Tesla cars?

What do y’all think about Tesla cars? The new roadster has a range of 620 miles in one charge and does 0-60 in 1.9 second. Would you ever want one? Do you think Tesla is gonna “change the future”.

I own a model S and love it. Thought about getting the wife a model 3. Ill drive mine until it stops working. I want the solar shingles so I dont have to pay for any electricity at all.

They are seriously struggling with production though. I am in the auto manufacturing business (one of the big three in Michigan) and that is a killer. If we delay 100 units, very high up people start asking questions. If we had those delays, there would be A LOT of people getting fired.

Side note, I decline an engineering job with Tesla. Looks like I made the right decision with the struggles they are having.

Yeah I didn't realize how freaking fast their top models are, but they're too expensive for me. 1.9 seconds is wicked fast for the price though. I don't want a tesla yet since they can't be taken on long distances (e.g. 700 miles). Once they put solar panels on roofs to allow for charging on the go, this may become a reality.

Solar panels on the roofs wont help a pure electric car. They require too much energy. Karmas have a solar roof, but those are electric hybrids, so they can charge while running on gas.

You can go anywhere in the continetal US point to point now in a Tesla. There are Tesla quick charging stations all over the US and they are free. Its just a pain to plan your route utilizing them. I cant want for quick swap batteries so you pull in and swap it for fully charged battery, kind of like swapping a propane tank for your grill.

I have driven mine 500+ with a couple stops to charge. The charging concern for me, and the reason I still have a gas vehicle, is when I go on vacation or a trip and have to park in a lot or garage. There is no guarantee there will be a Tesla charger in that lot or garage.

If you don’t mind me asking, what do you possibly do for a living that you can afford a model S?

Im an electrical engineer and own a hand full of rental homes. But I have been using my money to grow itself with investing for many years.

That explains a lot. My dad always said to stay away from electrical engineering because its too hard. I have my first E&M course next semester so we will see how messed up it actually is.

College was difficult. My university EE program was year round (3 semesters) and was a 5 year program. So that is 15 semesters compared to the traditional 8 semesters for other 4 year degrees. It was also crazy intense and fast paced. But, the reward is that you will never have a problem getting a job. I get offers all the time and I dont have my resume out. That is offers, not interviews. I recently heard an owner say, he would take the first mediocre EE that he could find.

I am only in high school right now, but my top 3 college choices have a "discover" program that lets you hold off on declaring which type of engineering you want to do until your sophmore year. I think mechanical may be my best bet, but I just want to make sure that I enjoy it the most vs something like electricity that I know nothing about currently.

I knew nothing going in either. I literally blew up an outlet in high school because I shorted it using the wrong setting on a multimeter.

If you have problem solving skills and think on your feet you will do fine in any engineering field. You can learn the details.

I am already flying through ap calc bc, I took ab last year and got a 5 last year with no studying really. I am very very very lucky to have such good teachers at my high school. AP Physics C is a little bit of a struggle but this is the 4th teacher for the class in 3 years, so its naturally just hard.

elon musk is on the verge of suicide so please buy his cars and if you're proper wife material please date him

They're so far ahead of the rest of the industry. All Tesla models come with medical grade air filters, which filter 99.97% of all contaminents from the cabin, so theoretically you could drive through mustard gas and emerge unscathed.

On another note, we need more progressive thinkers with big visions like Elon Musk. Whether his Lithium-Ion battery proposal for Australia will happen is for time to tell, but meanwhile we must keep moving forward and supporting the ideas of genius inventors.

They are coming out with roof shingles that are solar panels, it's crazy. I will probably hold off on Tesla until they can drive themselves, built in DD for the win.

I really don't believe the performance numbers until there has been third party testing. Also I would like to see what it can run around the Nurburgring because running low 7 minutes around the ring is far more impressive than building a car that can go fast in a straight line.

I feel like that is terrible advice. Id imagine electrical engineers are more in demand than mechanical.

My first year of college I go in undeclared and just work on projects that use all versions of engineering. I would not be surprised if I switch majors at all

Being an EE, Id say EEs are way more in demand, but both will not have an issue finding a job. Engineers are a limited market and if you have any interviewing skills, you have your pick of jobs.

I think Tesla cars in general are super dope. However if I was to spend $200k on a "fast car", I wouldn't get a roadster. I love the sound of turbo whistles, supercharger whine's and loud exhausts too much to give it all up for a 1.9 second 0-60 so I would probably opt for some European made V10 instead

Their range in cold conditions decreases drastically though

This is one of the biggest problems. The range dies hard in anything relatively cold. Once they figure this out I would absolutely love to have one. Either way I'm not gunna have money for a car for probably 5 to 10 years anyways.

You can preheat them, but that takes battery power to heat them. So, unless you preheat with it plugged in, you lose about the same amount as if you dont preheat it. But, it does cost more energy in cold weather either preheating or charging it more.

i predict that they will come out with a model for an insulated garage so its basically another room in your house with a garage door that seals

This is freaking awesome. You're a beast dude

Have you looked at the new 2018 SPEED WC FIS GS (R21WC) - 185? They are a really fast ski, hold up well on ice and can go through any ruts on the course. I usually use a ch4 hydrocarbon wax which really helps me glide along on the rails. Best for a 28 meter radius course, but also works on the pipe. I center mounted them with some look race bindings on 16 dins, for maximum control.

Whats the range like on those? Handle well off the beaten path? 0-60 time?
