It’s not that huge rails and huge cliffs aren’t skiing in my opinion, but I think that they overlook a very important part, creativity. This creative aspect is what I love about skiing; it’s what makes it artistic. Without this aspect it’s just a sport, like baseball, a competition to see who can do the biggest spin longest rail most technical grind ect. Not to say the sport part going huge ect. should be erased, but that another dimension can be added to it. Style is a part of this, but not the whole picture. Style right now in skiing seems to be all about smoothness, once the definition is broadened to encompass creativity in style as well that part will be more complete in my opinion. For example thinking of a new way to do a 360 safety grab just thinking out of the box. One thing I feel that has limited skiing in this aspect is refusal to experiment with things that may look sketchy and unsmooth at first or just plain different. People are much to ready to dismiss something just because it doesn’t fit exactly to what the communities views are at the time. Nothing will ever look how it can first try. Another thing I would love to skiing focus upon more is creativity in what is being skied and what approach or way an obstacle, plane, or line is taken. This seems to be very foreign to the ski world for many reasons but the most obvious I find is the very nature of snow. We have been accustomed to molding features for us to hit, and because of this, only hit them the way they where made to be hit. I love figuring a way to hit things in a completely different way.
Style seems almost conforming the sport at this point, because we are afraid to try stuff if it may be deemed ugly. Once we can understand this, and mesh both style creativity and balls, skiing will truly advance in my opinion. This will also separate a group of skiers from the rest. There are so many skiers at this point that are extremely talented that an evolution of this sort will sort out the ones that are not only talented but also are able to have a vision of what they want to do while skiing. It’s not easy to be able to see things that have not been done before then execute them to perfection. It’s not just landing that sw rodeo 7 perfect every time, it is something different. The tricks that encompass unique style creativity and balls all at once are the tricks that are truly amazing, because not only does the viewer think, “that was crazy, id be too scared, or that would be so hard,” but the viewer also thinks, “what I have never seen that before, and how did he think that shit up?” Few tricks or skiers have really pushed this in this way yet. Pollard is one exception, as well as pep sometimes and Charles shows flashes at some points but not exactly how I view it. When it really comes down to it, I try to ski with 2 things in mind, one, to have fun, two, have a vision of what I’m trying to impress upon the viewer and the ski world as I ski. Feel free to disagree.
