so fucked up. This girl was only 19 and she was one of those people with so much potential. Then this guy walks with 60 fucking years for doing some of the most fucked up shit I've ever heard of someone doing. He'll be out at 70 with good behavior. thoughts?

I think for his actions he deserves 70 years in prison followed by lethal injection (if he hasn't died of natural causes)

he fucking strangled her then fucked her corpse then beheaded her then burned the whole place down. how does this go by with 60 fucking years in prison. sure it's a lifetime but he'll still walk free one day which is so fucked up to me!

It must be really horrible being the defense attorney in cases like these. Trying to get someone who's done something like this get off as lightly as possible...

it doesn't in that article. this happened years ago you had to follow the papers to know the full details. they summarize now for the sake of decency because what he did was so fucked up. but when it first came out they had the whole account of his actions and it was FUCKED UP.

that's very possibly the most horrible crime i've ever read about...
Poor girl, jesus effing christ....nobody should ever be put through something so terrible. May she rest in peace and may he rot in prison and burn in hell. I'm not even religious but I hope something awful awaits this guy

There are some sick fucking people in this world.

I can never understand what is going through ones head when committing a crime like this.

thats a pretty ignorant statement to make. Just because someone doesn't follow the regular path of "success" (graduate highschool, go to 4-8years of college, attain a career, work towards your pickett fence etc etc) does not mean in ANY sense that they do not have incredible potential. A single life alone contains so much potential, you don't know what she could have done had she not been murdered, you don't know what she was doing when she was murdered. A high school diploma is a piece of paper, it does not declare a person as a waste of space because they do not have one, and it certainly does not take away from there potential as a human being simply because they drop out of high school. In the greater scheme of things High school is relatively unimportant. I have a feeling you have yet to even graduate from high school and are still living in a jaded ignorant world created for you by guidance counselors and parents.

never been to church a day in my life yet I too hope he lives a tortured life in prison and dies a gruesome miserable death.

could you imagine living your life constantly thinking about how much you hate the guy who murdered your daughter? that would hardly be productive or healthy, I'm sure she struggled greatly with it. perhaps she is a religious woman or perhaps she is just forgiving. She obviously would need to do so to some extent eventually to be able to carry on a normal life, otherwise she would jsut torture herself for the rest of her days. It would be incredibly difficult but it shows that she has a great strength and probably loved her daughter very much and only wants to remember her for what she was and not what happened to her.

Jesus. Why are the people of this country such pussies about the death penalty? A life for a life, bottom line.

has anyone ever heard of the salcido murders? i know they are clearly not even close to being related but when people "forgive" for such heinous crimes...i don't get it. if someone took my daughter/son/any family members life, i could NEVER forgive them.

salcido sparknotes: dad went on killing spree. killed his boss, coworker, wife, mother in law, 2 sister in laws, and then slit the throats of his 3 daughters. one of the daughters survived in a field for 36 hours with her throat slashed and remembers everything that happened (she was 3 at the time) and when she talks about her father she said, "i forgave him."

"only" 60 years?

don't get me wrong. That is super fucked up. But 60 years is a long fucking time. 3/4 of your life. That's twice as long as you will get for first degree murder in Canada.

I'm not sure how I stand on the death penalty, but 60 years for a crime like this you might as well do it and save the taxpayers money.

This guy should be in a hospital though, not a prison.

I agree, yet disagree. Sometimes taking the life of someone who has no remorse for what they have done just isn't enough. Other times the manner in which a life has been taken is grounds for even greater punishment then death. I think they should torture him slowly for the rest of his life, keeping him alive till the very end, when then take his life in a most painful manner.

In this case he seems to know what he has done wrong, and even admitted that he didn't want to plea insanity but it was his lawyers who did. He should suffer for a long time before being put to death. Maine has no death penalty however, so the least they should do is give him a life sentence. I don't really the last line of the article though:

"Gurnery was not eligible for a life sentence because his crime did not meet requirements spelled out by the court."

what court decides that beheading someone after raping their corspe then burning the apartment is not worth a life sentence at the very least? I don't know.

I get that 60 years is a longtime, but the average life span is what now? 85 or something? how can you say "okay you did these horrid things and took this girls life, you deserve 3/4 of your life in prison but after that..if your good.. you can rejoin society for your last days a free man"? doesn't really make any sense to me whatsoever.

Do you think people are born with these impulses?

The guy was probaly abused/raped etc. as a child and has serious mental problems because of it. Yes, he did a bad thing, but he is a product of his environment. His parents/caregivers are probably more to blame.

it's definitely intense to think about, but imagine it happened to you. would you want to spend the rest of your life hating this man for what he has done? at some point your going to have to move on and for most people moving on requires at least SOME level of forgiveness.

If they don't eventually forgive then they will spend their lives tormented by the events and probably end up either dead themselves or mentally incapable of being a normal citizen again. People have to mourn their loss and carry on, its part of life and death. It is unfortunate when the terms of that loss are as fucked up as this, but it's the way it is.

And I'm sure in their deepest realms of thought, they don't TRULY forgive the murderers. They forgive them on a level that allows them to continue with their lives, but I'm sure they still hold somewhere inside of them a great hatred for the murderers.

raping her corpse and then beheading her? thats kind of horrible. Sure she was already dead, so she wasn't aware of it in any way, but thats still pretty horrible. Would you be cool with somebody raping and beheading YOUR body after you die? I sure wouldn't be down for that.

K that is some fucked up shit but "only" 60 years? The life expectancy is like 76 years old for males, if he was over 20 there is a good chance he doesn't even make it out of prison alive. Even when he does he is going to be most likely alone, old, and no way of finding a job. Pretty much the same as life in prison imo.

It's only horrible to others, not me. Hell, I might put my body up for necrpohlie desecration to make at least someone when I die.

I think the environment is fully to blame, but that still does not excuse someone for paying for what they have done. You can't punish someone less for doing something wrong just because something wrong was done to them. And they considered his mental issues in the trial and found him guilty when he he played the insanity card. They also had reason to believe that some of the psychologists hired by his defense attorney may have been paid extra for a certain diagnosis. The state appointed psychologists found him guilty of being completely lucid and right minded during the events, and he himself admitted that the insanity plea was his lawyers choice, and that he did not think he belonged in a hospital or sanitarium.

You sure wouldn't be down for that? Mate you'd be dead, you wouldn't be able to be up or down for it. Caring what happens to your body after you're dead is the stupidest shit ever imo, I know it seems horrible, but just think about it for a second and it makes sense.

obviously his life will not be a good one and 60 years puts him out very close to death. He wont need a job he is loaded from accident settlements. Just the fact that someone capable of this will walk free someday is what bothers me though. He will be outside of prison walls, able to do whatever he pleases for the end of his life (if he makes it out of prison). Just the possibility of that happening seems kind of fucked up when compared with the shit he did.

most likely, but there is now still the possibility that he wont. He was in his 20's, and a 60 year sentence with good time served factored in (they say it could take 10 years off his sentence) puts him at 70 when he is out on parole so 74ish when he is fully free to do as he pleases.

sure thats MOST of his life. but what he did deserves sentencing for his ENTIRE life with no chance at even the slightest bit of freedom.

oh yeah?! well i say fuck that and lets do eye for an eye! we should stangle him to death, blow a load in his dead face, cut his head off then burn off the remains!! who's with me??

Agreed. This guy deserves to die. Instead we're going to pay to keep him alive, albeit in prison, for most of his life. I hope that in the very least, his time there will be miserable. Who knows, maybe another inmate will kill him.

Not sure how it works in the States, but will he actually walk after the 60 years? I can see them keeping him in as a dangerous offender if they have something like that.

And not to take his side because he does deserve to never see the sun as a free man again, but what would taking his life in a most painful manner accomplish? It would just show that justice is no different, show how barbaric the "sane" man still is. Touchy topic nevertheless.

I remember when this happened and being completely baffled that someone could actually do something like that. My sister used to go the bagel shop she worked at too.

The guy had/has a lot of things wrong with him. It's really not THAT unlikely that he will have a couple free years after his 60 year sentence. Granted he'll be in his 80's but after doing something like this he should never have a free second in his life.
