Sponsor Situation

In my town the local ski shop doesn't sponsor any skiers, only a bunch of snowboarders, and I think this is the reason why there are so many more boarders. There aren't any events for skiers, except for one snowboard oriented competition per season. If they sponsored the local guys it would make skiing way more hyped and more kids would get into park!

im well aware the power of personable brand representatives. ive worked summer camps on mt hood. camp sponsors get their people jobs at the camp to make friends with campers and push their brands.

but what i was referring to is someone along the lines of shaun white. I know hes a dbag and at the very end of the mega pro spectrum but how many times have you seen kids on tv at x games or dew tour say shaun white is their favorite snowboarder?

For the kids that are already sort of into the ski or snowboard scene the local hero or semi pro you get to meet is huge. but from my experience the more into the ski and snowboard life one gets the less often they buy new gear. where as you first few years when everything is new and exciting youve gotta have that fresh new gear every year and youre going to want to be like the best person out. i think applies pretty well to this situation, do you remember the nike commercials "be like mike"? he was one of the first to have a shoe with such popularity. people wanted to be like the best big name so his shoes sold.

from a purely business perspective:

Eric Pollard: because he creates a shit ton of high quality media, including ski top sheets, and is a super awesome creative skier

Tom Wallisch: duh. also potential Olympic medals and resulting mainstream media attention

Lindsey Vonn: big ski companies sell a lot more than Freeskiing specific skis. Lindsey Vonn is a household name who dominates ski racing.

Will Wesson: keeps it underground and urban slaya'

Phil casabon: he has such a great style

Tim mchesny: linked with 4bi9 and is a complete g

Is it fair for us to play along?

Tim McChesney - destroys urban and has the illest jump gameSteve Stepp - always entertaining on and off snow

Adam Delorme - the guy has style light years ahead of anyone else

alternates: Nicky Keefer - hes bringing a style to park skiing that is going to take over the world

LJ - the kid has the energy and imagination of a cracked out 12 year old with the athletic ability that rivals anyone else on snow.

Tim Durtschi - better back country jump skills than anyone out. best switch landings into pow.

What can we say, we like the team weve got.

clayton villa: insane

witt foster: dope style, I wish more footage of him in the park was around

jed anderson: nasty urban

henrik would be runner up to jed

Fair enough, and I do agree with you. I think the simple fact is a cost benefit analysis of the athlete. Someone like Shaun White reaches a ton of people, but probably costs millions per year, if not tens of millions. So you gotta sell a ton of snowboards to make that back.

Applying a mass budget to an entirely local team (sort of what Andy was suggesting) could have a really cool effect. It would be much more grass roots, but you could go so far with the same amount of money.

I don't actually know the answer to this, as you'd have to study a business situation to really know. I'd gander that they might be close, but that you can reach scale with a big name that you can't locally... Though I wouldn't be positive that is the case. There is a ton of power in large-scale local, that is why shops, employees and guys like ski instructors are so important.

best of both worlds. take regional heros and promote them to the level of mega pro. in skateboarding you need a pro model to be pro. in snow sports you just need something or someone promoting your name enough. who says you need to be doing mega pro stuff to get mega pro recognition? theres so many people out there doing ski type things worth being noted and promoted. lets find the ones we like and get them the attention.

Tim Durschi: Always have enjoyed his movie segment and overall he is an epic skierGus: Obvious reasons, he puts in the time and is committed...important from a sponsors standpoint

Tatum Monod: She rips it. The general trend seems to be migrating to more and more epic backcountry segments and I feel like she could headliner segments

Tom WallischFavourite guy to watch ski, he obviously slays everything.

Jossi Wells

Because he rides motorbikes and I like the sounds they make.

Malcolm from Shredsauce

Because I'm a big company and I do whatever the fuck I want.

^^this with an additive; depends on who you are trying to sponsor and for what reasons.

If you want your brand/label/cause to represent a huge presence and market dominance, go with the big names in every sense. These riders will bring xgames level notoriety, and get xgames paychecks. But people who are in it for a nighttime dish washing job to ski all day tend to see through it.

If you want perception of your brand/label/cause to be more relate-able to a niche that spends a lot of time doing what your promoting, expand your team by looking for riders that fit and promote your brand regardless of their out of industry recognition. You may not be able to pay them all well, but you will be able to help more riders while still helping you.

Clayton Vila- he pushes urban skiing so hard and shows how much he loves it.B Dog- the craziest style out there and doesn't have to compete to be on top of the game

Ahmet Dadali- rides all aspects and is crazy good at it.

on a side note im pretty stoked on what nordica has been up to this year, I like the direction there going with skiing.
