The Culture of Ignorance

Yeah, I addressed this in the original post. How modern media and the Internet are bringing these people's opinions out loud and proud in the open.

The worst part about the media/internet allowing these typically uninformed opinions to be so readily heard is that it promotes the spread of these ignorant views. The simple truth is that the more most people hear something said, the more likely they are to believe it and with the ease of access to any viewpoint on any subject, it really isn't hard for someone to convince themselves that their ideas must be right because they found so many other people on the internet or heard so many other people on MSNBC, FoxNews, etc. that hold the same opinions, no matter how wrong they really are.

Like the OP said "As they refuse to take in information, their opinions becomes a fact" and with the support of other like-minded (albeit potentially uninformed) individuals, it becomes even easier for people to choose to not listen to anything that contradicts their ideas because they know how many others agree with what they are saying.

Sorry if this is worded a little confusingly, but I thought it might help better illustrate how the media and internet fit into the spread of this problem.

he didn't actually say that was his opinion on finnish people. he was saying that that particular group of people who JUST HAPPENED to be from Finland were ignorant. he was calling them ignorant because of their judgement of Greece when they hadn't even immersed themselves in the culture of Greece to allow themselves to grow a true opinion of the place.

and honestly, i wish i could subscribe to all of your threads OP, you're so intellectual.

i understood both and you're definitely coming off as an idiot right now, you have a cocky attitude that would be very difficult to change, try to see that you are just the type of person he is talking about. I acknowledge that any one of my opinions can and should be challenged. You have to understand that you are not always right before you can progress.

ignorant people make up the masses and pay the taxes

mike-0 you should read a book on ancient rhetoric,

☃ⓙⓐⓜⓔⓢ☿

^Is this ancinet rhetoric? I haven't selppt all night, my English understanding is bit bad right now

no rhetoric isnt a language, its the manipulation of language, i bet lawyers learn about it. thats just my name and my horoscope lol, with a snowman of course

Stop posting in a thread and telling someone not to type a certain word, makes you look like a douche.

"The key in this rant, however, is that although ignorant, these people are often highly opinionated. As they refuse to take in new information, their opinion becomes a fact."

"How do you argue with a person in the wrong, who strongly believes in his own opinion as a fact, while you on the other hand possess the knowledge to set him straight but simply cannot break the barrier of ignorance. While these people could be left on their own, to continue their subfound ignoramusness silently by all themselves, they lately seem to have a knack of airing out their opinions well-enough to the other ignoramusses and somehow even make their to parliament."

"This phenomenon has quite certainly been around since the dawn of time, but with the rise of the Internet, these people are starting to gain momemtum en masse all around the world, sprouting their ignorance wherever they will."

Concerned or not, is it wrong to wonder and discuss?

During our last parliament elections in April, we saw a huge surge racism and discrimination towards immigrants. The True Finn party went the populist route, got most of their votes from many very ignorant people, who honestly believe that all of Finland's problems will be solved by kicking out immigrants and refugees. A lot of these people had never even voted before, as they had 'no interest' in politics, but now believed that they could further their racist agenda by getting other like-minded people into parliament.

This has led to a truckload of new parliament members having a go at compiling and passing bills, while many interviews, personal histories and recent work results show that many of these people are ignorant idiots, who refuse to learn or understand our political, cultural and economic systems and work solely based on opinions stated as facts.

Example from one of them on how to turn around the downward slump of Finnish economy:

"We need to get those n*gger people out of here, and we can't have that muslim stuff, singing 'Uli Uli Uli' from some tower in the morning." This person is proud of not knowing anything about anything except being a woodcutter, and only follows the popular vote of the racist Finnish undercurrent, which now represents roughly a fifth of the Finnish people.

These are situations in a democracy, where it's hard to not try and justify minimum educational requirements or harsh, psychological tests to make it harder for these kind of people to become Congress representatives in a modern nation.

Those people are pretty marginalized though right? Isn't it like the BNP in the UK? I always thought Finland was up there with Norway/Sweden/Iceland in terms of lack of idiots.

Nationalistic populists are rising like a storm all over Europe, Sweden had the same situation in their 2010 elections as we did this year. You could say marginalized in the sense that it's hard to find a loud and proud True Finn supporter anywhere in the capital area, making it all the more ironic as there really aren't many immigrant problems outside its sphere of influence.

I just spent a week traveling 60 miles through the Tetons. I honestly didn't have a single care about current events or the world in general. I laughed every night around the campfire, in good company, roasting spring beauties and watching the stars. I can truly say I was at peace.

So where is the line between peace and ignorance?

I think you're on the wrong track a bit. This is not about the capacity to have fun and enjoy life by clocking out for a while, be it in the outdoor activities of the wilderness with no worries or strolling stonefaced in a bustling metropolis. It's about willful ignorance in the sense of creating a sense of selfish and arrogant 'knowledge' by basing one's facts on one's opinions, often accrued through non-existent or false information.

And if you guys have some good synonyms for ignorance then go all out.

You think I am following the wrong track you laid down for me.

A simple preconceived notion is the difference between peace and ignorance.

Excellent post and thoughts, I guess I missed this due to that Stossel bullshit. I think most people in western society are overworked and still continuing the completely arbitrary and outdated Nine-to-Five system. Not to say that there aren't millions upon millions of people in the world working their ass to the bone nearly ever waking minute just to survive or make a living of some sorts, but that's not how it is around here and I think we need to be given the chance of less work. More free time would lead to more happiness, and in many cases, what do you know - spending more time pursuing knowledge.

i somewhat understand why some people can be so ignorant and still live normal lives....

imho there are 2 ways to deal with politics, you can either stay up to date about what's going on and have a strong well funded opinion about things happening

or you don't give a shit about politics at all and live a happy "ignorant" life, because even if you would care about it, you wouldn't be able to change it ....

however there's one thing i detest; "ignorant" people who have a strong opinion about things they don't know shit about and are almost impossible to talk them out of it, simply because their opinion isn't base upon facts ....

The way I see it is if people dont want to experience another culture or stay up to date and would rather live in their shallow world then so let them. Its their loss

Ignorance is a state of being uninformed, peace is a state of being without hostility. You can pick and choose what topic you want to be ignorant of, which can sometimes result in your own personal peace. Ignorance is not necessarily a bad thing, it is in fact beautiful in its simplicity, but preconceived notions based in ignorance will lead you down the path of stupidity.

I think you are blowing ignorance way out of proportion. It seems you have a problem with people who have preconceived notions.

preconceived notion - an opinion formed beforehand without adequate evidence.

"Being Ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn." - Ben motherfucking Franklin
