The Subaru Forester thread

Um not really... a forester is clearly designed with higher ground clearance than a standard car to allow it to go over rougher ground. There is no point lowering a forester and removing it's main benefit. If you wanted a performance car you clearly wouldn't have bought a forrester in the first place.

If you have a street car that you take to track days etc then there is a clear benefit to lowering it a bit for increased handling.

IMO lowering a car for looks is a waste of money and is a game for rich kids with nothing better to do.

And to answer the thread, I'd buy one if I needed the room. If you're looking for a good looking car I'd save the money you're planning on spending on lowering the forester and put it towards a nicer looking car from stock.

Why not look at a legacy wagon if you want a subaru. Still got way more room than an imprezza hatch but looks better than a forester.

i have an 07 forester. came with tint, not lowered though, because..well why would you? I got it because I drive in the snow a lot..fuck you haterz

When my Forester is packed to the brim with me, four friends, and all of their shit, I'm glad I went with the extra room. Not to mention I have the large THULE. I'm not exaggerating either... the whole cargo area has been completely filled floor-to-ceiling on many an occasion. It does hurt that I could have bought a WRX wagon in stick from a similar year for cheaper, and since I rolled my Forrester (and still drive it) I think I'll be downsizing to the WRX once my money is in line.

Dude your an idiot. Just because you buy a truck doesn't mean your gonna lift it and take It muddin everytime it rains.. Sure it is higher for rougher ground but it doesn't mean you are going on rough ground. And In no way is its height the main benefit..

IMO foresters are a completely pointless car. and even more pointless/retarded when people lower them. they suck at driving on the road. they handle like shit, dont really do anything very well when it comes to driving on dry road. which would be fine if it were an SUV that was capable offroad. but its not. they suck ass off road. so its the worst of both worlds. sucks offroad, and sucks on road. then you lower it and it sucks more at both. really, its a fucking minivan, thats more square.

if you want something with the cargo capacity of a forrester, get a wagon if you want it to drive well on road. get an SUV if you want it to drive well offroad.

eehhhh yeah but subarus already lack ground clearance (for having the reputation of being good in the snow) so dropping one even further is really pushing it's snow-drivablility

i bet you've never even driven one. if they suck off road, why do they rally them? if they suck on the road, why do they kick ass in drag races?

yeahhhh, people rally forresters huh? and drag race? you can make a fucking minivan accelerate fast. and i have driven one, an xt, it was a numb piece of shit, soft and had terrible understeer. subaru's in general dont drive that great on road, and the forester is worse than most.

I recently had a really sick 04 wrx that i totaled and im looking at getting an xt, however i cant decide between getting an xt and lowering it and doing the engine work and body work to make it a good looking fast car ( they have 210hp stock). Or if i should just spend all the money in the begining and get an sti? Any thoughts?

What years are you talking about?

Never understood the hate. Always seems to come from the street racing bro douches.

I really like the one my family owns, but I wish the drivetrains were more durable. We are on our second or third transmission and our third rear differential. This is an 05 that was bought new and never abused.

Jesus PFO... Please tell me that you at least put some serious mileage because that is fucked.

Anything outside of the Impreza line doesn't handle the same way... so if what you liked about your WRX was the handling/cornering/acceleration, you'll be slightly disappointed with the bigger Subarus. Although if you're going to do all that work, it might be better - I can't really say. Getting an STi is way less work if all you want is something fun to drive and you don't need the extra space - buy roof bars and a Thule and you're good to go. Having had an '02, '07, '09 WRX, and driven my siblings '09 STi and '09 Legacy, I've enjoyed the WRX line the most. Still driving my '02 (>199000 miles). Much more room in the back seat of the Legacy, but it is not nearly as fun to drive.

Not sure if in the US you can buy manual Outbacks/Foresters?

Anyway, I understand the whole caring about what other people think of your car thing, but honestly, what I care about most is that it is fun to drive in all conditions. If you're worried about people thinking the Forester is a dyke car, and that's the only reason you're doubting it, then that's silly.

i honeslty like the foresters over any other suabru. its more unique and all in all is a better car stock

They are lesbian / hippy transporters but if its youre thing, power to you. Personally I think they suck, but I would go as far to say subaru sucks in general. Subaru is not some rally superpower anymore so do not pretend they are great off roading. Even if they were rallying super stars it does not mean anything in regards to off roading potential, if you had ever watched a rally you would realize it is pretty much a gravel road they drive super fast on, its not really that difficult of terrain. Many of the top semi pro and AM level rally outfits use FWD or RWD cars... many honda civics are used in rallying.... does that make them off roading masters as well?

you all lose

i would say your pocket book loses when you start paying for repairs on your car. Your engine is made out of glass. Dont get me wrong, I fucking love Allroads but you are in for a world of hurt when you need to start spending money when it needs to stay on the road. It is pretty much universally accepted your turbo chargers will blowup before you roll over 150k miles.

So much fail in this thread.

Foresters are great cars. They are reliable, are very surefooted and will go pretty much anywhere you point it, whether it be snow, mud or rain. or a combination of all three.

So why in the FUCK would you EVER lower one? Its akin to lowering a truck. So with that said....

....Have fun shelling out a couple grand for the lowering job to be done right.....Or don't, you could instead have fun being a cheapskate and have shit break on you before you even hit 500 miles on your new shitmobile.

Have fun tearing your bumper off, fucking up your exhaust or oil pan by pulling out of the gas station or going over a speed bump.

Have fun not being able to handle any kind of extreme weather/ shitty road conditions.

Have fun looking like a total fuckboy while you do all the above because 99 times out of 100 whatever SUV/truck you've lowered looks like a rolling turd.

I will agree that subarus arent that good and out of the factory they arent rally ready and foresters are quite dykey. But youre fucking stupid to say its not difficult terrain. Its extremely loose gravel and theyre going over 80mph with tires almost always spinning going around tight corners with trees or cliffs around them. If youve ever been to rally stage event youd notice..hmmmm a lot of these people are using subarus and mitsubishis. at least in the US overseas its more citroens and renaults but they awd swap them sometimes...people dont off road subarus necessarily they go on dirt roads and try to pull some david higgins shit

Yes, I'm not about to go serious "off roading" in my wrx, but it's sure as hell fun to rip along the Tall Pines course when they've laid new gravel (watch out for deers though). Everyone has their own preference for cars, and different expectations depending on where you live/what you do.

On another note, is anyone else sad that Mitsubishi is getting out of rallying? So much for the Subie-Mitsu rivalry.

Get a 2002 forester. They have the wrx engine and turbo in them and they don't look like complete boats like the xt's

I think youre talking out of your ass at this point. It is a gravel road... which is loose gravel which is exactly what I said earlier. Rally stages are not the fucking DAKAR, they are not some great off roading challenge... they take place on snow, dirt, loose gravel or tarmac. Subaru has not had a real bread winning rally car for quite some time seeing as high level rally racing is almost dead at this point.. hence the sudden fad of rallycross racing. Rallying fell apart roughly 3 -4 years ago on a professional level when there was no broadcasting rights for the WRC series so all the car markers dropped out of the series and all that was left was loeb against the fords. Loeb has smashed all rally records in his little french econoboxes ... does that make them rally king cars?

Most grassroots rally teams cannot afford "mad tyte subbies" and use FWD early/ mid 90's japanese cars like honda civics and the occasional mk2 - mk4 Jettas.

Dont get me wrong, I grew up watching rallying in the early morning hours when I was young, I would get up at 4 in the morning to watch WRC because that was the only time it was on. I used to think subaru was the shit when I was a newcomer to the sport of rally but quickly realized subaru has had no glory since the burns and mcrae days which was many years ago, they dropped out of WRC due to lack of results many times in recent history.

I work in motorosports for a living..... this is my shit. It pays my bills.

Getting a 99 forester from my grandpa. Stoked!

I think the only ones that look good particularily lowered are ones around this era. The new ones look to big and mom like.
