Sore toenails, ++karma

so today was my first day on the slopes, and by the end of the day my two big toes were killing me. my nails are properly cut, and the boots were fine last year. they still hurt now, and are kinda darkening in colour. it felt like when i leaned back/landed kinda backseat, my big toenails were being pushed head on/lifted up by the end of the boot.

anyone else get this? any remedies? ++k

Tighten your boots, i get that from my feet bashing against the tops/sides/front of my boots. Im pretty sure your feet are just moving around inside your boot and tightening your boot will solve it...hopefully

i also went up today and same thing happened. It happened really bad last year to me and my toe nail was black for like 8 months. But yeah what he said tightin boots more is best advice.

Last year i lost both my big toenails due to this problem. Go to a good ski shop and get them fit properly. It helped me a ton.

basically your boots are too big, unfortunatly buckling them down won't shrink the length of the boot, all it will do is cut of circulation, it might lock down your instep a bit or pull your feet back but depending on your boot, but it won't do much, your best option is to get some sort of footbed that will secure your foot a bit, and try not to land back seat. your other option is new boots.

sorry for the double post but try changing your sock. A sock can change the size of your boot by like a quarter of a size

I have had this problem for a years and years. Cutting my nails really short has been the best remedy. Most of the time they eventually the fall off about half way through the season. I know that is super gross but I have honestly tried everything. Currently I have Dalbello Il moro's with ID's liners and custom foot beds. Fit perfectly. I have come to the realization it is just the shape of my toes (i have really fat stubby big toes). Maybe you will have better luck. Let me know.

that happens to me too... and its cause you are sliding around in your boot, how old are your boots? getting a footbed may help... try thicker socks... if not i would get another pair of boots... and i know its your big toe but once you start moving around in your boot like that you can also get the "skier 6th toe" (yeah gross)... and punching out your boots help soooo much if that problem happens..

well my toes are fucked too. My boots are a bit too small and i dont want to punch them out to much and have them to big... so im in the process of packing them out and my toes hurt soooo much. I might have to do the stick a needle into your toe to realese the pressure.

what do you have for footbeds? If you have really high arches and they are not supported and the foot flattens out, the foot extends a bit more, thus your toes may be jamming into the front of the boot.

I just got brand new boots that are properly fitted this year and on my first day I discovered I get mad toe bang. My old boots didn't to this at all and they were the same length, but too big everywhere else and I skied with only the top buckle done up all year and didn't even get toe bang.

I'mma bring in my new boots to the fitter and get a couple more pressure points punched out and see what he does.

thanks for the tips guys, yeah i realized that i didnt get proper footbeds for these boots yet (i got them at the end of last season), and i think that would probably work best. i always used superfeet in the past and they seemed to work well, so i'll just pick up a pair of those.

superfeet ftw

i love them to death. they are so expensive (relatively), but work amazingly

i guarantee the problem will stop with them

its the beg. stage of toe bang...its a bitch try to stop it as soon as you can cause if it gets worse both toenails will fall off as gross as that is and it will hurt 10 times more once their off and hurts to ski for about 2 weeks...so try to find a solution to this problem

i got third degree burns on my feet, and the next winter got mad frostbite(12 hour day with boots 4 sizes too small on). my feet were so fucked up, i had both of my big toenails permanently removed. works like a charm

Same deal here, except my boots are probably a size too small. Came in for lunch and my big toe was sore. Took off the sock and the entire nail was deep purple, like the band. Kept skiing of course and the color returned, but apparently it's seperated from the toe now. its not attched anymore, like its on a hinge. There are pus discharges every hour or so and a lot of fluid under there. It hurts!

it happens to me when I wear thin socks, once that happened I started wearing thicker socks, alos try loosening you toe bindings a little bit.

yo dude, you need new boots or you need to put footbeds in your boots. Exact same thing happened to me last year except my toe nail actually fell off and was a bloody mess making me not be able to ski for 2 weeks because of such a stupid thing. I still have my boots but i curse them, im buying new ones over christmas, whenever i drop a cliff it feel like someone is hammerin my toes.

How can all of you confidently say that his boots are too big without even measuring his foot/boot? Yes, his boots can be too big...on the other hand they may be too small. Maybe dude is skiing backseat? In which case...stop skiing in the backseat. Otherwise a footbed would help. You could also use some padding on the instep to get those toes away from the front of the boot. If your boot is too small get a punch in the toe area.

so i bought some superfeet today, they should help. and no my boots are not too big, i got them properly sized. i'm not really new to the toebang scene either, my nail fell off last year as well. i cut my nails short and it felt way better today

etter today.

either way it sounds like u dont have proper fitting boots.
even if u get a footbed, it wont be working properly if the boot is the wrong size it will be a waist of cash.
id reccomend going to a shop with experienced boot fitters and either retrofitting the boot or getting a new boot all together.

footbeds do help a bit, at least they did in my case.
i'd also go with the thinnest socks possible, or go barefoot (sockless) like i normally do.

make sure you tighten your boots..... and get custom footbeds.......

u should be fine other then that........

not the case for everyone...
superfeet wouldnt do much for my foot...so i needed custom footbeds...
dont just say random shit (directed to everyone) unless u have at least a little bit of an idea of what you are talking about, cause otherwise this kid(or man, w.e) will just go out and possibly waist $$ on a 'footbed' (ala superfeet) when it is very possible the boot is to big for him, in which case a footbed is a waist of time
and cranking down the boot can just cut off circulation to the foot so that isnt such a great idea either.
go.
see.
a.
bootfitter.
period.
.

I used to have that problem...then I bought Dalbello Krypton Pro I.D's with a DFP insole..and it seems as if the problem has passed. I feel ya for sure though

had same problem, tightening boots worked for me, i knew they were too loose when my toes hit the ceiling of the boot

yeah i did that this weekend. i hit this mini jump on the side of the trail and hit a branch and landed backseat on ice and nearly ate shit. then my toes hurt

yah my friend is out for 2 weeks at least because of that. He hit it so hard in his boot that the doctor thought it was broken. the nail is infected and the toe is purple, its not pretty.

I lost both my big toe nails at the end of last year and i came back from this weekend with them throbbing and took off my socks to find em purple again. My boots fit perfectly last year but now they packed out quite a bit and are too big, same mighta happened for you. I just brought em back to christys sports where i bought em and they butterflyed the back of the liner for a snugger fit so i hope it works. As for the pain you should try this. Heat up the end of a paper clip and burn a small hole into your toe nail. I know it sounds sketch but trust me, it releases the pressure and helps alot with the pain, i didn't do it last year and did it for the first time yesterday and am very glad i did. Just make sure you do it over a paper towel or something because the blood tends to squirt out, you'll be surprised how much you get out.

Superfeet makes custom foot beds called korks. so super feet could work for you if you got the right model and had them properly molded...

I used a small pin / needle and it worked for me. It hurts a little, but the pain is instantly gone. Try having a few beers / shots before you do it or have a friend do it. Do this as soon as possible, if you don't, the blood dries up inside. As for your boots, either tighten them or get new boots. It works though, and the blood squirts out as soon as you commit to putting it through your nail. Good luck......oh and your nail will fall off in a few weeks.

i used to always have this problem too but i just got new footbeds with high arches and i clip my nails a little extra during the winter. Also when you put your boot on kick the heel into the ground to make sure that you are all the way back before you go out. it worked for me

Key word being could. If you don't go to a bootfitter and get evaluated, you're just throwing money blindly at the problem. Sure it MAY work for you the first time, or it may do absolutely nothing and waste your time, comfort, and money.

Go see a good, reputable boot-fitter.

used to happen to me. from what i was told, when u smash ur toes in the front of your boots it creates small pockets under the toe nail where fungus can grow, and sweaty boots don't help. u can get some topical stuff from a doctor that kinda helps.

good luck

Seems like they have packed out to the point of being too big. Go to a bootfitter, they are the only ones who can help you. Not a bunch of 12yr old armchair ski experts.
