ski halfpipe should NOT be in the olympics

although it would be good for exposure of the sport... look what it did to snowboarding. snowboarding used to be cool and about style and now everything is so technical and about points in the olympics. let the snowboarders have this one, i say, we still have freedom in the sport. remember what FIS did to skiing's freestyle events? well, if the olympics got their hands on skiing halfpipe it may end up that way... only WORSE!

wow good timing, i'm writing my final paper about this issue...personally i think it has potential to be both good and bad...but like you said it's all about tech and shit in the olympics, they still do there own thing in every other event...i'm mixed about it...input please

skiing is for little fat kids

dude... whatever happens to the sport... i will always ski.. i will always have fun .. it is always about i and if its not you should question what you are doing because your not doing it for yourself

When worst comes to worst skiing comes first.

oh i think the sport is all about fun too. but in terms of comps i think it should still have something to do with style. regarding the boarders, oh they have style... BUT a hucked 10 would beat a slow huge 7 any day in the olympics. and i just think that's not a good direction for ANY sport to head in. but that is just my opinion.

an upright ballerina 9 does not look good, but it got dude the gold in snowboarding. tech may be 'absolute' a nine is a nine is a nine, but does that mean its the right direction for judging?

I don't know too much about the FIS but i know they have been TRAINING jib skiers since before the 2002 olympics. I bet if skiing were to be in the olympics they would probably look at it like a mogul competition, what i'm trying to say is they would be run differently than the snowboard comp, more like an ariels. I think they(the people of the olympics) are willing to accept newschool skiing yet.

i think htat Skiing Halfpipe should be in the Olympics. you say that snowboarding has evolved to be judged more on technical tricks than style. The judges in FIS are for Amplitude, Spins, Mandatory tricks(straight airs), STYLE, and overall. all are scored on a scale of 10 to add up to a perfect score of 50. so style is TECHNICALLY just as important as tech tricks.

The olympics gave Snowboarding huge exposure and I'm sure in the end brought in loads of money to help progress the sport. Even if the Olympics is directed more towards technical tricks, there will always still be other yearly events like the X Games, WSI, Red Bull Big Air, and other events like those.

And really, just ski however you want, even if in 20 years skiing has made a turn for the worse and every mountain goes bankrupt and stops running, all that means is nobody around to steal first tracks, or you can build BC booters all over the place. thats what happened to a mountain near me, this year we're just gonna hike it and ski powder and build jumps all the time without any restrictions.

As for the drug thing....what does it matter? What would drugs do to help you? If anything the herb slows you down because it gets into your lungs....but like....theres nothing really you can take......ok steroids you would have more endurance but still.....there are like no drugs you can take....

yea but you cant say that the xgames is all about style either tho. There is a lot of hucking done in all ski competitions including mike wilsons 'wilson flip' and the shit that Tj Schiller does is hucked as well its just that his looks nicer than everyone elses. So it could swing either way with skiers half pipe in the olympics.

drugs matter because the fis tese for them, and if you test positive for them you cant compete, so if you smoke you could get thrown out.

i dont think that waht the question was, i think it was 'why should testing positive for smoking pot matter?' because smoking pot doesnt enhance your skiing skills, if anything it would diminish them casue your reactions are slower, depth perception is off, and your judgment is impaired.

actually i think the question was should ski halfpipe be in the olympics....

ski halfpipe should be in the olympics. more people would realize that trick skiing is more popular than most people realize.

doing a girl from wonder lake is like throwing a hot dog down a hallway.

pot can mask the signs of other enhancing drugs. that is why it is not allowed. an athlete could claim that he only smoked pot, when he has being taking all sorts of drugs. same reason why many painkillers arn't allowed either.

i'm not too sure what i want, it'd be realy cool if it was done right, but i for one would still value an X-Games Gold Medal or a US Freeskiing Open Gold over an Olympic Gold, becuase i know those events are put together, judged, and are heading in the right direction. I don't think it would hurt to try for ski superpipe in the olympics, but if it goes in, we need the right people organizing it, people who have been down since the begining and people who know how to ride and judge pipe. Like Phil Belanger, Josh Loubek, David Creighton, CR Johnson, Jon Ollson. They know what tricks are hardest to do, and how difficult it may be to pull them off and still make them look good, i think the ratio mentioned above, 10 for amplitude, 10 for style, 10 for difficulty, 10 for 'manditory tricks', 10 for overall would work. if they got rid of that 'manditory air/tricks' thhing and gave those 10 points to overall, cause what makes a pipe run great isn't the hige 1080 you throw on the last hit, but the cork 5s, ally-ops, 900s, flairs, flatspins, and 7s you throw before it all mixed together.

thats just what i think though...

1 straight air

so everything would have to be super sick

idk

im undecided, i have a while to think about it

ross rebagliatti, the first snowboarder ever to win a gold medal, got busted so it kinda left a generalization for snowboarders...its not a performance enhancing drug, but an illeagal one...he still got his medal though....

dude its just one competition and who cares what they judge on its still gonna be great for the sport, and its not gonna change anything about skiing except exposure of it

it'd be be funny if all the skiers would be smokin pot in the background of the tv. Thats probably something that some of the pros would do too

i don't think it should be and we should take snowboard halfpipe out of the olympics, save the olympics for the amutear athlete although hockey and basketball both have pro athletes now, can you really compare an typical olympic athletes training to the training that Tanner does. Save our sport for the X games but lets make X games bigger like the extreme version of the olympics, i would to see the X games progress into something bigger and take skiing and snowboarding with it

^^^^ What is snowboarding today? The same athletes that were killing it in the Winter games were the leading contenders at X as well.

Athletes that are driven to compete at the Olympic level of competition are probably not well-understood or represented here on NS.com. I hope to see skiing halfpipe in 2010. I believe the caliber will be well beyond anything we know today. Look at how far the 12-14 year olds have come already? T. Hall won't be competitive in 6 years, IMHO. It'll be Sean Pettit's generation that'll represent.

And who the hell knows what will be considered stylish and technical by then, anyway?

^this is true. I think it would be a good step of skiing, but at the same time we gotta concentrate on just keepin it real at the same time

I was fortunate enough to be able to compete in the Olympics (Salt Lake, moguls), and it was without a doubt the most incredible experience of my life! Yes, I had issues with FIS and judging and (at the time) not being allowed to invert etc. but these negatives were completely overwhelmed by the positive experience of being part of the worlds most elite, high profile sporting event in existence. No pro event I've ever attended or seen even comes remotely close. While the big pro events like the X-Games, US Open etc. are well known and respected within the ski industry (with good reason), there are millions of people in the world who have never heard of them. However you could travel to the farthest corners of the Earth and be hard pressed to find anyone who does not know of the Olympics, or hold the athletes that compete there in the highest respect. I turned down a spot in the X-Games because I was focused on qualifying for the Olympics and I consider it totally worth it. I think that that people like Tanner who have worked so hard to bring ski halfpipe to the level it is at today deserve a chance to showcase their talents at an Olympic Games, and go through the amazing, unforgettable experience of being an Olympian. Those that don't agree are free to boycott just like Terje did in snowboarding, and that decision should be respected as well. The Olympics didn't hurt Terje or his career, and it will not hurt the pro side of Halfpipe skiing either. I can guarantee that anyone who does go will have the experience of a lifetime.

Why does it have to be in the olympics man?? Skiing is about going out on the hill and having fun and chilling with your friends its not about competition. Let faggots like Jonny Moseley be in the olympics and let the stylish skiers ski for fun, We already have the XGames and the US Open. Besides if skiing gets too exposed it will become a sell-out sport like snowboarding is right now and i doubt any of you want that.

I support olympic half pipe for skiers, as long as the FIS doesn't get too involved and they add skier cross too.

oh wait the FIS fucks up everything... so it would never work out. None of the athletes would pass their dirty drug tests.

All I can say is that Canada would win.

In the Olympics, Dumont's X-Games run would place him nowhere near the top, as amplitude would not have nearly as much say. The straight air factor would eliminate Olenick from contention, and drug testing would keep Tanner out. CR is still a halfpipe pussy since he decked out in 2003, so that would eliminate the US team right there.

It would be Crichton, Belanger, and Vanular sweeping the podium for Canada.

PS, females would need to step up halfpipe skiing dramatically, because if it was to be an event, there would be a female side to it as well, just like in snowboarding. And I'm sorry, but female halfpipe skiers just don't cut it.

YOu cant have the olymipcs without fis. Ya i think it would be good exposure for the sport, but it would ruin it. Freeskiing needs to stay freeskiing. Fis makes you have to call your run before hand, look what it did to other parts of skiing like mogul skiing. Mogul skiing was like a revolutioin of skiing in its day, they were rebels from racing, were getting air, and could do whatevver the hell they wanted, when they joined the olympics it got stupid and stopped progressing, look at thee olympics now, it took soo long to be able to go inverted

.......... AK REPRESENT

well i did think that it should be, but ive changed my mind. Skiings so cool right now all rider driven with newschool companies and photoshoot comps. We dont need more goddamn publicity, i like it how it is now, progressing fast, and impressing the masses. screw an olympic event, do we care? the only people it'd reach more is the people who dont ski and fuck them

If I had more energy, I'd burn that young mans face
