i follow the italian league and the EPL. just let people enjoy watching their country. that's what is great about sports, everyone can come together and root for a common cause. who cares if they don't know shit about the sport, it's still fun to go nuts when we score

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing as the OP and was about to call someone out for having never played soccer and openly saying they didn't like soccer, while still going crazy about Ghana on their facebook status. But, I figured that since I'm usually trying to convince people like them how sick soccer is, why not just accept the popularity boost the World Cup brings to soccer and not contradict what I would usually support, just because everyone's doing it. - In short, skiierman is spot on.

exactly. its like in skiing. i'm not a fan of kids who just start and are massive fans of andy perry and tom wallisch but have no idea about any of the OGs but fuck it. its better than being the only park skier at my resort. more money and attention = more money and opportunities for the sport.
