The future of NS

Hey guys,

As I'm sure you're aware, Newschoolers.com barely makes enough money to get by. With the recent burst in traffic (we're getting over 700,000 hits a day), it's soon going to be impossible to keep the site online for the full month. We may have to resort to certain sections only being available on certain days, etc.

I recently realised that with those generic ads like the ones you see on search engines (no popups!!), we could make enough money to effectively keep the site online, and we could put on more events, like the one we did at Kissing Bridge last weekend. We'd be able to put events on in the west like you guys have been asking, and we could have many more contests.

I'm just posting this to find out what you guys think. We want to keep the site core, and we will continue to support the companies that we know are backing the industry, but given that the site may not be here in a couple of months if we run out of money, we are looking into going with a generic ad system.

We'd love to hear what you guys think about this. This could be the exact thing that NS needs to ensure it's survival until it can sustain itself using only core companies.

i think that you could fit a lot more ads on the site w/o taking anything away. upper right corner above logout could fit an ad and after logging out a random ad could be shown.

Of course, no one is against you making money and it wouldn't be too hard to put in ads. Just one request, no disturbing ads like vaginal yeast infection creams and penis enlargers and stuff.

just no pop ups please. You guys must put an incredible amount of time and money into the site and you deserve to make some money from it.

You could sell every members email to spam companies... I'm sure they'd LOVE that :-) (jokes.)

Uh, but in regards to bandwidth... what about if you took the videos section off completely and made it still possible to post video, but you'd have to provide your own host. Or at least, for the video, make it so that they download via FTP instead of HTTP, and limit the amount of users that can download at one time. Or possibly make some sort of queueing for downloading (like fileshack and fileplanet do)

Also, perhaps on certain days you could limit the amount of users online? or disable guest viewing at peak times? I dunno, just pointless rambling, take it as you wish.

i dont know if this would help or if it would be possible at all, but deleting inactive accounts may save something or another... im sure outta the 20000 or so members, there are like 1000 alone made to cheat on the skier stock exchange, and then people who have left would account for another like 3000... im sure it would somehow help...

i don't see anything wrong with other ads. like erich said. just put them at the bottum of the page so they aren't really in the way. and to the guy who was talking about deleting inactive members, we've talked about this a few times before. it doesn't save that much at all.

i agree with everyone, i don't really care about ads unless it's a popup. you bring me so much joy you deserve to make some money. i also think people should provide their own hosts for vids. that's gotta take up the most bandwith.

I'm finally not broke, so I'm sending cash soon, I PROMISE. As for generic ads, do what you need to do to make sure NS stays around.

Now kids, don't flame me for my next idea...:

Why not take some of snowboard.com's ideas? 400 000+ members, people are stoked to use it, and it's not in danger of 'going out of business'. It's called MEMBERSHIP, as in kids send the site operators MONEY, somewhere along the lines of $15-$20(I have NO idea what snowboard.com costs, so I'm throwing out 15-20 as a complete guess), and that money is used to keep the site going, as is any money that is brought in by advertising. It's one sure way of assuring yourself a supply of cash, and the more people sign up, the more cash you get. Have a 'free' membership, with limited service, and a 'premium/paid for membership' with access to EVERYTHING newschoolers.com has to offer. Make up/steal/copy a few extra ideas and you won't have a problem justifying the expense. You can also choose to make it a time limited membership(monthly, yearly, etc.) or a one time fee. And if membership is an option, try not to forget/piss off the people that were around in the beginning/people that bring a lot of GOOD content to the site, and give them free memberships.

Of course I don't know if membership is where you want newschoolers.com to go. Just an idea that could be worth considering.

I think ads will work. Membership is just a pain in the ass. We'll lose alot of people just because they're lazy, not because they're poor.

i agree with jonas with on the whole membership thing. and also part of the appeal of newschoolers is that it's free.

i like the ad idea. it sounds like you guys have thought this through. do what you can.

Would it be possible to have a page just plastered with ads right after we log in and then we can bypass it and be done with them? It is cool to see the PBP and Level 1 Productions adds but I don't think I could handle adds for hidden cameras and orbitz.com like every other site. Just after we log in or something have a page with just adds on it and a link saying 'continue to main page' or whatever. Well thats only my opinion, what does everyone else think?

i just say put them at the very bottom just like the ones that you have at the top, but keep the ones at the top have to do with skiing. put all the vaginal fluid ones down at the very bottom. hell half the time there are so many people on the site now that you don't go all the way to the bottom.

Harvey, do whatever YOU feel needs to be done. obviously, being addicted as we all are, we'll go along with it.

i dont think ads would be bad at all, you could even have a link to the 'ads' page, that way no one would have to see them, lol

membership fees i think would change the site's integrity.

i'm down with whatever you choose.

maybe start by making donations a bigger deal? put more ads for it, on the home page, etc. the more it gets out there, the more chance you have of people sending it

also, if you don't go with andy's ideas of people providing their own hosting for videos and pics, what about 'cleaning' out old threads like every month or so. have all the mods, and a few dedicated members just work on it for an hour or whatever. a lot could be done, and a lot of useless stuff could be gotten rid of that wasusing perfectly good bandwith

i think what might help is to have a couple of core members in each area try and put together a few events to help raise some cash for the site.

ex: have a pub night where we talk to the bar owner and see if we can work out something so that we get the door money. our fraternity does it all the time and we easily make around $500 net profit a night.

oh yeah, boatertalk.com did something like this a while ago to raise some money... get ski companies to donate skis and gear, and then NS could auction it off. boatertalk had no trouble getting most of the major kayak companies to donate a boat, and those retail for like $1000. its really good publicity for the companies. i'm sure companies like Armada or Line would donate some skis for an auction. with all the reps and atheltes on here it shouldn't be too hard to set up. just a thought.

I hope you guys realize that Harvey isn't talking about MAKING money here... He's talking about pulling even. It's very hard to pull a profit off the site, the way it is now.

We can stand the generic banners, and, if it was necessary to keep NS alive, I could stand a pop-up or two. But, of course, the other alternatives need to be followed... maybe selling more stuff through the store (a risky endeavor for sure), and of course getting more donations. We should have a new donation drive.

just a note to people thinking there is a lot of money in our end of the ski industry, quite the contrary. Most of the money is still in the racing/rec area of skiing and freestyle is a VERY small portion of that. Matt check your messages I sent you one with some ideas that might help out.

The amount of pictures and videos and stuff isn't the problem, it's the amount that they're downloaded. So deleting old stuff doesn't fix the problem at all.

Thanks for the suggestions though... clicking banners generates money yes... just click the ones that look interesting. :)
