Skiing has become incomprehensible to the general public.

Been talking to a lot of people and reading things posted online about the X Games, and I keep hearing people say I just don't get it. They don't get how these skiers/snowboarder are doing triples and doubles and flipping off rails. The sports have progressed so far ahead that people can grasp what they are viewing.

Now is this a bad thing? I think it could be it might drive people away from picking up freeskiing. They see something like a triple and think well I will never be able to do that so why brother trying.

Is it time to say enough with the progression and just keep it in cruise control for a while so people can catch back up to what is going on? Or keep pushing the sport and pushing more people away from it?

Not really, kids see baseball players on tv hitting a ball to left field and the outfielder runs and catches it. They think hey I can do that. Sit that same kid down in front of someone doing a triple and they might think how did that happen?

Saturday night me and my friends watched old x games footage and we were all stoked on it because it is something we can all relate to, a switch nine makes sense. Just like how a baseball player hitting a ball makes sense.

Yeah, but trying out baseball is easy, and its a mainstream sport whereas people will see it and think: Hell no, It looks way too difficult. I mean, in baseball there are only a few things to do so you can get pretty good after 20 hours maybe, but i've been skiing since I was three, and can't even do a flip after probably nearly a 1000 hours of skiing.

I think that most people find it incomprehensible because they have never had an urge to do anything like it. I read somewhere that it is a mutated gene that causes people to want to do extreme sports and that only 15% of people have it so realistically that is a very small percentage. Majority of people go about there lives without any urge to seek out adrenaline or progress in this manner so there is no way they can understand what is going on. I don't think that matters though as there will still be the thrill seekers out there who are searching for it no matter what and because of this progression can't stop. People vibe off the feeling of doing something new to much to think hold on lets let the world catch up so they can understand. There gonna think fuck that I'm gonna fucking send it.

the way I see it is if pros are throwing nose butter triple 1620's, then more basic tricks like flips, 3's, 5's etc seem even more doable to beginners if that makes sense. Unless you have the intention of actually becoming pro then I think the level of skiing these days should inspire people more rather than make them want to give up completely.

Look at skateboarding, you have guys like P Rod doing tre flips to crooks, and guys like Bob Burnquist, pretty much doing skiing tricks on a skateboard. The average person cant comprehend how those guys are doing any of the things that they do, but yet millions of kids still go and pick up the sport. The same goes with gymnastics. And it will be the same way with skiing.

Yes! We should limit people to 180s, 360s, spread eagles, and riding across the box. Also should limit the jump size to 5 feet and the rails to 8 foot long boxes.

Then everybody that watches will be like OMG I CAN DO THAT! and the world will be saved right?

Ya that's my point... If you feel like you could do a cork , with practice you for sure could but you might not think it's worth the risk.

Of anything I think it should make people see that our sport takes a crazy amount of athleticism.

The general public can't really comprehend a cork 7 either. Since it seems they can only fully comprehend a backflip should we only do those? At least wth doubles or triples they can see how many flips are in the trick and it is equally as mindblowing, which is what our sport is about. For the spectators!

I see what your getting at however I don't think it drives kids away from the sport. They seem that triple cork and say wow I want to do that and try out freesking. They might realize that they're not good and say this sucks and quit or realize they suck and say fuvk it I don't care, I'm having fun. I suck however I love skiing so I keep doing it, I know I won't ever do a triple but that doesn't bother me, I just go out and have fun

This. Look at any extreme sport; the majority of what happens are hard to comprehend. That's why it makes things like motocross and skiing so intriguing to watch by the general public

Chief Women's Skiing hater trob, here. This is how the general public perceives freeskiing... which I think is amazing because it's so far from off. See you in Sochi, Grete. Oh wait... Thank God for girls that ski with their skis and not with their sponsor pull.

The sad reality is that people watch the xgames and then they think that they CAN do some of the stuff in there, when in reality they probably couldn't even slide a rail

Trying out for baseball isn't necessarily easy, much like any sport. Sure, field a few tricky grounders and hit into the outfield and you're on the team, but it takes years and years of dedication and practice to become a great baseball player and maybe play on a pro level. And there aren't just a few things involved in baseball, there's a shitload. It took me super long to simply get baserunning, but eventually you get the hang of it after working harder.

Same thing with freeskiing, anyone can get on the bandwagon and click into a set of park skis and hit a flat box, but its the skiers who are out there everyday for years pushing themselves harder and harder who actually progress into freestyle athletes. It's like any other sport that has the ability to advance to professional levels, you get out what you put in.

And back to yourself, I bet you could easily do a backflip, you just need to practice it. It's all in the hips. (-Chubbs Peterson)
