Stept NO HELMET!?

Quality response Rogge. AS you stated there is a lot of unpredictability on the mountain and in the park which is a great reason to wear a helmet.

The issue that I have with helmets is that I think they provide you with a false sense of security. Even when you're wearing a helmet, you're still putting yourself at risk of serious injury/ death when you're stepping to big features in the street. I think it's better not to wear a helmet because it reinforces the idea that hitting your head is NOT an option. Obviously freak accidents occur, but honestly, if you don't feel comfortable hitting a feature without a helmet, then you probably shouldn't hit it at all.

I didn't imply you shouldn't bring a beacon, and I do wear an helmet myself, but don't call me out on my own protection. I will call out anyone who doesn't mind his own business, especially in a individualistic sport.

wtf are you talking about. A helmet isn't a magical sense of security. If you don't feel comfy hitting a feature without a helmet you're not going to feel comfortable with one.

And there is not one person ever whose never felt uncomfortable hitting at least one feature. It's how you progress.

I dig urban and al but its starting to become to much like skating' That extra inch or two doest help especially when your going 3 times as big and fast, just f'ckin stupid

Lets examine something else for a quick second...

Lots of kids play violent video games. The GTA franchise has you as a criminal that can beat old ladies to death with a baseball bat. This has you partaking in violent acts....

Yet with that argument most of the time people say that its up to the parents to make sure the kid isn't violent.

Gangster rap is similar. Your heroes are criminals, talking about dealing drugs, murdering, etc. Your idol is a violent criminal...

Yet its up to the parents to ensure proper education of their children to make smart decisions.

Eventually you become a sentient being and its up to you to decide not to become a gangster, or to beat up old ladies with a bat. Its up to you (in some states) to wear a helmet when you ride a motorcycle. Action heroes in movies always jump on the bike and chase with no helmet.

Hell, add to that the fact that they are in america. They (or their parents) pay for their own healthcare. There is no logical reason that you can make someone take care of themselves if they pay for their own care.

An adult has the right to make their own decisions to treat their own body how they wish.

The main difference between the video games and movies and song lyrics compared to skiing movies is that those are all fake or over-glorified to the point of being fake. A ski movie is a real as it gets, there's no faking that stuff.

As a father (I think?) you must get that there are some influences your kids pick up on much much easier than others. Having them blow some Soviets to pieces in Goldeneye is so so much different than swearing in front of them. They won't start shooting people, but they will easily start swearing.

The main difference being how real it is. In a sport where people actually die from not wearing a helmet you would think those who are most influential would try and set at least a bit of an example for the entire generation of skiers to come. These guys are really pushing the urban frontier, it is THE influence for probably 80% of everyone who goes and hits urban. Sacrificing safety for looks is not very ideal.

And considering the influence pro skiers have in absolutely every aspect of style on young skiers, you can bet your bottom there are very many young skiers hitting urban who will leave their helmet at home to more emulate the 'Stept look'.

Okay...just to sum this up;

To not wear a helmet when you're hitting streetrails into an 20ft drop wallride is risky, if the rider choose not to wear the helmet for whatever reason, thats up to him/her.

They just do it their own way, and i have huge respect for that!

Also when watching the Stept guys, i allways think to myself; "why the fuck is they not wearing a helmet??? That takes huuuge balls! and like many people has said before in this thread; it makes the shots even more nuts and banger!

STOP TELLING OTHERS HOW TO SKI!

I understand the safety aspect, and idk if this has been said yet, but it's very comparable to pornstars not wearing condoms on film...

they know it's the safe thing to do, but frankly the shot looks better without it...

Extreme sport.. extreme consequence. maybe you guys should hassle all the helmet companies into paying all these guys an extreme amount of money.. maybe then they will be an extremely good role model for all you.

Honestly I see a ton of kids wearing helmets and they dont get shit for it. Noone is starting threads saying helmets are dumb, which, in my opinion would be a stronger influence to kids against helmets than pros not wearing em. A kid that wears a helmet now, likes it and feels safe, is not going to ditch it because they saw the stept crew in a movie not wearing one and doing dangerous shit. point proven with how many of you are talking shit on em. So please stop all the role model arguments. If you guys want good role models, street skiers are not for you. Maybe start looking up to Russ and Bobby instead.

As for why people dont wear them, there are a couple reasons (not saying whether they are right or wrong to think). Skiers dont always grow up skiing with helmets on, putting one on when you are 20 is extremely uncomfortable and can throw you off mentally, since you are constantly thinking about it. Its the idea of free skiing, You have your own style, in that case you dont want to conform to the authority telling you to wear a helmet, instead you want to wear what you want. A lot of Skiers that grow up with a skating influence, for example, hate having police at skateparks give tickets, or having the ability to give tickets for not wearing a helmet, Therefore a rebellion against that sense of authority. and It's partially a being "legit" thing, a skier who is pro in the streets has enough confidence in his ability that a helmet seems like a crutch and in that case not legit.

Back in the day, the OG burton riders used to get paid more for film segs if they werent wearing a helmet

ever try to hit an urban feature that required your ultimate concentration to prevent crippling yourself?

yeah, didn't think so....

This whole thread, as Rogge pointed out, is as pathetic as people yelling in the streets for people to stop smoking cigs...

except that cigs actually affect people, while not wearing a helmet does not... except for fanboys who are too fucking pathetic to have their own lives so they need to occupy it with other peoples'.

then again, that's with enough faith that parents will actually be parents and teach their kids that helmets are safe.

judging off this site, that will not happen and those "parents" would rather try to sue NS and resorts that have extreme park jumps rather than take responsibility for being shitty parents.

Wow, do you really believe that yourself?

I don't believe in telling other people what to wear when skiing, but to try and claim that one can choose or in any way influence whether or not an accident will occur, is pretty misguided. These thoughts and ideas you talk about here are entirely a construct in your own head, and it is entirely impossible to predict when an accident will happen.

And you would know how?

After you see karls segments this year, you'll be eating your words. Karl speaks the truth, when im not wearing a helmet im comfortable hitting rails and doing tricks but as soon as I have it on i feel 10x more comfortable. I know my limits and any good skier knows their limits too.

The thing is, guys like stept, 4bi9, other urban riders know how to fall. They know how far they can go on a feature before they get to a point where something uncontrollable could happen. Someone who doesn't know as much could easily take something too far and get themselves into a bad situation. Guys like karl know how to bail/when to bail so they either avoid falling or fall in a controlled way. Yes, there are uncontrollable situations, but these guys are confident in their riding and they know theyre not gonna get to a point where they could crack their skull open.

That being said ALOT of big urban riders (will wesson, LJ, chedder, martini etc) wear helmets when they hit urban because they feel better doing it. Some guys do, some guys dont, thats how it is.

They're 2 k3wl 4 h3lm3t5!

tl;dr

No one mentioned Pekka Hyysalo? He got fucked up even when wearing a helmet!

Helmet=win.

Well yeah, each to their own. But after all it's just one bang and you are a vegetable. You aren't gonna be thinking how steezy you were when you bashed your head into concrete, and get brain injured or even worse. And the worst of all is, that a helmet might have saved you. Btw check out this guy, he bashed out he's head into landing and got tbi. He probably wouldn't be alive without hes helmet. http://www.pekkahyysalo.com/?page_id=2213

Sorry for bad grammar.

lets not get too specific

helmets are safe. some nigggas are tooo damn hyphy and dont give a fuck 90% of the time. when you hit a rail that someone has died on before is respectful to wear a ______ in tribute to them. no specifics. thsi sport can be deadly either way. cigarettes are not nearly as dangerous. smoke pussy in a sandstorm. thats really fucking dangerous

I fully understand why people would/wouldn't wear a helmet and won't judge people on their choice. But I think a reply from Stept explaining their choice would be rather interesting. Just curious seeing as everything they do is just insane

Because surprisingly, I actually do ski. while not nearly as good at urban as an Stept guy, I do still hit some features now and again.

Anyways, I don't wear a helmet when I hit urban. I don't wear a helmet when I ski, except in park where it's mandatory (and looking for a new one, if someone is selling a helmet). If it wasn't mandatory I wouldn't wear a helmet. I don't wear one when I bike either.

I totally understand why one doesn't wear a helmet but am choosing to argue against it since there aren't enough people doing that and this really is an important matter that, in discussion, requires both sides to be equally as supported.

And to add, I have also done 4 years of ski patrol and have seen a good share of head injuries that could have definitely been prevented had the person been wearing a helmet. Luckily nothing too serious, most of the serious ones the person was wearing a helmet anyways and who knows how they'd be had they not been wearing one.

And knowing your limits only goes so far. Accidents happen, that's why they're called 'accidents', and even if you're completely comfortable on a feature you can easily still fall. It doesn't matter how good you are at falling, head injuries still happen.

And why is everyone making it seem that these Step guys are fully comfortable hitting all the features they hit? I would call total BS if they said they've never been anxious or had a few butterflies in their stomach before hitting or had that "oh my god!" adrenaline rush after hitting a feature.

I'm also surprised nobody has posted this in response..

1000w

Watch any of their latest movies and they make it very clear that just about everything they hit they have the "if I fuck up im going to the hospital" feeling.

i agree with everything up to here. if its the same trick on the same feature with solid style, then its just as legit with or without a helmet. i would be super bummed if the ski industry went the route where doing something with a helmet is considered not legit, because that really would influence people's decision to wear a helmet or not. thats how its happened with skateboarding and i think its a damn shame people can't get recognition with a helmet.

people shouldn't feel coerced into wearing or not wearing a helmet, and saying someone isn't legit for wearing one is really juvenile. its basically the equivalent of "only cool kids smoke cigarettes." is wallisch and wesson's stuff not legit because they wear helmets? please man get real.

READ my post, i said not my opinion but what the case sometimes is, and I've never heard someone get called out for wearing a helmet, or actually saying it wasnt legit because he wore one.

This thread pops up all the time about helmets, "People who dont wear a helmet are stupid" "they should get a head injury and see how funny that is" "blah blah blah blah blah". You guys making freeskiing look like a bitch sport, not because you think wearing a helmet is good, but because you complain constantly about what other people do, how they act, how good of role model they are, and what they wear. Quit Bitchin. If you wear a helmet then good for fucking you, noones attacking YOU for it so stop feeling so threatened by skiers not wearing helmets...

Its all preference. I wear one because I would of been a lot more fucked if I didn't have one on when I got my concussion. Who gives a shit, though. People care about too much stupid shit in skiing nowadays.

sorry i actually said, whether it is a right or wrong way to think... But not saying that is my opinion, Could give less of a shit if people do or do not wear one.

Helmets are a must for me. I already have two concussions and one more would mean no sports and possible brain damage…no thanks

Helmets for me!

Wear a helmet = less chance of brain damange in a fall/fuckup

Dont wear a helmet = increased chance of brain damage in a fall/fuckup

Its that simple and the choice is up too you. But expect no sympathy from me if you suffer brain damage or die when not wearing a helmet. I respect stept's skiing ability and progression but not their personal choices. I wear a helmet every single damn time i snap into skis, jump on a longboard, or pedal a bike. Why? Because i have had enough falls where i knew it would of been that much worse without one.

Recently my friend ate shit on his longboard without a helmet. He has been in recovery mode for a month or so now and he KNOWS it would of only been a couple of days recovery or maybe none at all if he had one. He imediatly went out and bought a POC and wears it for all things speedy and risky, even pedaling down to the closest burrito stand. He recognised the risk and choose to take action to lessen it. And now my other friends who are pro at longboarding wear helmets more now. They see the risk and they are choosing to lessen it. If stept wants to live with the increased risk of not wearing a helmet they WILL suffer the consiquences. As my cowboy dad says about bull riding ,which is one of the riskiest most dangerous sports out there, "its not about IF you get hurt, its about WHEN you get hurt"

The choice is up to you friends. I only hope you can make the right one for you.
