Stevens pass avalanche - 3 dead, Salomon Freeski crew missing

STEVENS PASS, Wash. – Three people are confirmed dead in an avalanche at Stevens Pass.

Others who were reported missing have been accounted for.

The avalanche occurred at Tunnel Creek Canyon Road just outside of Skykomish.

It's not known what set off the the slide.

SR 2 is not affected, the State Patrol says.

The Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center on Sunday issued a warning for high avalanche danger for areas above 5,000 feet and considerable danger below 5,000 feet. The elevation at the site of the avalanche wasn't immediately clear.

So your friend was skiing with the Salomon Freeski crew but got out or what? Whats the story and where did they go and who are missing?

Sounds bad..

RIP. I was gonna be up there today, but I couldn't make it. damn. Thoughts and condolences to all the families.

From what I can tell with these news reports, it is ONE and only ONE avy. It occurred about 10mi maybe from the actual ski resort. Not in the sidecountry at all. Means those involved were touring. With that many people in one group, it seems very plausible that it was in fact the Salomon crew.

supposedly people from powder magazine were on hand with the rescue and SBC skier are reporting Jim Jacks has died (not sure if its related though)

I'm at a loss. This sucks so bad. Skiing this year has me puckered, even day to day almost. My brother was out of bounds today, and my heart jumped into my throat when I saw this on the news. Thankful he's okay, and praying for the families and friends close to those lost today.

Be careful, all of you. ♥

i think this is the worst ski season i've ever experienced... in every single way. more bad news like this doesn't help. Rest easy.

Another border got pushed off a cliff by a smaller avalanche today at Alpental and passed away. Super sad day, it was super deep up there today and got fairly tracked by around 1 so a lot of people were hitting the slack country. From the sounds of it, this snowboarder didnt realize where he was.

More painful reminders that when we are venturing out of resort boundaries or even resort controlled slack country, we need to be aware of our surroundings and familiar with the terrain or with someone who is and know the avy forecast/conditions. That along with having all of the proper equipment can help keep us safer, but their is still significant risk. Be careful guys.

Thoughts are with the families of the victims tonight.

So devastating. I didn't know the other 2 that passed but was friends with Chris Rudolph. One of the nicest guys I've ever met and never once saw him without a smile on his face. One of my hero's for sure.
