Skiing is Cool Again

While White, a.k.a. the Flying Tomato because of his wild red hair,

lolled 16 feet above the rim of the pipe, spinning lazily, skiers like

Maine's Simon Dumont launched 20 feet into the troposphere

damn straight

Emma Gardner, 15, and Julie Traylor, 16, ogling Dumont, partly because he can throw a 1,260-degree spin and partly because he is "dead-sexy" and "steezy," which means he has style with ease.

haha i thought it was very well written. And i lol'ed at the part where he said "skiing was a way for Norwgians to get to the grocery store,"

cool i guess... kinda lame... i liked skiing being sorta underground... i dont want it all mass produced and sold out like snowboarding...

dude, skiing never was and never will be cool. it's totally lame and everyone should stop skiing... especially on powder days.

it's funny- Tony Hawk said "people don't call you a sell out until your stuff actually sells out." i agree with him 100%. snowboarding didn't sell out. some people have made some stupid business moves, but the sport hasn't sold out- it's been incredibly successful. there's a difference.

snowboardings sold out so damn much. Have you seen next years burton. The andy worhol collection. God damnit, a famous artist painting up jackets that is selling out especailly for a company thats claming to be for riders by riders. Even though skiing is becoming more mainstream we are still very underground compared to snowboarding.

Its not bigger in my school. We have maybe 10 kids that ski, not all kids in park. mostly kids that race. We have about 200 "snowboarders". Probably 150 out of those kids actually snowboard, the rest say they do but don't. I think kids snowboard because they think its cool because so many people do it, but i also think that kids are seeing that in skiing.

mind explaining to me what K2's tribute to Dali, Worhol, DaVinci (doesn't get more famous than that when it comes to art) and a handful of other artists was? how about how Armada used Madsteez two years in a row? just because you use an artist's work or create a design inspired by an artist's work doesn't mean you're selling out.

when you have a legit example of how snowboarding is selling out, let me know. and keep in mind that you don't get too much more sold-out than the boy who brought new school skiing to the rest of the world and can now be found on MTV's payroll.

snowboarding knows how to market to people our age much better than skiing. that's the bottom line. they aren't selling out, they're doing a great job being the shit. they aren't faking it- they love snowboarding- they aren't riding just for money, they're riding AND making money. when they start using their past successes in snowboarding to shamelessly whore themselves out, then they've sold out. until then, they're just as legit as skiers, but better at selling shit.

Skiing is totally cool, and way easier than snowboarding. Also, snowboard boots just suck...

i've never really heard anyone complain about snowboard boots compared to ski boots... usually it's the other way around.

skiing was always cool...its just the kids are finally opening their eyes. If you been riding long enough you would see that....too bad we woun't be having too many good seasons anymore.

skiing is always cooler. gapers like snowboarding though so in their world sean white is the only person ever to ride a halfpipe.

imo I do not think that snowboarding sold out, it just became popular. Just because 8 year old nerds start listening to a band doesn't mean that they sold out, and I think the same applies to snowboarding. It has totaly lost coolness though. You know something is not cool anymore after you see John Kerry and grand parents try to do it.

i guess ive been doing uncool things on the mountain for 14 years and 65 days now but at least now im cool

i think they just didnt mention tanner becasue

1. he did not go as big as dumont on the first hit

2. he did not throw the first ever double back in the pipe (at X)

3. the switch 1080 was done by some snowboarders in the x games pipe the same year.

but Skiing has always been cooler, duh.

i like skiing not being veiwed as cool by most people because that just means we get to keep the secret to ourselves
