The "evolution" of skiing

i just wanted to take a minuete to reply to the "whats happening" thread someplace other than at the bottom of it. I think that we need to get away from the knarly rails and the huge cliffs. Yes, they are fun and i love them just as much as you. But is sliding metal and freefalling into piled up snow with no intention of landing really skiing? Since when have we gotten away from carving and powder? I agree rails and cliffs are a rush, but they should really be a seperate sport. Small cliffs that you land are okay and then keep skiing, but landing 10 ft deep into snow is not skiing.

WEll see at least the people who can ski the big cliffs can def. ski big mountain in general damn good. Im not saying there are no adreniline junkies, but it seems like most are very talented.

I agree that it should be a different sort of sport. Its not exactly progression, not at all regression, rather it builds off to the sides, then moves up much like normal skiing has.

It’s not that huge rails and huge cliffs aren’t skiing in my opinion, but I think that they overlook a very important part, creativity. This creative aspect is what I love about skiing; it’s what makes it artistic. Without this aspect it’s just a sport, like baseball, a competition to see who can do the biggest spin longest rail most technical grind ect. Not to say the sport part going huge ect. should be erased, but that another dimension can be added to it. Style is a part of this, but not the whole picture. Style right now in skiing seems to be all about smoothness, once the definition is broadened to encompass creativity in style as well that part will be more complete in my opinion. For example thinking of a new way to do a 360 safety grab just thinking out of the box. One thing I feel that has limited skiing in this aspect is refusal to experiment with things that may look sketchy and unsmooth at first or just plain different. People are much to ready to dismiss something just because it doesn’t fit exactly to what the communities views are at the time. Nothing will ever look how it can first try. Another thing I would love to skiing focus upon more is creativity in what is being skied and what approach or way an obstacle, plane, or line is taken. This seems to be very foreign to the ski world for many reasons but the most obvious I find is the very nature of snow. We have been accustomed to molding features for us to hit, and because of this, only hit them the way they where made to be hit. I love figuring a way to hit things in a completely different way.

Style seems almost conforming the sport at this point, because we are afraid to try stuff if it may be deemed ugly. Once we can understand this, and mesh both style creativity and balls, skiing will truly advance in my opinion. This will also separate a group of skiers from the rest. There are so many skiers at this point that are extremely talented that an evolution of this sort will sort out the ones that are not only talented but also are able to have a vision of what they want to do while skiing. It’s not easy to be able to see things that have not been done before then execute them to perfection. It’s not just landing that sw rodeo 7 perfect every time, it is something different. The tricks that encompass unique style creativity and balls all at once are the tricks that are truly amazing, because not only does the viewer think, “that was crazy, id be too scared, or that would be so hard,” but the viewer also thinks, “what I have never seen that before, and how did he think that shit up?” Few tricks or skiers have really pushed this in this way yet. Pollard is one exception, as well as pep sometimes and Charles shows flashes at some points but not exactly how I view it. When it really comes down to it, I try to ski with 2 things in mind, one, to have fun, two, have a vision of what I’m trying to impress upon the viewer and the ski world as I ski. Feel free to disagree.

man i agree and disagree with you, i think that we shouldnt focus on bigger and bigger jumps but i also think that those are how we can progress the sport, i like to do bigmountian and park and moguls and pow and bc, i like everything and i think thats how skiing should be, a little of everything

The thing that I hate about skiing right now is how we are all trying to segment it into smaller pieces. I find no point in this at all. If someone has skis straped to their feet and they love how they are using them we should not care, but rather embrace it. Personally, I love skiing big mountain and pow but cliffs are right up their with it. If some one came up to me after I dropped a big cliff and said "You are not skiing" or dissed me in some sort of way I would actually just be rather confused.

We need to look at skiing as a whole. That is one of the main reason's I think snowboarding is ahead of skiing (and please do not bash on me for that comment). You see so much respect in that sport for legends and the ones who are progressing everyday weither it be in the mountains, on cliffs, or on that tiny single kink at a random school. When you claim that a certain part of skiing should be excluded you are really going against what skiing is all about, individual creativity.

How many people hate on Jamie Pierre for dropping 250 foot cliffs? But do you ever think he cares what people say? NO...

Now why?...Because he loves what he is doing and that really is the only thing that matters.

Just step back and look at how diverse this sport is and have respect for the people who push their personal boundaries. They have been questioned on what they are doing (most likely) but they are the ones who are constantly evolving. Just be happy that you are a part of a sport that shows personal style and brings a smile to every person who engages in it, no matter where they live.

Well your kinda right, in my opinion. Skiing is getting way away from the park these days and into big lines. I mean its still great and harder then just straight up park skiing, but i think skiing needs to go back to the park, Freesking that is. Its cool that tanner and cr and others are hucking cliffs now w/ 3s and 7's ya know but i would like to see park skiing a lot more, not that we dont see a lot of it but i think it would be good to go back to where newschool skiing began.

^^newschool skiing did not begin in the park it began in the moguls

newschool skiing is alot older than CR and Tanner "douche bag rapist asshole" Hall...

Man Ballet Skiing is called skiing, how come sliding a rail or dropping cliffs on skis shouldn't be called skiing? I think that's the worst part of our sport, like you gotta do exact stuff to be considered skiing, fuck off...when you're doing something on skis it's called skiing, it could be buttering on a rail, droping a 200 cliff or going 40mph down a 60 degree slope... and I'm sticking to freeskiing.

insted of spliting sking up into "diffrent sports" i think the park, carving, back country hits, Clffs and BC . should be viewed as one.

(on another note) i think that the getto style of sking is the wrong way. for example: tanner hall acts like a wigger (i respect his skills dont get me wrong)but as soon as he stops sking i just dont want to see him any more. its just the way that he carrys himself embarrasses me when some one who dosent know the sking worl makes a jujment on his example of what the avrage newschooler is like. IDK

ParkRats are the only ppl that cant ski they live in the park and thur all over but they sux at the skiing part

progression - the act of moving forward toward a goal

dictionary.com

so somebody saying that a crazy rail or a huge cliff isn't progression and just stupid is completely wrong. my goal in skiing is to have fun while pushing myself to try new things.

how bout we don't try to tell other people what to do but we just do what makes us happy....

i like to do that when i ski.

and there is nothing better then hitting a massive jump and being in the air or greasing a massive 5 kink rail there is no better feeling then that...

to me at least

im shure it's different for you guys
