Fair enough, and I do agree with you. I think the simple fact is a cost benefit analysis of the athlete. Someone like Shaun White reaches a ton of people, but probably costs millions per year, if not tens of millions. So you gotta sell a ton of snowboards to make that back.
Applying a mass budget to an entirely local team (sort of what Andy was suggesting) could have a really cool effect. It would be much more grass roots, but you could go so far with the same amount of money.
I don't actually know the answer to this, as you'd have to study a business situation to really know. I'd gander that they might be close, but that you can reach scale with a big name that you can't locally... Though I wouldn't be positive that is the case. There is a ton of power in large-scale local, that is why shops, employees and guys like ski instructors are so important.
