SNOW: freeride/freestyle skiing game

after watching that video a thousand times i gotta say the skis are def too long, i think it would look a lot better if they were shorter. Easy fix though

I've never had the chance to do that cuz I ski on a "hill" haha but I've gone 60 before down our steepest slope. It just seems unreasonably fast to me. It's just my opinion after watching the video. Everything seemed pretty sweet.

Weellllll....

it seems fast when you are going down a sketchy slope with dulled edge park skis, but it was probably more like 40 or 50. 80 is slightly ridiculous for something that hasn't been groomed into a race slope.

I'm not saying that only racers can go fast, all these claims just seem so over the top.

We've clocked ourselves bombing the steepest slope at 7springs. I take care of my skis and don't hit many rails so the edges are sharper and I don't have big gauges in the bottom of my skis. I'm just saying I know what it feels like to go pretty fast down a hill and in the video of SNOW, the speed seem awkward.

Curious about skier animations, I didn't notice any pole planting, arm movement, stance widening in turns or anything. Do you guys plan to implement it? The skier looks quite rigid in the video, but then I do know it's not the final version by any means.

This is an early ALPHA of the game, I'm sure it's nowhere near finished, and that's what amazes me that the game looks this good this early, so stoked for the finished product

I was curious about this too. The spot where his poles are at is kinda back, and you need to push your hands out and be more aggressive when you are skiing powder. Maybe they are just basing it off of all these park skiers who keep their hands way back.

Which is fine, you just lean back in powder if you do that.

All of our animations are currently done to a "first pass" quality. This means that we did all of the animations quickly to see how they work with gameplay and know what animations we would need to add or change in the future. On top of that, a majority of animations are done as "poses" which are completely static. The engine then transitions between the poses at a pre-determined speed.

Because of all of this, the animations are not ideal. We are totally aware of that. Doing animations is very hard and takes a long time (and a lot of money) so we want to be sure exactly what animations we need to do before we begin working on them. We also have to use reference material which is not always easy to find and doesnt always provide the necessary angles we need to get the right look.

We are aware that the powder skiing doesn't look natural. We dont have a system for using different animations on different terrain, so we decided to first start with a more park/piste look before going back and doing powder skiing animations.

Once the game is out we will be working with our community to refine and figure out exactly what animations should play, and when. We can also crowdsource reference material and hopefully have some of you record the material youself as examples. Until now we've been using videos of our athletes from their various competition runs or segments.

Hope that helps give you an idea where we're at.

really pumped for this.. it should hopefully kick some major console game companies to develop a game that focuses of freestyle skiing. The olympics will also hopefully bring it into the public eye more too having the same effect

or you let us do it buy supporting the game and proving that there is a market out there to develop a game like this for. Who's to say SNOW won't be on consoles?

I think you guys are already on your way to proving there is a market out there with the feedback you got from the Gamespot feature

Yes I understand what a freemium model is. I hate them. They were all the rage as of a year or so ago. I am sick and tired of them now and honestly would rather just shell out $60 for a full game and have some awesome huge bundles and updates released later for nominal charges. Ie. add on packs. I hate making individual purchases and what not. I would rather play a game and earn new conent.

Yeah-well-you-know-thats-just-like-your-opinion-man.jpg

hopefully covered a few things that are of interest, a lot of it was spoiled by the gamescom interview, an annoying amount of questions that I had already asked got asked in the gamescom thing, but oh well, figured I'd use it beneficially.

I really hope it will be possible to customize your character without paying. That was an issue with youriding, is that to have anything besides the original jacket and pants you would have to pay. Especially with multiplayer coming where you can see each other skiing, I really don't want to have to pay to be able to tell my friends apart from each other. So hopefully there will be some clothes (maybe not brand name) that we won't have to pay for.

Oh probably. They would still want to display all the features of the game to the free users and keep everyone engaged.

Yeah, that just really irked me about youriding. I don't even need brand name stuff without paying, just some of the local stuff Snow makes.

agreed. The free to play model sucks and completely ruins games for me.

Users are more likely to quickly lose engagement as they feel they must continuously shell out money to progress in the game.

The traditional extension/add on model + free demo is much more sustainable IMHO.

You don't need to pay to progress, only to customize from what I've seen. You'll be able to play literally the whole game, but if you want to wear the sick b-dog jacket with your armada skis, you're going to have to pay a bit.

I'm betting you have to pay for new levels, grabs, etc. They're not going to make ANY money if they only charge for appearance items.

Additional mountains will always be free. We do not want to fragment the player base. We believe that a good core experience with no "pay-walls" will result in a more dedicated user that is willing to spend money for a more "personalized" experience.

So certain grabs will be pay-to-use?

Eh, I'm more or less okay with that. These guys have to have compensation for such a sick game somehow.

Oh, excellent. I could not tell from that post what you were inferring. So far so good. Keep up the spectacular job.

Yeah but that's not essential to actually playing the game. Any gear you can buy would probably have an equivalent performer already in the game if you didn't feel like making a purchase.

Doing what? Have SNOW play on your console?

Get approx. $10,000 for a devkit.

Then start getting the game compatible.

or...

You could spec a decent mid-level gaming desktop for $500 and wait for the actual game release.

Take notes from team fortress 2's free to play model. IMO they did a very good job of implementimg paid elements in the game without detracting from the overall experience. I never felt forced to spend money, but there were times I did anyway. TF2's free to play model is one of the only ones that I haven't found obnoxious.

EXACTLY! Valve's F2P model kicks ass! I have spent money in TF2, DOTA2, and CS:GO. My 3 favorite games!

Just saw this on their Facebook Page:

http://snowthegame.com/2013/09/24/brand-partnerships/

"We have partnered with some of the biggest brands in the world! SCOTT Sports, Faction Skis, Full Tilt Boots, K2 Skis, Line Skis, Marker Bindings, POC SAUNA beanies & wear, VÖLKL and Armada Skis"

From these images, it does look like some of the skis are mounted a huge amount back from centre and others closer. Does this mean we can chose where to mount our skis in the game? And will this effect performance, similar to real life?

The character needs some changes, make the knees bend more. In the current gameplay thats been released they look way to straight.

all of those pics look soo sweet!!! non of the skis are mounted dead center tho...Will different skis affect the gameplay that much? like more flex on al dente than on stiffer skis or is that way too far ahead?
