So my school blocked Wikipedia today...

because it is a totally unreliable source of information. and they don't want kids using it for that reason. people can edit it, hell i edit shit all the time to make no sense if i know someone who is doing a report on that subject. (yes i'm a dick, thank you)

uhhhh. wiki's an awesome source of info, they got lots of people doing it seriously enough now that the major topics are pretty legit.. OMG you edited January 5, 1322.. A COMET HIT TODAY.. YOUR A BAD ASS!

uhh no it definitely is not dude. my teachers won't even accept sources that are from wiki...don't kid yourself, it's definitely not legit, at all.

i think i have used wikipedia once, most college professors (in my experience at least) wont let you use wiki as a reference anyways.

because half the shit on their is fake and they dont want stupid kids thinking its real and using it as a source on a report or something?

Before you jump all over Wikipedia you may want to take a look at this article and a slew of others

http://www.journalism.co.uk/2/articles/51643.php

To sum it up for those too lazy to click and read, Encyclopedia Brittanica has approximately the same error rate as Wikipedia. So if you are going to start bashing Wikipedia for inconsistencies, you might as well string up Brittanica right next to it.

Wiki is SUPER useful. Its a really good point for starting points in papers, but obviously dont site it because it isn't peer reviewed and can be easily edited, but its a good point just to gather general info. Your school is retarded if they blocked it

True, but many of my biology profs spend their free time working on the pages in their area of research.

Also, wikipedia is bad to cite... but the links they provide you with for each page = gold for college papers.

because anyone can put anything is there reason. what they dont realize is that all legit information is backed up with citations, so wiki can be a great time saver for finding legit sources.

high school computers are so wack, i dont even bother using them because i know every relevant site will be blocked.

My school has had it blocked. Generally its reliable, but you shouldn't take it without at least checking it. It can be used s a blog site for faggots

Absolutely. And as Rowen said, it's a great place to get linked to other resources. I use it all the time in college, not to cite, but just to gather information and resources.

maybe because you can edit articles and people are editing things and people like you are reading it and thinking its real and they keep getting bullshit esays that make no sense. But personally i think your schools retarded for doin that.

They looked over 42 entries. 42 out of how many? Which 42 did they look over? Who looked them over? The science journal "Nature's" experts. I bet they know everything those science journalists.

Are journalists ever really credible?

Check the sources before you believe any information.

exactly. I use it as a jumping off point. it's great to get the whole background on your topic and to find other more reliable sources. I would never cite it directly but it's very helpful. in my high school no one allows wiki except for history because he doesn't seem to care to much about anything anyways. which is funny because we were in the library today doing a report on a president and I wanted to edit it to all random info and dates but I think president wikis are blocked from editing?

dude, exactly what I said.. somthing completely random as hell.. YEAH not legit because newschool skiing isnt really that popular.. now lets check out somthing like independence day..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_(United_States)

seems pretty damn legit...

but yeah college professors dont take it as a reliable source.. but what you can do is use the sources wiki uses because they cite them at the bottom and take it from there.

what im talking about are like videos, dates etc.. not random ass things like "Tanner Hall Chads Gap Switch 1080 to do me cause im a noob."

Once you get into college you'll have pretty much unlimited access to the school library. Readings a bitch but if our parents managed so can we.

If your still intent on using the internet and your going into the Humanities/ Arts stream of study your university should offer you unlimited access to scholarly articles. These are articles taken from scholarly periodicals written by people with an area of expertise in their field. They're perfectly credible and professors encourage you to use them.

I understand professors will often use their spare time to edit wikipedia articles and I'll even use them myself for basic understanding. But once you've grasped a concept in a particular field search for it in other more credible mediums. Wiki's great for background knowlege but never source it for particulars. At least in college.

yeah wiki is pretty unreliable in some places, but with the real important shit they dont let you edit it. If there is not a button that allows you to edit, then that is an indicator of its relyableness. and also, they made it so you have to make an account to edit, so it isnt as easy (even though it takes 5 second to make an account) to edit shit as it was a year ago.

it isn't acknowldged as an academic source, therefore should never be relied upon for accurate information. (Although i find it useful for general knowledge when i dont know whats up with something)

wikipedia is the shit. anyone who hates on it is an ignorant asshole who hates freedom of information and education. Obviously shits gonna be fucked in some of it....but thats why you don't take what you read literally. Seriously unless your programming a nuclear reactor its really doens't matter if you have some little mistakes, wikipedieas perfect for any things you want to find out about or learn more of. It obviously shouldn't be the basis of your thesis paper of the foundings of your education, but its a good solid effort at free information and easy access.

go to google mexico...and type teh site in then go to the link....then in the url where it says en=mx.....change it to en=en....that should bypass your system

yeah thats why you dont list it as a source. i use it all the time, i just list the sources it has on the bottom of the article or find some phonies on amazon.

whenever I have edited something on wikipedia it gets changed right back. and i know enough to tell when something is obvious bullshit.

Wikipedia is great for school you can use it to introduce yourself to a topic and as a starting point. I used one wiki to direct me to certain sections of the USMJ and congressional bills and I got an A. My teacher wrote on it, "i'd be interested to know how you extracted these points so skillfully!". If only he knew.

"Wikipedia is the best thing ever. Anyone in the world can write anything they want about any subject. So you know you are getting the best possible information." Michael Scott

I dont know why, but just use flyproxy.com or whatever.

I love editing my schools wiki page. yes, chuck norris was an alumni.

I use wikipedia as a research resource both for courses in my degree and in the office I work at during research.

Citing wikipedia is invalid sure, but considering virtually all information on wikipedia is cited itself, you can easily find the root information and simply cite that resource.

If you can't figure that out on your own thats kind of funny.

Wikipedia is a fine resource for information, if you are not using it to find information for projects you work on, you are missing out.

It is important to recognize that wikipedia isn't subjected to a rigorous review process like anything published is, but it's not necessarily wrong. Most of what's on wikipedia is completely valid information.

I use the math and science pages for school (college, senior, physics) and my job (weather forecasting/analysis) all the time. And I have never used something that turned out to be totally wrong. I have only noticed a few incorrect facts over the years, and I have corrected them.

Of course you can't cite wikipedia in a paper, or use formulas from it without verifying them and the results you got. But sometimes it will provide insight that can't be found anywhere else without doing a lot more searching.

Any school that blocks wikipedia needs new administrators.

wiki is great for a general idea about a topic, most information is correct, but can be changed by anyone, therefor not a reliable source to use for a research.

and i quote

"

Table-top Jumps

A jump that looks somewhat like a triangle or trapezoid in which

you take off of a flat part, clear a lip in the air, and then land on a

helicopter."

"

Spine

A jump, similar to a Hip Jump, in which the 7 is on either side of the horse bump."

Wikipedia is pretty legit. My school doesnt accept it as a source, but most of them go as far as reccomending that we use external links from the wiki page.

word yeah, the professors are just bitter because it was 100 times harder for them to search information than it is for you.

wikipedia is good if you just want to have general knowledge about something, or as a starting point. Or you can use their resources. Thats how i did a 12 page paper earlier this year, i researched my topic on there, got a broad view of what it was in the first paragraph, then went straight to the bottom where the sources of that info are, and used that
