anyone got nice living location for skiing and surfing? Im looking to relocate to an area that has bigger mountains for skiing and closer to decent surf. Im currently living in eastern PA and got 20min drive for skiing (bear creek resort) and a 2hr drive for surfing in NJ. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Washington has some fun surf and great skiing, it's more balanced towards the skiing side of things but I've just started surfing around here and I know a bunch of people who love it.

I don't think there are many locations like that. California or oregon maybe? I personally would hate surfing california cause there's eleven million people in the water. Chile? There's waves and mountains there. I don't know the situation in AUS when it comes to skiing but obviously there's waves there.

Where do you surf in NJ?

Yeah i was thinking bend OR might be a good option for skiing but i think at least 3hr drive to a beach. I usually surf manasquan. What about you?

I used to live in the gold coast australia. I picked up surfing the whole time I was there on and off. Never got overly good at it but I did get a sweet shot of me standing on the beach holding my board.

Bradley. I do the inlet in the winter sometimes but I imagine it's a zoo in the summer. Never tried it mid summer actually. That, and I feel like parking is impossible there.

Your correct, it is a mad house in the summer. There was probably 30 to 40 people out in the line up sunday lol. im going to a less crowded area for the rest of the summer, maybe ill hit up bradley sometime

I think it's funny when guys roll out to the lineup in 3/2 full suits when mostly everyone out is trunking. Glad I can comfortably trunk it now

3/2 is a bit full on but I enjoy wearing my steamer on hot days because I can't be bothered putting sunscreen on.

Only problem is spontaneous combustion when I pee

maybe on the east coast it's less common, but the softies here in southern california always have fullsuits. a steamer is definitely accetpable, but a fullsuit? come on

i knew coming into this thread was gonna get me way to hyped up on surfing.

grew doing a tofino trip once a year with my family. my dad grew up in NZ so he got me onto it pretty early. last year i spent 3 months in aus and 2 weeks in bali. first time i really got to surf more then just like a weekend or a week once a year. fucking hooked now. Hopefully going to tofino in the next month or so. its all i have wanted to go do since skiing was over.

post this in a thread a while back, but ill share it again. i think its so cool they way they did it

favourite surf movies are riding giants and step into liquid because they were the only ones the movie store had.

I'm blind and missed the full suit part. How ridiculous

Monday was good, and forecast to be good, so there was a decent amount of people. But it was mostly good people so it wasn't an issue. Sometime last week I went and it was crowded, but mostly noobs so people were dropping in on you all over the place. I had people go in front of me that I dodged by taking a high line over them, cause noobs just drop straight and don't bottom turn. One guy that's good and is often there was borrowing a friends board. Some girl dropped in on him and put a huge fin gash in it. So it depends who's in the water.

I guess I have a low tolerance for cold, probably cause I'm skinny, but last summer I wore a suit pretty much every time. It was cold last summer though. It's already pretty warm now, and it's weird because winter was frigid. I tried my 1.5mm top and got away with that for a bit last week. But once I get cold I stop surfing well and start missing waves so I'd rather be in a 3/2 fullsuit. The wind gets me every time.

Haha, in Maine I usually wear a 3:2 even in the heat of the summer. the water doesnt get much above 60F. I was rocking a 4:3 and booties on Monday and it was definitely necessary. That or I'm just a huge wimp...

Maine is cold as shit though. I'm just always cold so I have no shame on wearing a full 3/2 when others aren't.

I went to South Carolina one summer. People there were saying the water was still a little cold and I'm like looooool it's bathtub status right now And people from Maine probably come to jersey and say that.

Yeah I surfed in RI and was blown away by how warm it was. Even the water at Martha's Vineyard is super warm compared to what we deal with in the gulf of maine

I'm thinking Alaska/Canada or Iceland. There's a few places in Norway that could work too

Favourite event the year baby is coming up. JBAY!!!

Anyways here are my first round picks for who will win.

Heat 1: Taj Burrow

Heat 2: Julian Wilson

Heat 3: Owen Wright

Heat 4: C.J Hobgood

Heat 5: Mick Fanning (calling best opening heat with reynolds and otten)

Heat 6: Adriano De Souza

Heat 7: Josh Kerr

Heat 8: Kelly Slater

Heat 9: Jordy Smith

Heat 10: Nat Young

Heat 11: Joel Parkinson

Heat 12: Gabriel Medina

Overall my picks on who will win Jbay, comes down to Fanning, Parko, Wilkonson, Medina or Jordy. Depends on how big the waves are. The bigger the waves the more chance either Fanning or Parko have to take it out. Along with Jordy. Smaller the waves, Medina, John John,Italio

If you mean the firewire potatoes then i've only heard good things about them. The baked potato looks fun.

That or the Lost Couch Potato, when i bought my first shortboard i was a kook and bought a used one for bigger waves and its hard to surf the smaller surf, 3-4ft with it, so this seems like a fun board

The puddle jumper looks cool too. Stubby small wave boards are fun in general.

I have a pretty good wetsuit tan going on. Easily visible line on my neck. Hands too.

Just did a pre breakfast surf for about two hours. Much fun very surf.

Also im on lbi. Saw what i think was an old black hatch civic with saga stickers among other things. Definitely a skier or snowboarder. Who is it?

A: This artificial wave in the uk somewhere is supposed to open august 1. They claim to have a 2 meter barreling wave, among other things. Link http://www.surfsnowdonia.co.uk/

B: The J-Bay contest is on sooooo early here on the east coast. Starts at like 2am or something. Hopefully the finals end up being when I'm not asleep. Or really, hopefully they get waves.

Haha I was heading to bed the other night and saw a tweet saying it was about to start. I ended up watching like 3-4 rounds before actually falling asleep

I caught like the last three early in the morning. Felt bad for jordy smith. He kinda just never got a chance.

Parko afterbangs his last turn pretty hard at 57 seconds.

Also I had one of the coolest sessions ever today. First of all, I get there early and there's five guys, all out of the water. They said they think they saw a shark and were waiting for him to gfto. Secondly, it rained the entire time. I knew there'd be thunderstorms at some point. As I'm paddling for a really nice one, like right about to pop up, there's a pretty big flash of lightening and then a lot of thunder right away, so it was close. I went as fast as I could on that wave and went to my car. As I was walking there was a shit ton of thunder like right above me.

Great waves though. I actually got to do a bottom turn backside top turn hack sort of thing combo three times in a row on several waves. That never happens. I actually felt good. Great session, just not worth getting vaporized by lightening over.

Holy shit dream heat.

Fanning v Slater V Medina.

But hopefully the waves are BIG! So fanning can rip his edge in the water the whole wave. Serioiusly fuck this ariials bullshit. You're one probably the best power surfing wave in the world and you're awarding an air reverse higher than amaaing rail to rail power surfing? Fucking bullshit. Save airials to please the shitty little crowd in Brasil and keep power surfing alive.

Ha shit I had no idea that was the draw. Hopefully waves show up so they can just surf

I don't mind aerials. But I was kinda disappointed to see Medina do the same air twice in a row. I was hoping he'd at least mix it up. Fanning killed it. In these highlights at like 26 seconds or so they do slow mo of him. His board is like 270 degrees the other way, almost pointing straight out over the lip. He's surfing better than ever, and he even did an air too. Didn't expect that from him.

From the forecast it looks like it's going to be around 5 foot an variable winds when Fanning, Medina and Slater verse each other. It's such bullshit to watch Jbay go into an aerial bullshit. I want to see rail to rail power surfing not a luck fest and huck fest. And Medina will be over scored as well, because BRAZILIAN STORM!!!!

Rant over

Best surfing spot in Block Island? Will be there Sunday Monday Tuesday. Then will be surfing either Ruggles, First, or Second beach in Newport till Friday

I might get into surfing at some point, looks pretty dope. Although kite surfing is fun af

Luckily woke up minutes before the supposed super heat. Kinda chunky bad waves unfortunately.

That heat fucking sucked. Such boring waves and Medina still gets over scored for floaters? What the fuck.

Yeah that was a bas heat. Hopefully they actually get waves tomorrow or whenever theyre saying they will.

I think Sunday arvo the waves are meant to be 10 foot or whatever. Can't remember the exact numbers. It'll get better though. My money is still on Mick though. No one can beat that rail to rail surfing and once the waves get bigger and better and proper Jbay comes into its own Mick will be fire.

Look at the current surfers, Mick and Slater are the only surfers who I feel have an advantage on bigger Jbay. The rest are more airialists and have gotten this far because of the smaller waves.

But just watch Medina and De Souza get over scored. The WSL knows that Brazil is the next economy to flourish and there's big money to be made out of it in a few years. So they need surfing to be on the same level as soccer there. And what bettter way to do that than have Brazialians "dominiate" the sport.

2 hours before first light so I might go watch the local lineup in a bit. Thx jetlag

I haven't adjusted to the change in weather yet so I'm not gonna tackle the cold water

Check out the points on the southern side, the bluffs are always pretty crowded on the weekends because it's just a tourist attraction, rumor has it there are a couple of point breaks and reef/sandbar breaks, I'm sure you'll find something

Holy shit, Mick Fanning just got attacked by a shark I think. Looks like it bit his leash and got his board a tiny bit but he's fine.

Yeah Both Julian and Fanning will get 2nd place points and split the collective prize money.

Yeah, I linked it this morning when it came up from one person on my feed, then everyone and their mom flipped out and linked it.

...guess Jaws Hysteria is going to be on everyone's mind this summer.
