SNOW: freeride/freestyle skiing game

To be honest, out of all skiing games, I have liked the Jibbin jump physics the best. It is actually a challenge to do a realistic looking rodeo 5 or cork 7 in Jibbin. You had to hold the arrow key at the right time to do a 5, and at a different time to do a 10. If you missed your timing, you would simply not land the trick. I like Shredsauce, but I really think that Jibbin's jump physics trump all skiing games.

I went back and watched one of my old Jibbin edits, and I remembered how many tries it used to take me to get the shot for each trick.

tl;dr: jibbin has the best, most challenging jump physics IMO

If anyone has never played Jibbin, this is what it looks like:

As you can see, the spin speed in the air is constant. In Shredsauce, the spin speed picks up over time while in the air. However in Jibbin, you stay at one speed throughout the trick. This speed is decided by what time you press the arrow key after leaving the jump. If you press it early, you will spin fast. Press it later and you will spin slower.

^haha oh god I forgot how disproportional the character/feature ratio was.

But I see your argument for the jibbin physics, but I still like shred sauce better.

Well, from what we have so far, I'd say we have a mix between the two. We like that in Shredsauce there is momentum in your spins, but feel that it could be improved by combining it with Jibbin's ability to control your spin speed.

Great job so far guys looks sick!! the only suggestion I really have that i havent heard anyone mention yet is live weather. I think it would be sick if you could be skiing and a storm can just come in at some point and start dumping and actually allow snow to accumulate/melt. I don't know too much about game design so I'm not sure how feasible that actually is, but I feel like it would definitely add some excitement to the game if there were constantly changing conditions.

Bah, posted in wrong thread! Sorry for the spam :(

Hi Everyone.

BIG Announcement today! We have partnered with Tom Wallisch, Tanner Hall and Russ Henshaw to make sure that SNOW offers the best freeskiing experience possible.

Check out our press release and 3 new screenshots here.

wtf this is sick just looked at the screenshots with tod walnuts, this game looks amazing keep up the great work looks like lots of effort has been made in this game!!

high hopes for this, the graphics look reallllly well done, and the little challenges like the "ski in between 10 trees" and "close call" for bonus points show you guys definitely know what you're doing

Haha, that's a pretty good idea actually. Maybe we could make them as masks you can wear in-game? Or a reward for doing something derp-y...

Is this where I think it is?

also just little visual tweaks that i feel like would be easy and would help make it closer to reality, but on tom wallisch maybe give him twintips and make the poles a little smaller

I was thinking the same thing. Pole-length editing seems to be a must. Those poles look long even for just normal skiing, too, though.

Sorry if this has already been asked; but, will there be an objective to this game? I found that the main flaw with Shredsauce was that you just went down runs, will there be a score or a way to play against friends and achievements and other objectives such as levels, cash you can win to unlock new upgrades and things like that? Thanks, and sorry again if this has already been answered.

From their blog -

"In this post I will briefly talk about the different types of events that you will be able to compete in in SNOW. Our goal is to create a solid foundation of events for users to compete in around the mountain. Once we have a feel for what users like, we can design more types of events and add them to the game.

These are the events that we have come up with so far, but we hope to edit and expand this list as time goes on based on your feedback. As usual, if you have any ideas or comments, please make yourself heard on our Forum.

Freestyle - Freestyle events are un-timed, challenging the player’s knowledge of the mountain / snowpark and skill in performing tricks. Attempting to earn as many points as possible in a single session, the player must successfully perform their best tricks and combos to take the top spot.

Freeride - In Freeride events, the player will receive points based upon a combination of time and accuracy on a given course. Accuracy is defined by checkpoint markers that direct the player down a predetermined route.

Big Air - Like Freestyle events, Big Air events are all about skill in performing tricks- but this time, the tricks take place on a single jump on the mountain / in the snow park. Encouraging players to think big, players are given three attempts to achieve as high a score as possible on one jump. Some Big Air events may even require a predetermined trick to be performed for the points to be recorded.

Descent - Similar to Freeride, in Descent events the player must reach the finish line as quickly as possible. Based purely on time, the player must figure out the fastest route down the mountain without the aid of checkpoint markers.

Speed Trap - In Speed Trap events, the player is given a marker which they must pass through at the highest possible speed. These markers will all pose certain challenges to the player due to their location within difficult terrain.

All of these events will of course be in addition to a Free Roam mode. In Free Roam, you will be able to choose your own line down the mountain, with points being awarded for tricks and how long it takes for you to reach the bottom."

you know what i think would be sick? Is if in this game there is a feature where you start out a local park rat/big mountain skier, and you have to work your way up to becoming a pro. You could start out with some sort of film challenges to make a video for sponsorships, there could be a competition challenge where you start out doing local comps and work your way up to like grand prix or usasa nationals. If anyone has ever played tony hawk's proving ground, that is the type of format i'm talking about.

kinda, but on a more drastic level. In skate, he's already doing film shoots and photo shoots with thrasher and shit. I think it could be on a more realistic level, like you and your buddies filming and screwing around n shit. (HOWEVER, i only know story line of skate 3, not skate 2 or 1. dont know if its like that or not)

its a cool app but apparentley a misty is a cork and any flip other than a backie and frontflip or a cork according to your game. no hate

Pole length is something we're aware of. Though we can easily just fix the length of the poles, there are a few animations that require the poles to be planted in the ground, so we would have to also redo/add new animations for shorter poles. The poles we are using now were made a long time ago, when the project was just starting out, so we will eventually get around to making new ones. As for the skis, they are twin-tipped, but could do with a more pronounced tail.

Not great excuses but hey, we're a small team with lots to do!

let say you only do like 3 pole length long, medium and small and only do animation for the 3 anw that's just how i would do it but continue the good work

This idea has been tossed around on here for so long, and it just isn't too feasible for a small company like poppermost to invest all the time and not to mention money into a commodity like this. They are probably more focused on just putting a game out, rather than doing what seems not too hard, but in reality, proving ground was built around the concept, and took years to make. That was with some of the best guys in the business with a huge budget. Unless this game was centered around this concept to start with, there is a very small chance that they would release something on that scale. On the other hand, this game could potential become the benchmark for skiing games, and if it is a success, who knows where it might go from there.
