Ski bum questions

I plan to get a pass to snow and stratton, and really want to get the full use out of my pass. So I'm gonna try to go to Snow on saturdays and Stratton on sundays. I would be sleeping in my car, but don't really have any idea to park it. NE ski bums ideas?

The parking lot at the mountain? A Wal-Mart? Ill give you a 1/3 if a ski bum bc your only asking wknds, which ski bums know the wknds are the worst days to ski. That said, you get a 1/3 credit for effort for sleeping in your car.

truck camper would be money, I forget who, but one pro was selling his in salt lake for something like only $200.

Dude fuck Snow and Stratton if you're planning on bumming it. Waaaaaaaaay too expensive.

Buy a touring setup and get MAYBE one pass to a hill that has a good park if that's your thing.

The pass im getting is 345 for an everyday pass to straton and mt. snow. which are also only 20 miles apart I just want to see if there is any tips and tricks and maybb somewhere where I could park haha

Short term car camping is the best. All of the benefits, few drawbacks. I'd advise you to:

Bring two pairs of socks, long underwear, ect. Nothing worse than cold stuff you used the day before

Try to find somewhere to dry out your boot liners and mitts- hand driers in lodges do the trick.

Have your mom (be thankful you still have her to rely on) make you a few sandwiches for lunch. If you have a camping stove (if not, look up coke can alcohol stoves, super easy to make), I'd do spaghetti-os in a can for dinner, and oatmeal for breakfast. Cheap, easy, and quick.

The worst part is going to be finding something to do from 4 (when the mountain closes)-9ish (when you want to go to bed). Try to make some friends places that you can go to and hang out (less likely if you're still in HS) or load up an ipod with podcasts, bring a headlamp and a book, ect. Alternatively, find a coffeeshop with free wifi, grab a cheap drink and browse NS/whatever.

Good Luck!

I have had good luck hanging in the lodge after skiing and chatting with employees, they usually have a microwave, it is heated, and if you are nice people might offer you a place to stay. (happened to me) otherwise, stay warm and bring a book, sleeping in my car in the parking lot opening weekend was one of the most fun things I have done in a while. I actually wrote a news story with pictures on it, haha https://www.newschoolers.com/readnews/43778/Wolves-and-Rails--Opening-Weekend-in-North-Idaho?c=latest&o=2&page=1 I am not super experienced but feel free to hit me with any questions.

then you arent really ski bumming. you are no more than trying to glorify sleeping in your car on the weekends so you can ski longer and save gas money

Noone in their right mind would go through the effort of touring in southern VT instead of dropping the 350 it costs this kid being a teenager.

Sounds like this kid works hard and wants to spend his weekends on the mountains and can afford a pass but no hotel room. He should go for it camping in the car won't be as bad if its only for 1-2 nights at a time. If he owns his car he should trade it in for something comfortable to sleep in any station wagon or suv without back seats will do the trick.

OP- an alternative option is to offer heads on here and/pr anyone you meet money for some floor space. Bring an air mattress and you are good to go.

Yep, I'm in basically the same situation but in college, just go for it, buy a lot of cup of noodles, bring some blankets and you will be fine, I am loving it so far!

Im gonna be doing the same thing. I got the double down pass and am going to spend a few nights in my car this year. Maybe i will see you in the parking lot, haha.

You can get it for that price until you're 26, I know you're older but still 18-26 is a solid age range for that price

Most Wal Marts are free overnight parking so if there's one near the hills you're good. THe downside is some is only for RV's and bigger vehicles. I've been kicked out of a few for camping in cars. It's not hard to find a place to park though, just find some back area around a building. But first things first is find out if your mountain allows it. Most resorts where I've been are down with it you just have to be respectful.

I remember reading Alex Martini say somewhere his tips on staying warm through the night and stuff. He says to get the AC going until you're really nice and toasty (car running, can't risk the battery) then shut it off and hit the hay. You'll wake up from being cold more than halfway through the night so at this time turn your car on and let it run with the AC and fall asleep again. It's just idling that's the problem for the outside so it will vary on where to park using this method. But it works wonders, hardly uses any gas either. As for recreation bring a laptop if you have one, some movies pre-loaded and all that jazz.

To get really into the rhythm of car camping it's all trial and error, your first few days will be a learning experience but once you've got the gist of what you want and your own methods it becomes so much fun. Super comfy once you get the perfect set-up and nothing beats being first person at the hill.

there aren't any wal-marts (that i know of) in the stratton/snow area. i know there is one an hour and a half south in troy (near albany), and i think there is one in rutland about 45 minutes north but thats about it.

Isnt west dover full of places to park? I mean i could be wrong but there were a bunch of churches to my memory. Just chill out in one of those parking lots. Perfect way to bum around

I went to college just outside of Albany, NY and spent a lot of time in southern vt including Stratton and Mt Snow before I started doing some NE touring, Unfortunately your not going to find any "big box" stores in southern vt except for in rutland. Maybe consider a killington pass? Otherwise I would just befriend a local business owner and ask if you can park in their lot.
