The NS karma system is stupid.

Now, before you read this thread, consider who is posting and whether you care or not. I, evan heath, don't care what you think about me or my status on NS.

Furthermore onto the topic of this thread, that the NS karma system is stupid.

What is karma?

It means basically what you do to other basically effects what other people do to you. On NS, it goes whatever you do to other people they base how they feel about you on a 0-10 scale. This seems to be good for NS, but they also include things that don't include what people think at all, like posts, pictures, videos, blogs, etc.

Now does this system work? In a way it seems to be effecting the less-intelligent-kids-who-care-about-their-internet-rep and is being mocked by more intelligent-kids-who-don't-giva-fuck.

I think it doesn't.

I will use myself, eheath, as an example. Originally joined as pussyfooter in april of 2004, i accumulated almost 23,000 posts until september of 2008, over 4 years. I went through many stages of hate and love with NS and lets say made more than a few enemies on the way.

Now, checking my profile my karma is around 58,000. But yet, so many people dislike me, last i checked before i got banned, i was at a memeber rating of around 1-2 out of 10. Shouldn't my overall karma be effected more? Yes.

Say a member says to another "hey you suck! fuck you!" and the other says "omg - karma" he may loose like 100 points total on his karma, depending on who gives him negative karma. This is just not enough i think.

But, even though it does so little, it seems to be poping up in every thread title imaginable. "help! + karma" or "what should i do? omg +k!" I mean shit, people don't even say karma anymore, they just say "k". How can such an small thing effect so mant people that a nick name is created because they say it so often?

It seems that the NS karma system needs to be changes or removed completely. It should either:

a. have more effect from memebers, like 80-90% of ones karma should be what other people rate them, then some people might actually give a shit if they hate on someone.

or

b. completely removed and have a new system made.

I like the idea of karma, just at the current time is is absolutely worthless and is just annoying. Please, ns, let us rally for a new system.

Thank you if you actually read, word.

Cliff notes: fuck off.

i think you are just bitter because your karma is at 81. but i dont even know you sooooooo yeahhhhhhh

karma doesn't mean a thing. if your'e on this site enough you know who is legit and who is a fuck head.

Can you read? Nope, you probably don't have the attention span to actually read what i wrote. Please do yourself a favor and read it, you'll realize how hard you just failed.

not trying to be a douche who just says gay idea or something like that, but i just don't really care enough about karma. if they redid the system and made it "fair," i still wouldn't care. maybe most other people would though, i don't know.

i read it but my mind was somewhere else i think. maybe thats why i did so shitty in high school.

+k for being a rebel!!!111!!!1!1

evan i'm with you, although it IS true that if you've been on here long enough you know who is a dickhead and who is an intelligent dickhead. karma only helps to a certain extent.

The karma system is bullshit.

It's just a fucking number.

It gives people who were somehow hurt on a ski forum a weapon to retaliate someone else's internet credibility/feelings.

Say what you want regardless of the consequences, it's just a fucking number.

i think ns should have a +/- system of karma

where it shows +(how many people have given you +k)and -(how many people have given you -K), but keep +and- separate. Also, karma should not be added just for logging in

karma should be like the rep system on nsmb which works way better, the higher rep u have, the more rep u can give others, the lower rep u have, the less rep u will give others, it encourages people to make usefull posts, also it doesnt matter if u post video or photo content at all, ps, mods let eheath have his account back, and emopoppins, cmon, i think these boys have learned their lessons

it gives you a rating 1-10 if you click on your profile you can see that. soo its pretty much how it works.

^Yep
and if you, evan heath don't give a fuck about karma
what is causing you to care enough to make a thread on it

I don't really right now because the system sucks, if it changed and was legit i may. I'm also really bored and making a post about my thoughts sounded fun.

you also missed the fact the people who do team updates get huge karma boosts, even if they're just advertising, despite a lot of these people never contributing to the site as a normal member would (i.e. tons have under 100 posts).

and for the record, i gave up on the karma system right after they switched it over to this new BS, the old one seemed to work a lot better with a rating out of 100. the old one did have a few obvious omissions (for example rowen was low), but for the most part reflected people's contributions fairly well.

KARMA RULEZ MY LIFE DONT TALK ABOUT IT LIKE THAT BITCH!

No im joking haha, when i asked NS to get my Karam to 0 they didnt, so now i hate Karma, lifes a bitch.

the karma system is too easily abused by people. I have a feeling people just rate people not based on how they are as a member, but just what people think. For example. I made a thread with a bunch of obama videos, with some very sarcastic jokes, that were blatant. kids couldnt figure out the sarcasm, and because of that thread my karma went downhill fast, with tons of obama people giving me karma because of the post. It wasn't a bad post or contribution either. I just have the feeling people are like, "fuck, im giving you negative karma points cause you dont have the same views as me." Its not just obama people either, dont think thats what im saying. I can really see a lot of people just using the system in that type of a way.

Also all the +k threads are FUCKING ANNOYING

Ya I agree, I don't think it really means that much. I wasn't aware that posting pics and blogs and such raised your karma. That doesn't make much sense to me.

I've been kinda confused about the karma system before. Looking at myself for example, I have like 7700 karma points, but in my profile the others rate me on average at an 8.46/10.00. Seems with such a high average rating it would mean better karma, no? I could really care less I just don't understand how the system works and don't really see it having any effect.

yeah i just kind of ignore the whole karma thing. ive given some people +k, but i dont think ive ever done the -k. but really karma doesnt affect anything i do on ns. i know who i e-respect

haha, i just wanted to say how hilarious to see snobunny tell heath he's whoring up her thread (about the animals) when almost every second post in that thread is her saying something utterly pointless.

oh and yeah, karma's gay.

if you post shit your karma doesnt go down but you might just get banned at one point

gawd some kids are sooo immature on this site but i totally agree with what you have to say that this karma system is very ineffective....props for giving it a shot but now is time to modify it to make it better...just like the rest of the site has seen

THE KARMA SYSTEM ONLY SUCKS WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE ANY.. and nice to see taylib hoppin up on the heathmobile like what!!! honestly everyone wants to be known on this site, let the kids with high karma enjoy their elite status and let the rest of us kids who try to be as negative as possible rep our low ratings with pride!

NS NEGATIVITY CAMPAIGN 2008.

i agree that if your exchange rating is at 1 your karma should be in the low hundreds but if one noob lowers your karma, should you really expect it to drop by a significant amount?
basically only noobs care about karma, i used to, now i don't care, i'll let people judge me based on my feedback and posts not by some number next to my name, it's a shame so many people base their feelings off member karma

I like karma in that it shows me that I'm helping people, as does feedback. In that regard, I like it and care.

As for my rating itself, I don't really care, but to see it go up tells me that I made quality contributions and helped someone out.

Heath, I used to really hate you. I found out who you were while you were busy being a shit head. This is a semi-useful post from you. Good work, seriously. I like that you care about the site and where its headed.

For now, though, we have no better system of rating members than what's already in place. Yes, its true, I like the karma system and care, I admit it. So what? What are you going to do, -k zomg? I bet a good number of the kids who post in this thread saying "I don't care" actually do and just don't want to divulge that weakness.

And yes, I think it has made a difference in the way people post. I watch the noobs post shit, figure out what karma is, and care about it, upping their post content. I think it has helped.

That's what I have to say.

Cliff Notes: Hi.

Yeah, it seems to me like the people that notice their karma and think before they post hate are the people that wouldn't post a bunch of blatant hate anyway. And likewise, the people that always have nothing to contribute to a thread and fill it up with garbage generally don't give a shit about karma, so it doesn't work very well to prevent hate. I use karma pretty regularly myself, but it's just a number, so no one should take it that seriously. If it was reliable, and I could tell if a person was legit or an asshole just by looking at their karma, then it would be a perfect system, but that's a pretty high goal to reach.
