sup ns.

im going to tahoe for the first time this weekend. the trip was planned long before the dumps, so i guess i just got lucky.

any advice you guys can share? as in dos and donts. were probably gonna ski squaw and were sleeping in truckee.

any input is appreciated.

pfft you don't need advice you're set bro. they have tons of snow, and you already plan to go to the correct mtns (palisades tahoe and whatever they call alpine meadows now; same ticket; dope mtn with fewer people usually and different layout than palisades but some seriously seriously sick zones)

have fun! you're gonna have a ball

arrive early. Get a bagel sandwich and a cookie from Wildflower. Get a beer and a slice from the Chamy at the end of the day.

This guy know what's up. Wildflour is a hidden gem and super close to the lifts.

That place has pretty good food in Truckee, it's chill, has (relatively) reasonable prices, and solid portions.

Cheers guys.

anything I shouldn’t do to piss off locals?

last time I was in California (mammoth) my rental car got keyed up in the parking lot probably cause I parked too close to a camper van. I’m used to skiing in Quebec where if a car fits somewhere, it’s fair game.

Lots have been filling up by 10am on the weekend. Best to leave earlier than you think. HWY89 from truckee to squaw has been a nightmare with gridlock traffic by 830am.

yeah Id be leaving truckee at 745ish probs.

We leave reno at 7-715 on weekends without pow and usually hit the lot at 830ish.

Snow will be cut up by this weekend. but its looking like you might get lucky with them opening hikes. If you're at palisades keep your ears open for if they're opening granite chief peak (peak to the right of granite chief chair.) or mainline pocket... you can also find freshies way out skiers left under GCP a few days after storms. Keep an ear out at Alpine if they open the ridge (runs the whole lookers right side above wolverine bowl over to the buttress.) Really easy walk on the ridge off of summit. Also keep an eye out for if they open up sun bowl on the backside of alpine. Just a quick jaunt straight up and over after unloading summit chair.

Have fun! Ill be in the backcountry this weekend, otherwise id show you around.

if you have have an epic pass or don't mind paying for a ticket, kirkwood has a ridiculous amount of snow and is staying cold for the next couple of days. it is a long drive from truckee but no one is there cause the highway west is closed, so it is just the locals at the moment.

Thank you so much, very helpful. So I’m gonna ski palisades in resort on Sunday.

I got a guide book of Tahoe area and haven’t really looked into it too much yet. I hope to do some chill touring on Saturday (below tree line stuff). My sister is gonna be on alpine trekkers and full alpine boots without a walk mode just so she can see if she likes it and is willing to invest in a proper kit.

all of this x100

OP, the hike-to zones at palisades and alpine are the real jewels, granite chief peak being my favorite i would guess. here are a couple of pics down the ridgeline at alpine, you can basically just choose a direction and how far you want to hike/traverse out to find fresh snow and fewer people

and then this link is just helpful cause it shows a lot of the sick zones at both mtns from the air. if you need help locating on a trail map where one is just let me know

Just a heads up. It looks like they might be opening silverado Saturday. If true Id highly recommend being there for first tram to ski some of the best inbounds terrain in the world. Ill be on first tram if they don't open silvy on Friday.

thanks dude. i think the older james niehues map is good enough for me to figure out where these spots are. the new layout is nice but this one just seems more realistic.

Main line pocket opened yesterday. It was going off

Boreal is usually an easy place to find comps from somebody. Even for a case of beer or something. Worth checking out if you're staying over that way.

I'd recommend a drive around the lake at some point. It's gorgeous, especially the Emerald bay side.

As mentioned traffic will be a big issue, but if you leave early you'll be alright. I skip Pallisades because of where I lived generally till spring. Def check out Alpine as mentioned.

If we're throwing out food options, I dig full belly deli in Truckee.

Is anything else on the Ikon pass in Tahoe? I had an epic every year working at Northstar and had a Diamond Peak and Boreal pass, But I've never had Ikon down there. Def a lot of mountains, hard to check out too much in a short time, but it's a big draw of Tahoe imo. If you have enough time, or come back for longer, always cool to check out another spot even if you have to buy a comp off somebody for cheap. Boreal does $25 fridays too once a month but I can't remember which week it is.

Have fun man, Tahoe is fun. More people and stuff always, but it's a great spot.

Just missed it. $25 Friday was last week and it was a riot. Dumped the whole time too. Next one is Feb 10

Figures. Def still a more accessible ski area even these days than some of the other places.

Honestly I'd skip the chamy and either go to slot bar or skip all that entirely in favor of a couple cans from Alice's

Traffic on weekends can be rough. MLK weekend, incline village to palisades usually takes 30 mins flat. It took me a little over 2 hours. I left at 8:30am. Lifts open at 9am.

Get to the mountain early.

this exactly.

I love tahoe with a passion but the crowds can be out of control on weekends. Smaller local resorts are always chill like boreal, diamond peak, sierra, homewood but if you are going to squaw, northstar, or heavenly (do not fucking go to heavenly), then you better be ready to wake up early before parking lots and lift lines get gnar

Cham if the sun is out to grab a beer and a snack is a must for a first timer though. A couple drinks at Slot bar afterwards is a good call. CoffeeBar does a nice espresso and coffee drinks at the other end of the village if that's in order as well.

Solitude never gets lines and is fun asf to get some hobby hot laps in. There’s a nice little cliff by the skiers right at the bottom near the lift that always goes.

If Silverado's running I recommend spending most of your day exploring the place. There’s some pristine hidden lines in there out by the hanging gardens and towards the ridge past the tram.

Other than that the entire mountain is your playground, explore and go off the beaten path, that’s were the fun is.

mmm idk how many are you bringing? you're going to be somewhere with insanely dope inbounds terrain, and tons of snow but mostly cut up of course. so whatever you like for that kind of riding

but you should def bring the CRJs, palisades is their home, you might even get a comment or two on em, hell you might bump into a couple of CR's buddies!

While I was working in the squaw tune shop I worked on one of CR's actual skis. Few of his are still in use by his family

Driving up to truckee later tonight. If you wanna lap palisades this weekend just shoot me a DM! Also, my roommate is the DJ tomorrow night at RMU. Should be a good time. Hope you enjoy your first time in Tahoe!

I miss that place so godamn much, this should be a priority to visit for op

One more to add. Get a Burrito from Golden Rotisserie in Truckee. So damn good, cheap, and huge.

Oh shit Silverado. Wow op you might have timed it perfectly

get there early, even from Truckee traffic is fucked. I'd try to be pulling into the lot at 8 to beat traffic.

Ask before petting the dogs in the village at Palisades, unless the dog is off leash cruising around and looks friendly then it's fair game.

Woah, you guys weren’t kidding with the traffic. We left truckee 7 sharp and still got stuck on 80 before even going down 89. we gave up waiting and toured up and around donner ridge for the morning.

also Silverado had sick terrain, but the lift line on Saturday was insane. Tried to get there first thing but we were too late. Skied down the canyon instead of waiting like 2 hours. After we came back in the pm and it was mostly cut up already.

didn’t get to granite chief on Saturday and sunday pm it was closed cause of winds.

Overall good trip.

ah im sorry to hear that man. wish you'd gone to alpine meadows to explore the ridges. aint no crowds in estelle bowl any time ive ever been there!

Did you eat or drink anything remarkable?

I mean by my Canadian standards the burritos at como in truckee were pretty darn good. like all we really have here to compare with is chipotle.

wild flour was a good call for a quick breakfast at the hill.

I think the biggest disappointment for me was no one was cooking in the kt22 lift line before opening, or giving out red bulls or skiing the palisades naked, or farting in the tram/claiming it. Def didn’t feel the gnar in squallywood. :(

I'm lucky I guess, out on the west coast there are a few quality mexican food spots, maybe not quite up to my old home in the Bay Area buy quality nonetheless.

I think most of the crazy hijinx squallywood shit died in the 90s, at least this early in the season. Come back at the end of May perhaps? A lot less traffic and a lot more parking lot grills and beer guzzling.

I may try to get there to ski July 4th this year. If they get a couple more storms through the spring the snowpack should make it.

Gonna be in Tahoe this week. If there is anyone that knows palisades well and is willing to show me around some of the challenging on and off piste terrain I would throw you some cash. Going to be there on the 25th and morning of 27th. Let me know or if you have any suggestions of areas to ski / inbound hiking.

I’m going to based at northstar, so will probably ski there one or two days but I have the ikon and always have wanted to ski at palisades so figured I would try to get over there for some more challenging terrain. I’ve heard kirkwood has epic terrain but is a little far for me.
