Surfing thread? Surfing thread.

I've been processing ski porn for the last month without being able to ski. My coping method? Surfing. Now that the waves are flat for the rest of the summer (or so it feels, FML) I've got nothing better to do than watch the Fiji Pro and excessive amounts of surf porn while I wait for the next hurricane. Or winter to come. Either works.

So let's talk surfing!

-What's in your quiver?

-Favorite surf video/segment/movie?

-Where do you surf?

-Wetsuit Gabber

-Favorite Person to watch surf?

-Favorite surf photographer or videographer?

-What are you about - XXL Waves, getting wicked barreled, busting out massive airs and turns, or hanging ten on your longboard?

Here's some x-rated surf content

Am I allowed to say Alana Blanchard?

But really though there is now where close to me to wave surf so I have never tried it, but I do plan on taking some windsurfing trips this summer to places where I think there is pretty good wave surfing to so if the wind isn't there I'm hoping to have some fun in the waves instead. What would be a good board size to get for relatively small waves and as a beginner only looking to use it a couple times a year?

I'm going to learn this summer, as my family is from Hawaii and I think that sort of makes it necessary. I have been wakesurfing since last year though and the flow is unreal. Stoked.

Also, anyone shape their own boards? Really want to give it a shot, I probably havent surfed enough yet to create an awesome custom board but I can always replicate a shape.

Check the thread in my sig. I shape/glass/surf a lot.

Excuse the instagram filters. All shaping/glass/other work done by me. That's 8' mini longboard that I'm really happy with in all aspects, performance and color. It's an epoxy resin swirl. The teal one is 5'4" and is my summer or small wave destroyer. The orange one is a my 5'5" good wave board. I'm like 5'5" so these boards are actually appropriate sizes. And I have a 6'4" single fin that's a jack of all trades as long as the takeoff isn't crazy steep. The thread in my sig has pictures from all those builds.

and a 10 ]

That feel when on mobile and it autocorrects glassed on to glasses on. You know you're a surfer when...

Can we take a ment to appreciate how barreled Owen Wright got at the Fiji contest? The last one in the final was insane.

I'm usually floundering around on an 8' 6" Anderson at Venice Beach or County Line. I'm a weekend warrior at best, but trying to be better at getting out in the mornings this summer. We'll see how it goes.

Got a few boards sitting back home from local shapers. a super flat, thick 5,3 fish from Stacey, a quiver of short boards ranging from 5 10 through to 6,1. But I was pretty lucky to grow up in Manly which has some amazing waves just in my back yard as well as tripping to the north coast and south coast.

As for favourite edits, well pretty much anything Clay Marzo does is mind blowing. And off course John Johns and again edit was amazing

As for WSL, coming into Jay bay and a much more technical leg of the tour with power surfing coming much more into play, probably see Felipe Toledo fall down the rankings. As for Jay bay itself, so excited to see Fanning throw down on his rails and just watch some real surfing for a little while. None of this one move wonder bullshit.

I just wanna see Jordy. He shreds everything. Proof

https://vimeo.com/120658450

and not gonna embed to avoid making a slow thread and embeds never work for me anyway. Shame he was hurt for this last one.

I'm curious as to what happens to Toledo. I still don't believe that he can't do a good turn, given the chance. The heats he surfed in this last one were a little slow. It happened to Kelly too. He barely got a chance. Maybe he picked a few bad waves, but the ocean didn't cooperate for the most part. I think if Toledo is given a long wall that J bay is supposed to produce then he'll be able to get stuff done. But maybe not. Who knows...

Fanning's frontside tail slide turn thing is still amazing and I could watch that all day. So crisp.

Also I was talking about auto correct in my last post and I myself was messed up by it. All this irony.

Fuck yeah dude! Those shapes are super rad, I love the unique nose you have going on.

I'm gonna attempt an embed. But I'm gonna assume that's not going to work

That's probably the first time it's worked for me so double embed is close enough. If anybody wants to watch me do the resin swirl on that peppermint flavor board up a few posts set to Belle and Sebastian you can. It's abbreviated, so it's a short video. *prays to embed gods*

Those videos really made me remember how much I love it. I miss it so much I've only been surfing for the past like 3 years and I know I'm pretty bad at it but when Im just standing up on a wave and I just feel like I could surf the wave for ever I miss that feeling so much. I live in upstate NY but over the summer I go to new jersey for 2 weeks and cape cod for 1 and I surf literally every day, I can't wait to go back out this summer. Last summer when I was 15 all my sibilings would work at my grandpas beach club everyday for fun and to make money and I would always be out on the beach next door surfing everyday and one day my aunt said something like why don't I work with them and I remember I said something really deep but can't remember it right now so I guess my rant is over

Toledo is a future title contender that's for sure, but right now he doesn't have the ability across all waves to contend for a title yet. He can hack but he can't power surf like Mick. Just watch him fall down the leader board as the tour goes into more difficult waves. The only event I'm predicting he'll do well in for the future events is Trestles.

Can't wait to see Toledo at trestles.

I just did a board repair. No matter how many times I mix resin I'm always afraid it's not gonna harden. Went to check and it's fine. Every time. It was a really small amount so I was worried.

Fuck yes! Going to be spending a week sailing around Newport and surfing and then the next week am going to Hood for a week to ski

This might be one of the most unreal things I have watched in a while, especially the way he turns, yes I know he's not on a surfboard but whatever its sick as fuck and I thought it deserved to be in here.

I don't think it works to embed from red bull anymore but gonna try anyways

Absolutely insane

I'm trying to get back into it. Been traveling inland to fests and shows all summers and working at mountains in the winter. Went in sydney a couple days but my paddling stamina was pretty rough. If I stop driving places non stop I want to paddle this inlet near me in the mornings to start getting my strength back. Had some shoulder surgeries after a ski accident and never really surfed or swam since.

I think I'm done skating for good unfortunately so would love to get back into surfing.

just went for the first time ever yesterday since I just moved to southern cali. rented a board and managed to get up after a few tries. probably gonna take some lessons then get a cheap foamie until i am a little better. any suggestions for a beginner/intermediate board for down the road?

Have it wide, lots of foam and a standard 3 fin set up. Don't get all tricky with toils, just got a nice pintail or roundpin tail. Don't get something too small as it's easier to turn a big board as apposed to trying to stand up and balance on a small board.

summer in southern california means breaking out the ol' wavestorm and getting some donuts, nothing more fun than getting thrashed on some shorebreak with your buddies

The first time I rode that board, last January or February, can't remember. All I know is it was cold.

It was finally warm enough to surf without a fullsuit today. I wore my 1.5mm top and of course the seam completely split on the side when I put it on. It's like two inches long. Doesn't seem to affect it much but it's gonna get bigger no doubt. Guess I've gotta buy a new one.

Shot some surfing this morning in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Made a little Instagram edit.

Hate me or love me I actually do mostly Stand Up Paddle surfing and racing, yes I know how to surf a normal/prone board and I am fully aware of the bad rep SUP surfers get.

No you cannot duck dive... it sucks

Got my ass handed to me today by some overhead Nor'Easter swells in Maine. Don't get out in the big stuff that often, but forced my way out to the lineup to scare myself and get used to it. Tomorrow AM is supposed to be shoulder high and clean, so stoked!

I missed today, which I heard was good, but I'm going tomorrow morning. Should be decent here in jersey too.

I don't surf, but this is one of my all time favorite edits of anything:

Get some!

I got some. Waist to chest high, some a little bigger and some somewhat forced and tiny but still made barrels. Super fun. Totally worn out now and I definitely shouldn't have had ice cream for lunch.

I've been looking for this thread!

I've always seen surfing as the ultimate thing to do since the first time I heard of it. I live in Sweden, where there is no surf culture at all. Windsurfing was pretty big in my parents generation, but most people don't really understand surfing on waves. That being said, it's growing rapidly here, and there are Swedish surf bums in most european surfing towns today.

I decided I wanted to surf after high school, so I went and spent a month in Biarritz, France. Took surflessons five days a week for four weeks, and felt like I learned enough to get going. Bought a board back in Sweden (stupid) and surfed once, about a year later, in the baltic sea (windswell, snowing, not awesome). The board, which I still have, is a 6'9", and it's pointy and kind of thin. Essentially a gun. Stupid. I bought it because it was cheap and available. Surfboards in northern Sweden is a bit like I imagine skis are in Florida or something. In the beginning of June I was in Portugal and spent a week at Lapoint surfcamp. Part of the surfcourse there was that one of the instructors (who was way too good to be an instructor) took us to a local board factory and explained everything about surfboards. Lucky my board was cheap.

Last week I was in Hoddevik, Norway, visiting my girlfriend, and I got to try some actual longboarding. Definitely my thing. Holy shit it was amazing.

Now I can't stop thinking about surfing, and even though I live on an island on the west coast, the closest surfbreak is at least 8 hours away. I can't go until like in a month.

Also, wetsuit gabber. I have a Rip Curl Dawnpatrol 6/5 with hood. It rules.

can't say too much for surfing, but would highly recommend hyperflex wetsuits. Fairly cheap and work super well. I'm in boston and use a 4-3 for kiteboarding and haven't had an uncomfortable day yet.

Anyone get out surfing in Boston at all? What beaches? I'm thinking Nahant could be pretty good

I'm from the South of Boston. Want waves near there? Gotta drive a bit. Try heading to Hampton in NH, South Shore area in mass, and RI if you're up for it. North Shore also breaks occasionally, never surfed there though its kind of no-mans land. All have varying consistencies, just check some reports and wait for swell before you make the drive. Praying for surf is your best bet around here haha

Sick man! Had some chest high action here nearly all day with some head high sets. Wind was great in the morning but got kinda choppy in the afternoon. Got three sessions in at three different locations including a sick reef point break. Such a fun day.

5'6 Lost über plank (fat fish)

5'11 RMS squeak (basic thruster)

The normal thruster is so fun and is a knife compared to the other thing - I've taken it in some double overhead and it went well. I just had to advance to third level poo man to remain stable....

looking through some of the pictures from that huge swell that just hit Australia. Insane stuff. Apparently someone rode the biggest wave ever ridden in Australia. Broke his leg when he bailed.

I saw that. Said his femur broke as soon as the wave broke on top of him.

Just repaired my 1.5mm top with dental floss and neoprene cement. Hopefully that works.

Maybe there will be waves for Fourth of July weekend. Last year there was that hurricane which was insane. Some little kid's leash plug pulled out I his board and I rescued him, then brought him back to shore. Currents were crazy.

anyone got nice living location for skiing and surfing? Im looking to relocate to an area that has bigger mountains for skiing and closer to decent surf. Im currently living in eastern PA and got 20min drive for skiing (bear creek resort) and a 2hr drive for surfing in NJ. Any suggestions are appreciated.
