The thing is, there are no good ways to die. They all suck. Better not die in a situation where you get yourself and maybe others killed because you fucked up (there will be people putting their lives at risk trying to recover your dumb-ass body). It really is an embarassing way to go, better to not be remembered for making a big mistake in the backcountry.
I was an aquaintance with someone who was in a fatal collision with another skier. It wasn't their fault, they said they were shocked that they had contributed to this person's death, and all ski patrol did was take their statement, and baasically tell them to have a nice day. It happened in the morning, and they were done with the whole thing by lunchtime. This kid is getting charged because he was extremely reckless. If this lady had been under a rollover, like some people have been suggesting, he would not be getting criminally charged.
