The world cup bandwagon

exactly. out of all the kids watching soccer now, at least a few will continue to watch, and become fans, growing the sport around here
 
Watching the World Cup or the Olympics or any true international sporting competition has almost nothing to do with the actual sport being played at the moment. It has everything to do with wanting your country to lay a smack down on someone else's country. Almost everyone getting hyped about the World Cup in the USA does not watch soccer regularly, but they just want their country to do well on an international stage... and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, I would argue that it is a good thing to support your fellow country men (and women if we go back to the Olympics thing).
 
I agree, unlike the Olympics the World Cup is about the sport, not silly patriotic fanaticism. I'm anxious for all the (American) plastics to fuck off from the sport.
 
Didn't read the thread, but I have followed this world cup somewhat, and even watched a few US games. I watch because I want to cheer on my country.
 
omg /facepalm, why wouldn't they it only happens every 4 years its just like the Olympics and it actually matters not like just a normal club match that nobody cares about. Nobody cares about any of the Olympic sports until the Olympics i mean it makes sense .
 
i didnt read any of the thread besides the OP. but i play soccer and love it, and im psyched when people who arent usually into it get into it. how is that a negative thing? GET FUCKING PSYCHED IT'S THE WORLD CUP BRO
 
similar situation here, but I hope those who jump on the bandwagon stay on and develop a passion and love for the sport which so many of us football fans have.

it can be a little annoying but you educate the newbs really...

 
I've never given a fuck about sports, let alone invested more than a half-second glance at the television to see if something interesting was on. Does this mean I'm cool?
 
It just annoys me to see the fb status updates.."GOALLLL GO USAA" like shit like that. there are some serious bandwagon jumpers at my school. the worst came around with the nba finals with the lakers bandwagon too
 
US so soccer sucks. Unless yer able watch english premiere league and stuff most Americans don't get to see quality soccer, which makes a lot of kids I know hate it. I love the game, and its nice to see it get some recognition
 
I don't think people are hopping on the bandwagon to be a "soccer fan", I think it's simply because it's an event that happens every 4 years and they are supporting their country.
It's the same as the Olympics, once every four years (actually every 2, but it's different because it's winter and summer Olympics). You think there are a ton of people who follow badminton, table tennis, fencing, and archery? No, but when the competitions are happening you support your country in those events.
by the way, I stopped reading the thread once it turned to shit, so sorry if somebody already mentioned this.
 
you have no idea about the world cup bandwagon in the states, because you have a team to cheer on. i don't watch curling, but when its olympics time, i'm cheering on canada like no other. but when it comes to world cup time, all i see its kids who magically own a brazil or portugal jersey and talk about the world cup standings like they know every team when they're really only going to watch the final. that's the real bandwagon.

This is a damn good thing for the sport. As someone said earlier, MLS is mostly a joke nowadays. This has revitalized interest in soccer now which is good for the sport.

Fact is who really honestly gives a shit. It's like the Olympics. Does anyone REALLY care about curling here? Or Ice Skating? No, but we still generally watch it and cheer for our countries.
