Stept NO HELMET!?

Recently saw Mutiny and it was unreal. THEY. GO. BIG. And I didn't really think about it until afterwards. WHY THE HELL DON'T THEY WEAR HELMETS!? We all know the consequences for taking that big of a risk. What is the logic behind this? Is there any?

We all want to see you guys throw down, but no one wants to see another head injury.

Throw on a dome bucket. Please.

they are too cool for helmets. Im sure if they couldnt walk anymore or had to eat out of a tube they wouldn't think its too cool.

but it dont bother me, not my problem.

NO, skiing =/= skateboarding, when was the last time you heard of a skateboarder dying from injuries? Didn't think so....

Because it's a choice! I hate NS trying to be everyones mom. Yes, the shit they do is very high risk, but they don't have to wear a helmet just because others feel they should. I wear a helmet most days, but there is nothing like the feeling of corking out a large jump or sliding a massive handrail without a helmet. Yes, you can wear as many pads as you want and I won't judge you, but please don't judge me or anyone else if we're not wearing a helmet.

i agree, they apparently dont. Its 100% a cool factor and if they say otherwise they are lying.

and the other guy i dont see how doing a cork 7 or any trick FEELS better or different without a helmet, thats crazy talk.

Try it out sometime. The wind on the face, hair in the wind. Why don't we just not do tricks because they're dangerous? Why don't we just ski normally and avoid things such as rails that can cause us harm? It adds a little danger and fun to the sport not wearing a helmet. Just the feeling of being free and not confined to a bucket around your head. I don't get why people hate on people who don't where domes. Why the fuck does it actually matter...

i consider myself fairly neutral in the helmet debate (full disclosure, i usually wear one) but that is a really good point

I think mcleod was referring to street skating. If you look at skateboard magazines you wont find a picture of a street skater jumping a set of stairs with a helmet on. Vert is very different. Stept films entirely in the streets and its their choice to wear or not wear a helmet. Joey was the only one I noticed with a dome cap on. Most of the stuff they do is extremely calculated although very dangerous. I would encourage any amateur to wear a helmet while hitting urban but in the end its not only their head that is in jeopardy.

i guess you make a good point and its everyones own choice your right. I would never think of wearing a helmet when i skate but skiing (at that level at least) is no dam gnarly and dangerous its insane not to. Skating i get 5 ft of air, these guys are flying a hundred feet sometimes in the park let alone on the streets.

plus when skiing i like wearing a helmet....keeps my goggles on good, my head warm and dry and it doesnt annoy me like it does when skating.

but yes it shouldnt matter what other people want to do, we just dont wanna see these dudes get hurt is all

theres nothing rational about it, but if people wanna be stupid to boost their gnar/coolness or be like teh sooper cool sk8brdrs or "feel more free" then thats on them and nobody needs to care, its not your dome at risk. its fucking dumb, but they got a right to be dumb when they put out the best urban content in skiing.

i'm glad theres guys like wesson and wallisch so the no helmet thing doesn't get out of hand for the kids though.

Stept does next level rail skiing that we all love to watch. Do any of us really love watching these segments anymore simply because they don't have a helmet on and we can see their hair flow? Who gives a shit about that. I love how fast skiing is progressing and the risks these athletes are willing to take to push the sport to a new level. But why are skiers making these risks exponentially more risky but not wearing a helmet. Are we really that stupid that we can't learn from the past? We've lost skiers even when they are wearing a helmet. I don't want to see anymore skiers get hurt.

RIP SARAH

When claytons part ended with that huge ass walride i thought the same rhink if he had screwed that up hed be either dead or a vegtable

More steeze(intermsoflooksi.e.helmets)= more vegtable people

I think it is interesting that someone is bringing this up. The entire movie is allegedly about gnarly and costly it is to be an urban or freeride skier, but a lot of it is self-inflicted. All for the cool factor. It is sad when you think about the risk, but it is their choice. What IS disappointing is that if one of them cracks their head open on a rail and dies, thousands of people will memorialize the skier and anyone who suggests he should have worn a helmet will be ostracized.

Well yes and no.

If you're just not wearing one because you really don't want to, don't like how they feel, etc. hey good for you man. I don't agree with that but it's your head and your call.

If you're not wearing one because you want to look cool you're a fucking idiot. That's letting an imagined perception- one that isn't even real- dictate how much you look out for yourself. Again, it's your call but not wearing a helmet for someone else's enjoyment is lame af. "skateboarders don't wear them" lol... They don't fucking skateboard off mountains either!

I dunno I just think that's hilarious. In any case it's of no consequence to me so hey enjoy yourself and I hope everybody thinks you're like, the coolest guy ever if that's what you're going for.

Well put.

I'd like to see the dudes wearing helmets at least when they're out hitting urban. I really don't want to see any of them dying because they weren't.

last year a helmet saved my life, wear one.

I've said it and I'll say it again , stept does so much gnarly ass stuff , they'll end up with bad bad bad injuries or even worse.

Every year so far that I've been on NS a new Stept movie comes out, and a group of threads comes out concerned with the fact that they don't wear helmets. Honestly it's time to move on. It just stems from the fact that these guys obviously know what they're doing, know the consequences, and choose to not wear them.

Up and comers (younger kids) are going to watch these guys and want to do what they do. Wearing a helmet to protect their dome and set an example would be nice to see from big name skiers both in and out of the park.

when was the last time you saw any skateboarders hit anything nearly as big as skiers do?

im not against skiers not wearing helmets but forreal skiers hit unquestionably bigger shit on the reg

Im allways wearing a helmet when im trying to progress my game. I have taken a few hard falls to my head to not wear one when i do bigger stuff. When im just messing around however, i dont wear a helmet because im confident that i won't fall, and i rearley hit my head, but it happends from time to time like i mentioned over, so i'll never say never.

Safety first dudes and dudettes!

As for Stept i have huge respect for doing all that gnarly stuff without a helmet. Just look at the last shot at Cams 2012 compelition, that could have ended bad as fuck, but i guess he's confident, and iv'e seen him take heavy bails to his skull on staircases, so i guess he has a hard head lol.

But what will happen if one of them get a careerending injury for not wearing a helmet... Will suddenly the whole Stept crew start using helmets?

I hope we'll never find out. Just a thought...

Not that it's relevant because comparing skiers to skaters is a terrible comparison (what skiers do in urban settings is usually much larger than skaters except for a select few big rail/ledge skaters)...but Arto came DAMN close to making this statement false.

This thread comes out every year about this time, and it's always the same result, half the people say "it's their choice" and the other half say "they're fucking stupid"...the irony is, both halves are completely correct, is it stupid, yes, but it's also their choice. I'm 100% sure that every time anyone from Stept (or anyone skiing urban for that matter) preps for a rail they understand that they could get seriously injured hitting that feature, but they're willing to take that risk. Who knows what the reasoning is, but honestly, it's not our place to judge how others live their lives.
