Switch Skiing No Longer allowed at Alta

Today I was skiing fakie at alta (in control, making good right and left parallel turns on an uncrowded slope,) and was stopped at the lift by a patroller.

He said to me, "hey why don't you learn how to ski forward before you ski backwards; our guests don't like it when people are zooming by them fakie."

I kindly suggested that I was in control looking where I was going on an uncrowded slope when he interrupted me with a little, "you know what, its been a problem in the past and we just aren't tolerating it this year." He continued to tell me that "you sure aren't making yourself look coool."

So there you have it! No more fakie alta skiing...they just won't tolerate it. So I got that goin for me, which is nice...
 
alta is gay. i went there and snowbird last year, snowbird was so much better. everyone at alta is stuck up.
 
alta is screwing themselves up the ass with their dick moves. as i already said, roped off cliffs, no switch riding, no boarders, no parks...its going to be the biggest tourist gaper-hole in the world.
 
Thats bogus dude. He personally attacked you and said that you don't look cool, and then challenged your skiing abilities? Thats just not right. Time to move to Colorado.
 
yea dude, utah totally fucking sucks this year...its like nov. 17th and we have 15"s of snow???? WTF Joseph, call your missionaries. Oh well.

That sucks. Great mountain, just a shame they are lame like that. If I were you, I would complain. If they have a rule about not skiing backwards that is one thing, don't break the rule. But the patroller was an asshole to say that. All he needed to say was "we don't allow that here," to make an idiotic comment like "you should learn to ski forward first" is really pathetic. You should say something to the resort management about the guy. I know when I worked at squaw I would never have spoken to a guest that way. He should have at least been polite. I would not keep doing it though, they let you off once, next time they may pull your pass.

Having a rule like that in the first place is very gay.
 
hahaha oh man. alta is one of the fucking raddest place on earth, if you get in trouble there, youre getting in trouble for a legit reason man. you dont know how fucking AMAZING that place is untill you get in with some people who know their shit there and spend a day of the most amazing skiing youve ever experienced...ps....i just got back from skiing alta and IT WAS SICK !
 
Most resorts don't tolerate backwards skiing, because we are "out of control" I've been bitched at more than once...
 
there were a LOT of people up there that needed to learn to ski forwards first. if you got talked to by the patroller you mustve been doing at least SOMETHING wrong. alta is one of the most fucking laidback places out there man. did you see how much shit they had open today?
 
So, according to your logic, people should not be allowed to ski switch, under control, on a wide open run, because that is a "legit reason" for getting in trouble?

I guess you and the power tripping patroller have the right to your opinions, but I doubt anyone on this site is going to share it.

 
go ski at alta. im sure the guy was doing SOMETHING wrong. the patrollers dont give you shit for nothing there man.
 
I have skied Alta, it's killer.

And it does have a pretty laid back vibe in a lot of ways, although on the other hand, banning snowboards is about the farthest thing from "laid back" that you can get, I wonder if colored folk have separate cafeterias up there too.

And I'm sure most of the patrollers are good guys, but it sounds like this guy found one who wasn't, if we are going to take him at his word.
 
do those same colored people who eat in their special cafeterias sit in the middle of the slopes on their ass because they can't get down the mountain? They don't allow snowboarding because many snowboarders (as seen at every other mountain) just sit in the middle of the runs because they can't get down.
 
I rode all switch all over the place today and passed patrols and rode up to the lift lines switch and nobody said anything.

plus your just assuming the kid actually CAN ski switch in control....i think what hennie was getting at was the kid prooollllly wasn't in control or did something something wrong
 
Give me a fucking break.

Have you never seen a skier sit in the middle of a run? Or walk down carrying their skis because they got in over ther head? Or stand in a landing? Sideslip a chute? Etc, etc.

Skiers and snowboarders are equally as capable of doing stupid shit that aggravates other people.

well i know there are dick patrollers at every place, but maybe he saw you almost cut someone off or thought he did? or maybe in his opinion you werent in control, there HAD to be SOMETHING. you cant just outlaw skiing backwards. even flat tail skiiers go backwards sometimes.

I guess you're one of those fans of the no snowboard rule.

Hope you apply the same type of prejudice to yourself and stay out of parks, since without snowboarding we wouldn't have them.

And your absolutely correct that I assume the kid was telling the truth.

I have worked as a ski patrol, and some of the guys I worked with definitely enjoyed the power trip, it sounds like that's what this guy experienced.
 
the other day we had a meeting with the head of alta. and he actually even asked the employees why they thought snowboarding wasnt allowed at alta. i heard some pretty crazy attempts at finding the right explenation. anyting from what you guys said here, to tradition, even one guy claimed it was a "watershed" issue being the cause of it. he just laughed at it all and kept saying no. his reason was that its a straight forward business decision. alta is a business they can choose who they sell their services to, and they choose to only sell it to skiers. he even said that he thinks snowboarding is rad, its the same thing as skiing in ALL aspects....they just dont sell their services to them. even though i did see a guy on a pair of big foots in the line today, that was odd. bottomline is, you guys can all talk the shit you want on alta, noone who rides there today gives a flying fuck about what you say about it, because they all know that your pretty much just actin a fool.
 
Have you ever been to Alta, that has nothing to do with why it is a 'ski only' resort. They don't allow snowboarding because so much of the mountain requires traversing to access. Snowboarders would have a difficult time and likely cause back-ups on the many traverses.

So what about a real sketchy beginner skier who jams up a traverse? Do they pull his pass? Blacklist him? Are there traversing tests for everyone before they are allowed to purchase passes?

Anyways, Bob Dole up there is right, it's their business, so they do have the right to sell their services in any way they want. However just because they have that right, does not mean that it is an unbiased or fair decision, it just means that they can do it regardless of how fair it may or may not be.

Anyways, the original point was simply made to provide an example of Alta policy that was not exactly "laid back".

yea move to colorado, they allow snowboarding and skiing at every resort and you can ride switch all over the place if you want.

like every one is talking about alta is sucking out this year. from roping off all the cliffs to not skiing switch. damn dude im going to park city.
 
exactly, i really doubt alta is enforcing a absolutely no tolerance absolutely no switch rule. its probably just something this dickhole ski patrol spewed out of his asshole because he was probably having a bad day or some shit and saw some youth having fun going switch and had to make his day better by exerting his supreme power amongst him. really i wouldn't worry too much about alta completely outlawing switch riding folks.
 
no resorts really like or encourage switch skiing on groomers, and they all say something like you can't see where you're going turn around.

most to all of them wont actually do anything about it though
 
ya but what i think is rediculouse, is that we can ski better backwards then any other kid on the mountain including the ski patrol niggers that made the rule.............
 
just mob past him fakie while hes goin down the mountain. then when he cant catch you when hes skiin forward he'll have no room to talk.
