I like how you absolutely shat on this kid for a couple of paragraphs and then threw out the obligatory back handed compliment to seem like less of a dick.
First of all, though it wasn't in his edit, that double flat is a completely original trick. I've never seen anyone else do it. Fair or not, Berman saw this kid throw that trick, and he would be stupid (as a filmmaker) to not take it into consideration. Previous winners have only gotten on average a handful of shots on spring park setups...with that in mind, this kid is a perfect choice. I know I'd rather see a heli shot of that trick, than of another dub cork, sw dub rodeo, or kang flip.
Also, I think he was arguably a cut above the majority of the front runners in terms of pure jumping overall. He grabs the shit out of everything, and FOREVER. I definitely think there were better "all-round" entries that showed a wider array of skills...(example - Tim's urban assault), but frankly I think the talent gap was so slim between the best 5 that any of them would be justifiable.
Wannabe? That's just bullshit. Superunknown is practically a wannabe contest. As far as the g-suit thing, I think I read that Henrik actually gave him his jacket. He probably worships Henrik as a fellow swede who blew up, can't blame him for wanting to rep. I just don't understand why you're being so harsh.
For better or worse, the finalist's edits were all pretty similar in terms of the superficial stuff like clothing style, music selection, and vibe. Trust me, by the third or fourth vid featuring a crystal castles or weezy track AND a g-suit I was shaking my head in disbelief...but, I could still recognize the talent of the riders. The obvious exception would be Bullet. A lot of people are pushing for him to win based seemingly solely on the fact that he dresses like a Surface rider. I think he looks fine and I can appreciate his left of center steeze, and I'm definitely a bit sick of seeing kids sort of blindly follow the park dress code, but to me, nothing about his riding screamed originality or progression. He slayed, and his vid was a nice changeup, but I don't think the decision should be based on such a stupid thing as clothing style. If you (and others) don't wanna see "gangster" skiing (a term that is absolutely fucking stupid and largely inaccurate as most of the skiers who get that label are incredibly ungangster despite big clothes...whole other thread), don't buy a Level 1 flick. Download Hot Lunch or watch Nimbus stuff. Problem solved.
To close up this ridiculously long post, I think everyone was very good (my fav was Matt L. for the record) and this kid deserved as much as anyone. To rip him a part is bullshit.
