SKI SUNDOWN 2012-2013

Have a couple quick questions about tomorrow.

1. What time is the jam?

2. Do you need a waiver with parent signature?

3. Is there other open features on stinger?

Just wondering because im still not sure about doing it as i am not that good. thanks

And I heard that Toms will be open with park Sunday? That comp set up is nuts haha seriously wtf !

Registration from 10-11:30, comp at 12. Yes, you need a waiver and a helmet. Yes, stinger will have other features on it, not sure on the final setup for the public park today, headed into work now to see figure that out.

S-rail is in to replace the two down rails, some minor changes were made to the rail jam setup form yesterday so it can know be open to everyone. Barrel and corrugated are still up at the top from yesterday as well.

the corrugated up top is still up (2nd hit), the one down at the bottom (on the side of the rail jam setup) is not.

just got one question. is the rail jam setup ever going to be moved around a little. right now evrything is very jammed and it is very hard to hit 2 features. i just feel like it would work better if the setup was spread out more. just my .02 cents

Already done.

We left it for yesterday because it would be the fastest way to open it for the day, we had some more time today to make some changes (everything but the cannon came out, the round rail was made a flat rail). Also we added a pole jam to redirect at the top, a bit hard on skis, but pretty fun, and a corrugated tube above the s-rail (it's on a quarterpipe style drop in...hard to explain). Looking to add a few more things on Stinger then move on to Tom's Friday...again, just the plan, we'll have to wait to see if it works out that way, haha.

Tom's Treat Park is now up and open. Flat rail, quarterpipe barrel bonk, double barrel rail, tree stall, a couple rollers, hitching post, and a hip/table. Stinger has the barrel to corrugated up top with the pole jam to bank, corrugated on quarterpipe, s-rail, 32, jump, cannon, and round rail.

We're going to wait for this heat to pass before changing anything up on stinger so we don't ruin the ice layer, but after that there should be a rearrange coming.

^couldn't find your tooth Sam, sorry.

Stinger needed a slight rebuild to move some snow around, s-rail, round rail, and cannon are out, corrugated up top will be changed slightly, lift tower is back in (where the s-rail was), close-out is in. More snowmaking this weekend...should be able to build the trail up fully after that. Tom's shouldn't need to change though.

Is that round up rail still there? This setup was so dope.

Yo so im here for my first time today, got good comments and bad ones, but I'll hold off until the snow is better :) anyone gunna be here today?

Give your comments...that's the only way we know how to fix the bad ones, and make sure the good ones are repeated. Snow conditions might be a bit weird today...first night of cold after warm (I'm not in today, so I don't know...but I imagine its on the firm side, haha).

Okidoki.

Overall: This place has a great family feel, which I really like. I have nothing bad to say about the place so far!

Toms: The flow is AWESOME; you can hit it top to bottom without stopping, and you don't miss anything. Flat bar: no complaints with the setup, but it's a little sticky. Barrel spine: fucking perfect. Double barrel: great, wish the lip was wider though. Small metal box: fun, but the front edge is exposed and it's really sticky. Barrel bonk: great. Double barrel cannon: most perfect feature on the hill. Jump: just barely enough speed to hit after the cannon, but it works. Jump/hip: not enough speed for the jump, but the hip is fun. Great setup for beginner - intermediate.

Stinger: Too cramped, and not enough features. The corrugated and the mail box should be between the flat bar and the pole jam. Pole jam: fun, but when I take it deep I land on my tails; the landing needs some work. Corrugated: the takeoff is too narrow, difficult to soon onto. Mail box: same thing, the narrow lip makes spinning onto it unenjoyable. Flat bar: Haven't hit it; the rail isn't centered to the kicker, and the fact that the lip is so high compared to the rail makes it intimidating. Not because it looks difficult, but because it looks dangerous. Jump: the landing is a little steep, and the kicker is a bit lopsided, but it is still very hittable and speed is no issue.

I know a lot of the issues will be fixed with snow, and I hope to see some improvements when I come on Thursday :D

1. When I said the lip was too narrow on the double barrel I was referring to the shotgun rail, not the spine. 2. For the corrugated, I meant to write spin, not soon, autocorrect. 3. Did that all on my phone, so it lost the formatting I did; sorry if it's hard to read.

Glad you like Tom's...the stickiness has been a problem the last few days because of the humidity and for some reason our normal tricks aren't working right now. As far as Stinger... unfortunately your timing couldn't have been worse, haha...we just had to take a whole bunch of stuff out to redistribute some snow, and we're currently waiting for a bunch of snowmaking to happen over the end of this week/weekend...once we get that, we'll do a full (or mostly full) rebuild of Stinger to fix those concerns. The lip to the 32 (long rail before the jump) does need some work...we've just been putting it off because it's a block of ice and we didn't want to disturb it before the thaw last week and have it get really bad), but I assure you it isn't dangerous, I hit it every day without a second thought, it's a really flat lip, so you land perfectly on the rail, you don't get kicked high up. The narrow lips are because they were hand built and sometimes it's hard to judge how wide it needs to be while doing that. Also, you came on the one day were the morning guy is all by himself with no cat driver. I don't know how much we can do before Thursday...but like I said, next week should be big time for that trail.

Well figure out toms after stinger gets built up. After stinger gets built there will probably some corrugated on the trail...but not in the lower section...I'm thinking up top, haven't really decided yet.

Just saying, the very very top of Toms last year was awesome when you had the down lift tower or the down box...

Maybe in the spring...I like the lift tower on stinger for most of the year...but we'll see. I honestly haven't put too much thought into the toms build yet, gotta focus on stinger first, and I know for now at least I want the lift tower there.

i just have one more suggestion. try to keep boxes out of sight on stinger. when a 8 year old who pizzas down everything sees a box, thats all they want to do and that clogs up stinger and makes it really annoying to hit.

I agree...with the exception of our large boxes (40ft a frame and fdf box)...but all of our boxes need some sort of repair right now, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. But yeah, flat boxes make sense on toms now that we're building on it...low and incased in ice, haha.

Here again tonight, got another thing I noticed today. I'm not sure if others agree but the flat bar is too close to the kicker of the jump for my taste. The speed you need to hit the rail at to also hit the jump and go halfway down the landing is prohibitory

... Is prohibitory to the tricks you do on the rail, and you land so close to the kicker that you don't have much time to recover and reset from a sloppy landing.

Sorry, accidentally hit reply with my thumb. In a pretty weird state right now lol

Won't really know until after snowmaking so we know what we're working with. Got ideas, but don't want to share them cause if they don't happen people get annoyed.

We've had a couple people say something about the 32...I don't really have a hard time with it, if you land you take 2 turns and go off the jump, if you fall you can still hit the jump if you tuck straight into it. Also, that jump was intended to get bigger, making the speed better, and ideally the rail is a place holder...but like I said, I personally don't have a problem hitting the 32 and then going into the jump, I think it's fun and makes you focus on speed and edge control. Having a technical section like that is something I'm a fan of because it can be used to help you learn how to recover and still maintain.

Mostly Jarrod (park manager and asst. ski school director for those who don't know him)...I do a little sometimes though.

Stinger just got a major overhaul today. Barrel bonk up top, pole jam remains, corrugated on the hip remains, cannon and unbow replace the 32, lift tower stays, 32 is moved to below the lift tower and the jump was rebuilt (it's awesome...but needs to set up tonight because it's all sugar...it'll be open tomorrow). Lots of snowmaking over the next few days...after that maybe add more and work on a full rebuild on Toms.

Jarrod took a picture of Garth getting a rail, the rainbow rail was in the background, people jumped to conclusions. I don't know if it is or isn't...I just know it wasn't in the plan when I left yesterday afternoon.

Input from tonight:

Toms:

First little down rail is fun. Corrugated is great. Barrel bonk is great. Double barrel was good, but unfortunately it was closed off after my first run through it. The rail after it is uh..... just weird. Didn't see a single person hit it. Cannon to barrel is awesome, but it's too close to the jump if you want to hit both jumps after. Both jumps are great assuming you have enough speed; really poppy!

Stinger:

I don't really like the placement of the first two jumps (I would like them a bit farther down, and a bit closer to the center), but as far as size and everything else goes they're also great if you have enough speed. I didn't hit the cannon tonight, so I can't say if the landing has improved or not. Both the lower jumps were closed by the time I got there. The corrugated's kicker and landing were MUCH better this time around, and it's now a useful feature in the run. The new lift tower setup is great, and the wide lip is soooooo nice! The 32 is nice, but I wish the front of it went over the lip urban style; it's just more comfortable for me when I'm spinning onto something. Also, I wish there was a bit more space between the 32 and the next 2 rails, but if you stick the landing you're definitely in good shape for the next hit. The flat bar is awesome. The kink is pretty good. The up part is fun for spinning off, and I think it puts you at a good angle for the landing, however I would prefer if it was down-flat, with the flat part hanging over the landing a bit more (so that you land more downhill if you fall off at the kink). The flow from the corrugated to the last rails is absolutely perfect if you stick all the landings. If you put a couple features between the cannon and the corrugated you would have a serious park.

I noticed that ALL of the kickers on both runs were widened, and that was a really great and important improvement.

Now for the bad part:

The box thing is a real issue. I've seen alot of people attempt to hit features far beyond their ability level because they can't hit boxes. It wastes the lip of the kickers for the experienced skiers/riders, and it puts the inexperienced people at a serious safety risk. What exactly is the issue you're having with the screws? Are you countersinking them properly? Are you using a screw with a head made for countersinking? Are you using HDPE, or another material? Have you considered nuts and bolts as an alternative? If it's happening to all of the boxes and it isn't happening at other resorts, then it's pretty obvious that the issue is in the development, not the weather or the people using the features.

I'm going to give a C- to the park in it's previous condition (what I last reviewed), and a B- to tonight. Add some boxes, get a B. Put something in the middle of Stinger to fill the gap after the cannon, B+. Make the 32 urban-style, A-. Add all the other beautiful rails that I have to look at every time I take the lift, A. Doing all of this with proper placement (for example the jumps at the top of Stinger) and flow, A+. I know B- sounds harsh, but it really was a significant improvement from last week, and I definitely had a great night at Sundown tonight.

@jibgilmon,

Could you please send us a rubric identifying your point system that determined our grade?

Is there any opportunity for extra-credit before the end of the semester?

Can we contact your department head to discuss the syllabus used in this class?

Thanks!
