Skiing's Really Lame Now

Why do you care what people like hendrick promote??? Click into your bindings and ski, nothing will ever change the way you ski, not even the fucking olympics.

We ski because we like the feeling of sliding down a mountain on planks. Sure the lifestyle that comes with it might change but the very essence of why we love this sport remains the same.

I don't get how normal skiers get heated about this stuff. There is no way any of this will change how I ski whatsoever. Mabeye the publicity will result in more resorts deciding to put money into their parks, but that is the only change I could see happening (mabeye).

whatever kid..

skiing has. is. and will continue to be hyphy as fuck. listen to this

learn cappped switch 7 blunts and get your stoke back on high.

this is why skiing might still be perceived as the turn down

or...

but if you love ski racing or hanging out with your buds on axis, maybe it's not the turn down at all. honestly park skiings been lame for a while with masses of kids skerping around on flat boxes, listening to absurdly thug music in clothes that should fit fat joe

the creativity involved with freeskiing is limitless unless you deliberately choose to be negative/ constrict yourself/ get phased by pop culture

people are constantly changing what is viewed as possible on skis and this is why we have become so passionate about this lifestyle. for us, the satisfaction that comes from skiing with friends and energy associated with progression is unmatched in any other aspect of life

Don't think you can really state this with any confidence either way.

How does slopestyle and halfpipe being in the olympics change anything about skiing pow, park, pipe, urban, or whatever else you decide to do? I'm actually curious to see what you believe is going to happen.

The people complaining don't seem to be worried about how skiing is ACTUALLY going to change, they seem to be worried about how other people will think of them when they say they are freeskiers.

OP, you say Henrik is a hypocrite for claiming to be "the core of the sport," but also being in Sochi. Has Henrik ever claimed to be the core of the sport, or has ns defined him as such? I think it's much more the latter.

You are also worried that Henrik and other comp skiers are promoting what people like you "stand against." What does that mean? What are you referring to when you say "people like you?" What is it that you stand against?

Pretty much anything falls into this category once it/ if it hits mainstream. Thats what happens when the general public decides something is cool but doesn't care to learn the in's and outs.

Honestly, I felt this way about freeskiing when 6-8 years ago all of a sudden the terrain parks started filling up with gapers on twins that switched from snowboarding and ski boarding. No problem in people coming over to skiing, but when its a bunch of fantasy factory watching frat bros I just cannot handle it.

I just view the current social status in our sport like skateboarding is. There are comp dudes and video part dudes. And video parts will always be a little more underground, supportive of lifestyle insight, and a focus on detail oriented aesthetic with the sport.... but the comps will generate awareness, money, and (weather you agree or not) progression.

Blunt Metaphor: Comp skiing is Redbull, and Film skiing is Beer

you guys are all getting trolled SO hard. whattup dylan

but anyway, even though dylan isn't serious, all the competition/noncreative/hype/publicity will be gone in about 7 days, when the olympics is done. then, our sport will go back to fun edits, TC, the weak, totally trevor, and relative obscurity. everyone remain calm

Just look at how this website changed over the olympics. Everyone was shitting themselves over it. Hundreds of the same kind of thread were made all saying the same thing. To me skiing is just bumming around with your friends doing whatever you want to. Not some internationally broadcasted bull crap on NBC.

Yeah we might get a few new free skiers out of it, but really all that is going to happen the gapers will invade the parks and think that they are free skiers. Which in my eyes is ok I'll just ski around them but it's just gonna clutter everything.

If you don't want to agree with me that's fine.

Just wondering, what are you guys' thought about how T-Hall is bashing the olympics? If he made this thread would you be bashing him or agreeing? I think that Freesking has changed, but you have the choice of whether you let that affect you.

and i laugh at how you say Henrik "claims" to be the core of the sport. Henrik claims nothing..... Henrik just slays in every aspect of skiing.....including comp skiing

I think it's cool, and that's why I like the Olympics. It's fun to watch our sport pushed to new levels. Fuck you if you think that the slope runs weren't historical, or even sick. Anyone skiing and being stoked is sick, no matter if there are rules or not.

If skiing is bummin around for you, great, who gives a fuck. Just like you don't have to give a fuck about the Olympics. It's not like the IOC is gonna come fuck you in the butthole because you're not skiing correctly. Numbers aren't really gonna change. There are still gonna be the little faggots (sorry, but it's true) that only skee 2 b kool, but you don't have to change.

I just think you all are being old hags about it all. I wish I could put into better words that freeskiing is still just as free, but some people like to compete and that's not a bad thing.

Someone, anyone, please tell me how the Olympics and any other big comp is making your freeskiing any less free.

you'd be surprised. curling, hockey, bobsled, they all have hype right now, but they go back to being relatively unfollowed sports

You are absolutely the reason why freeskiing is lame now

If we want skiing to go back to normal I think we need to exile the heath bar

Why dont you go windsurfing broh

That's because it's the first time it's ever happened. Of course people were excited about it.

Again, how does the olympics stop you or anyone else from "just bumming around with your friends," or even change that experience for you at all?

Comp skiing is not synonymous with free skiing. Maybe that's what's confusing you? Slopestyle and pipe being made a part of the olympics has absolutely zero effect on what freeskiing is.

How are the olympics a bad thing? It's exposing the sport more, and that's a good thing, right? The other day people at my school were talking about the slopestyle competition, and I thought that was like the coolest thing ever.

OP liked skiing before it was cool... Why can't you be more like jossi? be a hipster but also be cool as fuck? oh right that's because apparently anyone who has made it to a profesional level and is able to compete for their country at the worlds biggest stage is apparently a sellout and ruining skiing? Get the fuck off NS skiing is about the good times and vibes, this isn't formula one with all the politics, you go down a mountain throw some tricks and that's it

Literally nothing you talked about has to do with skiing, it has to do with your attitude. All that other stuff is just bullshit that's related to the industry.

I'm a skier. This isn't fucking politics like everyone tries to make it into. It's recreation, an escape.

Skiing is an individual sport. If you let someone else's creativity or lack thereof affect your experience then YOU are the problem. Not everyone else. Seriously.

It amazes me how like half the people on this site have turned into whiny little bitches about how "skiings not the same" and that the hill will be filled with gapers everyday. NOTHING has even changed from what I have seen. There has not been a huge interest in the skiing community and I bet a ton of people have no idea what slope style even is. It;s still the same and will be for a while so quit bitching

Fuck I'm so sick of this argument... How can the Olympics affect how YOU feel when you ski?? Skiing is an experience that only the skier can have. The Olympics don't lessen the stoke I get when building the backcountry set up that I've been dreaming about for years.

Stop being a pussy and finding excuses. Your argument is disgustingly hipster. Get over yourself and ski for fuck sakes.

Also, I'm just going to leave this here cause I am unbelievably stoked to hit this:

Stop thinking so hard and go skiing with friends, make edits, chug some brews, break some bones and slay year after year. Simple as that.

You should probably change your signature quotes if you're serious about what you're writing.

"Sadly, our sport is a million sheep with only a few shepherds" - Leigh Powis.

Stop being the sheep that gets 'turned off by all the senseless bullshit in this sport.' Why are you no longer finding yourself sleepless before a ski day? Because you're worried the good skiers on the hill will think you aren't as 'good' as them? Make what you do in life your own thing and stop caring what other people think.

As your MLKjr. quote says, stop being so ignorant.

I just figure that writing anything during the Olympics is just going to get lost in the flood of Olympics coverage. Seems that a lot of others have thought this as well. Besides the Olympics, there has been kind of a lull in anything that doesn't involve the 5 ring circus.

Fuck interesting articles about skiing, I want to an update on Gus and his puppies!!!! Or who Nick is going to take on a date!

So the fact that the Olympics are happening on the other side of the earth is causing you to lose your passion for skiing? Shit man, I get that the olympics might not be good for skiing's culture and industry, but you can always just go out and ski. I'm not a big fan of the olympic thing going on lately either, but skiing itself is completely separate.

you know, makes me think. the first time i've been to the amusement park,i was the happiest kid on earth, definitely

the second was ALMOST just as fun

now my third time i was 5 years older or so and didn't have half as much fun as the 2 previous times.

and last year I went and found 2 rides fun, the rest sucked.

....

I'd be a pissy bitch too if I had to ski in Missouri. You're taking this sport for granted. Get off NS and just go ski, don't pay attention to "the scene"

I suggest you get out of St. Louis

We got to see pretty much the top 5 slopestyle runs of all time, and in my opinion, the cleanest/smoothest pipe run ever (yea New Zealand!!), and while this was happening, everyone in the world was still allowed to ski wherever they wanted, however they wanted, just like the rest of the time when the olympics aren't happening. Not really sure how anyone who enjoys skiing and/or watching skiing could possibly be upset right now.
