Ski Resorts Near Penn State

Pretty sure I'll be attending PSU next year and I'll probably want to ski a decent bit in college. Mainly looking for resorts with good parks but good all mountain terrain doesn't hurt. Obviously the 2 best resorts for park in the state are 7 springs (my home) and Big Boulder, but they're both 2 hours away so I'm looking for something closer. Tussey is real close but I've heard it's trash. Any info on Blue Knob, Roundtop, Sawmill, and Liberty would be appreciated as they seem to be the closest, but any others are appreciated as well.

blue knob is decently steep for the east, narrow groomers, and usually nothing but solid ice. the park was probably the sketchiest thing I've ever seen and the rails gave my skis tetanus. but this was like 6 years ago so maybe things got better?

roundtop used to have a great park, not sure if that's still the case.

i grew up at 7springs too. if that's what you're used to, you're probably better off making the drive. get a tussey pass for the days you don't have a lot of time

I know there's a few psu kids that ski big boulder a lot, skied there through highschool. Have skied roundtop before and the parks are dope for sure as well, but I think the drive to both is around 2 hours-ish. I'd say for 15 extra minutes in the car boulder is worth it at least on weekends when you wanna get out. As far as springs I grew up more northeast PA so don't know the drive as well but obviously parks speak for themselves.

Honestly the 2 hour drive to Springs/Boulder is worth it cause every other park in PA sucks ass. Roundtop is ok but you might as well just go to Boulder if you're driving out in that direction.

Tussey is trash it’s been my home resort for the last 5 years , and honestly it’s shit, Liberty is okay, blue knob has shit parks, round top is sick but kinda expensive, bigboulder and springs are where it’s at , about a 2ish hour drive for both tho, I’m just renting an apt this winter and getting a peak pass and skiing boulder everyweekend because I’m sick of Tussey’s shit. Also if you ever consider working at Tussey park crew are assholes who think they are better than everyone and build stupid shit, and being an instructor won’t get you payed at all, I work over 500 hours this winter and only made a little over 600$ they don’t pay and it’s illegal but no one has the balls to take them in court and I’m too young :(

Go to boulder. Then you should have access to the other peak resorts in the north east for trips. Roundtop is always fun, but the extra 30 minutes to get to boulder is worth it.

Tussey is tussey. Depending on your style of park skiing you might like it, but don't go in expecting a ton.

Ive heard blue knob is sick with fresh snow.

Talked to the homie that runs their ski and snowboard club there. I know there is a little scene there of kids that throw down, both skiers and boarders. The club is going to try to start getting more involved and start a team that competes with USCSA which is organizing body that a lot of colleges compete through. The competitions aren't crazy competitive but it's a rad way to get the school to help fund trips to all the local resorts, as well as ride with homies that you can go back and party with and split gas costs with. Check em out at your activities fair in the fall or hit me up for the kids info that runs that shit.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Now the real question is am I gonna stay skiing 7S or hit up Big Boulder more often

I love Seven Springs, and there's no place like

Home, especially with sick parks. boulder and springs are neck and neck, but If I were you I'd go to Springs

I love everything about the springs except the ownership and management. Ever since the owner bought out Hidden Valley quality went down and I feel like he's just trying to monopolize everything and make more money. Don't get me wrong I love 7S, it's my home and I've been skiing there for years but if I can save money and still ski dope parks elsewhere I probably will.

^^For example 7S charges $650 for a pass when I could get the peak pass, ski big boulder and mount snow and 5 other mountains for $400. Also 7S sells the shittiest basket of chicken and fries you will ever eat for like $13 so fuck that.

The easiest way to afford 7 Springs is by working there. Staff Cafe (2$ for a full meal that actually isn't shitty), free season pass, and a few other benefits.

But honestly if my friends didn't ski springs, and Boulder was closer, I'd just ski there.

Pretty sure a college student pass is close to 350

So true tho. Everything that's sold

Up there is overpriced. Tickets, food, even the gear at Willis. I guess they gotta make money somehow. Passes are definitely worth it tho, because IMO it's killer skiing up there.

any homies at psu that ski park? I will be a freshman at psu next year and looking for some guys to ride with. My main concern is if there is no club for park skiers or a freestyle team i won't be able to ski much freshman year because i won't have a car on campus. Any Ideas or PSU park skiers or boarders?

Don't go to blue knob. Literally didn't change the parks at all and they were real shitty. Basically 4 sketchy rails all year. They also didn't open any of their good trails this year. I'd say get the Highlands pass and just don't ski as much.

My sister goes to Penn State and she mainly skis roundtop, but she's not much for park skiing so yea. 2 hours isn't terrible, I'd go to 7 springs if I were you. Seems like most of the closer hills are pretty lame, one of the main reasons I decided not to go there hah

I'm deciding between PSU and WVU rn, if I go to state we should get some laps in together. Hopefully there's a club that can bus us to boulder or springs bc I won't have a car either lol

Im deff down to get some hot laps come to state my dude

Liberty last season was the best it's been in 4 yrs imo. Obviously not as nice as springs but they had a good variety of features for all levels and ok jumps. Its mostly well maintained and has a jbar so you dont have to hike/lap the lift for the most part (i heard they might replace it for next season though).

Yo I'm a freshman right now at Penn State and I joined the ski team on campus. It's pretty dope we ski at tussey Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tussey is pretty shitty but it's 10 minutes from campus and they at least have a park so it's not too bad. Then each week during this semester we would compete at different mountains against schools like navy and Pitt. We went to sawmill, elk, wisp, seven springs and if you qualify for nationals (which I did easily and I'm a shitty skier) then you got to go lake placid to compete and I heard that nationals are at aspen next year

I usually take the bus to tussey if I can't find a ride from someone on the team. It's only $2 to take it and sometimes they run an express bus right to tussey during the week. I also will have my car next year so if you ever need a ride just hit me up I'm always looking for people to shred with at tussey

their lift ticket prices are fucked. Isn't their peak rate like 85 or 93$/day or something? I paid less per day at fucking Brighton in Utah.I never go to springs except for mashed potato. Also we get raped on tolls on the way in from Ohio

Yeah on a holiday it’s like 93. They were charging 85 bucks this past weekend for 10 trails, 3 lifts, and 20 some features. Absolutely ridiculous. The people who don’t have passes are getting ripped off horribly. And the people who do have passes aren’t getting off the hook either because they’re not cheap. And yeah PA turnpike tolls are absolutely ridiculous, I’m just glad I don’t have to take the turnpike since I’m only 40 mins away, it’s all backroad.

For everyone here. On Monday's in march if you have a season pass anywhere you can go to 7 springs for free. Feel free to call them to make sure but that is basically the only time I got to springs.

This^^^ did this all the time as a kid when I didn’t have a pass at springs. I’m pretty sure they still do it but it’s something that literally nobody knows about and they give absolutely no information about it on their website or anything.

Nah Blue is still like that.

I’m the terrain park manager at tussey and I have grown up skiing here. Tussey is pretty decent all things considered, we are a small hill 10 minutes from campus, and have dumped a pile of money into a new snow making lines, pumps and guns. If you check out the specials we have for lift tickets it’s pretty affordable.

MONDAY- buy one get one half day or full day lift tickets for college students

TUESDAY- 7-10pm lift tickets for $15

WEDNESDAY- 12-2pm tickets are half price

THURSDAY- 4-10pm tickets for $25

SATURDAY- 7-10pm tickets for $25

EVERYDAY- $2 off with a college ID on regular priced tickets

As far as terrain parks go we try our best to keep things progressive and dynamic. We mostly set up intermediate features with a few advanced options. This year we bought 8 new beginner rails/boxes. The conditions aren’t always prime due to the weather, we have been battling the rain this season. Over all if you don’t mind there being no lift lines unless it’s a powder day then you should have a good time here or at least it’s worth a try if you don’t have time to drive to a bigger mountain. Aye this guy's really good and knows what he is talking about. I see him there every time I'm at tussey and even sat beside him on the lift a couple times lmfao

With prices like that, as long as there are a few decent rails and a jump big enough to flip and cork on I will probably ski Tussey most of the time. Thank you

The jumps are usually pretty small kinda like the santas beard jumps at springs, but there are always lots of fun rails and corrugated pipes

They did have a couple bigger jumps ealier this season but they were kinda weird

I would say do Tussey for random days/night skiing and then make the trek to Springs when you can.
