Ski boots and y they should take a tip from snowboarding.

alright so while flipping thru a transworld snowboard magazine i see many ads for various snowboard boots companies and what not. they're boots are so much more advanced then ours. adjustable air pockets (just like the reeboks back in the day!) super light technology and some other cool stuff. so y hasn't our ski boot companies taken notice and followed suit? i know i could use a nice air pocket in my boots cuz i tighten my buckles and like an hour or 2 later from jumping they packed out a lil from the days riding so it would be handy to be able to pump up the air and get some support back. anyone else have any opinions on this?

yea. i think we should maybe start looking at anew boot design, but the problem is that in orfer to really change our boots we need to change our bindings, and i don't want to do that. I just think it be hard to chnge em.

well snowboaders are fags and walk in their boots we just put them in the bindings, my boots fit my feet and dont bother me so i just set them the same way every time and i dont see why our boots need to be like snowboard boots

 
first of all, you have to take into account the differences in sking and snowboarding. we rely on our boots way more than snowboarders do for control. and having an inflatable pocket of air doesnt mean their boots are sooo much more advanced than ski boots. if you actually look at the tech specs of ski boots you'll see they're much more complex than snowboard boots. high end boots have different plastics that have different flex in different locations of the boot to give maximum stiffness in one area, and then allow perfect flex in another area of the boot.

and if you think about it, pumping air into your boot really wouldnt be that much more conveinient than just rebuckling your boots.

i agree that we need a new boot design. I'm maybe leaning more towards the soft boots that have been coming out because if you can design a boot that is comfortable getting into, wearing and getting out of and still delivers good support and keeps your feet warm then youve got a sick boot. lets face it getting in and out of boots isnt painful, but it can get annyoing.

Half you guys a dumb enough to say that snowboarders are fags..they arent fags..we got freestyle skiing from them, i ride with snowboarders and they are fun to ride with. But we should still keep the same boot design..they work for me.

we need a whole new fucking mounting sytem too. all bindings should have identicle mounting patterns. and skis should have mounts on them like the forum snowboards do. little inserts that slide on tracks so you can adjust them and then tighten them down.

maybe if you want to play around in the park all day that would be a good option, but if you want to step it up and actually ski, then im gunna say the plastic shell is here to stay.

i think itd be pretty dope if some skate companies that make snowboard boots make ski boots as well. Id buy some vans ski boots or some dc shoe ski boots if they made em.

 
yeah because DC's skateboard shoes knowledge will cross over REALLY well to ski boots....

if you think about it, ski boots are a thousand times more advanced than snowboard boots. they have a HARD PLASTIC shell and are still hardly less comfy

if you want to ski hard you need solid boots. and as for getting free-skiing from snowboarders - i'd say that pretty much accurate. it existed before, yes. but snowboarding really embaressed skiing into the 20th century.

lets set things straight. our current boots are great, they do EXACTLY what we need them to do. the air pocket idea may sound good, but when it comes down to it, you would loose so much control from having a bubble of air supporting your leg. boot companies pay engineers for a reason to design their boots, they know what forces are exerted on the boot, and how the boot should react to such forces to deliver maximum control to the ski.

and whoever said they need to design boots that are comfortable to get into, wear, get out of and keep your feet warm, what kind of boots do you have? i wouldnt call getting into and out of my boots super enjoyable, but its not uncomfortable by any means. and if you get good boots, and get the liner molded to your foot, then they're as comfortable as a ski boot is giong to get, considering the plastic shell.

and 4skizzle, i think D_spinner meant that snowboarding influenced freestyle skiing. we did get the rodeo and other tricks from snowboarding after all. in pretty much every interview with a pro skier, they say that they were influenced by snowboarder friends that they rode with.

have any of you guys been snowboarding? snowboarding boots SUCK. The snowboarders i ride with are always complaining that their feet hurt, they are falling asleep. They are constantly adjusting their bindings and boots and their stuff always breaks. They buy really good stuff too, snowboard stuff still has a ways to go before its in the same category as skiing equipment.

 
my ex gf's dc boots had a gel pad in the toes so it didnt hurt when you slammed your toes into the end of the boot.....and for those of you who don't think snowboard boots have influenced ski boots, look at salomons line of softer boots, which have big pull laces just like snowboard boots do

I know what he meant but it's how he said it. Besides you can't really argue effectively that we got enough from snowboarding to even say that free skiing was 'influanced' by it, much less 'we got it from them'. There are a few parallels but not enough to make that connection.

first of all, no ski can handle a snowboard-style boot, because the sole is too wide and you wouldn't be able to lay over your skis at all without booting out and eating shit. Also, if you don't like your ski boots, try a different one! different companies cater to different types of feet, so DEMO!!!

the liner issue has been addressed, between heat moldable/breathable liners...they exist, their just aftermarket

skiing and snowboarding footwear are polar opposites...all of our force is going in generally a FORWARD direction...if we had a floppy donkey dick snowboard boot, we could crumple forward. Snowboarding leg forces go back and forth laterally and less force is needed for the transfer of weight over edges

imagine jumping in a snowboard style boot, u could break ankles

I hate snowboard boots, they are so unstable. It feels like you're going to fall out of them even if they are tied at their tightest. I like ski boots the way they are now because your foot is secure in the boot, not moving around like in a sneaker. And I agree with the person who said they are for skiing not for walking around in the lodge.

 
For skiing, you need to have stiffness, you would have absolutly no control if you had soft boots, period,

hey i said 'that delivers support as well' somebody should look into current designs and try to remove plastic from areas its really not needed cuz im guessing you dont need a total shell of plastic around your foot, but maybe im wrong.

i would also like to see boots geared more towards newschool. nowadays skis are becoming more and more center mounted in the newschool world. your boots are tilted forward so you're automatically putting more weight out in front of you which is fine if you have normal skis. It just seems logical to me that when your riding a ski with almost as much tail as tip you dont wanna be leaning forward so much.

ski boots are hard for a reason, so you can control your skis. The stiffness of the boot alows you to transfer your energy from you, to your boot, to your binding and thus your ski, with a soft boot, you lost a ton of control. try skiing technical stuff with your buckles ripped off, thats what it would be like if you had nice soft snowboard boots... and besides who really hates their boots? im as comfortable in mine as in shoes

I just think ski boots should have more padding in the toes. I lost a toenail this year from slamming my toes into the ends of the boots.

You still want to be leaning forward just as much as traditional skis. Skiing in the backseat reduces your control over your skis big time because it is the pressure on your tips that stabalizes you as you ride.

Salomon are starting to make some soft boots. We had some demo rental ones last year in NSW, Oz, I think they were verses. They were basically mountaineering bots, soft toe and heel pieces, lace up boots, and one ankle buckle. They would only fit certain size skis depending on boot size ie 23.5-25.5= a 145 ski, 26.5-27.5 a 155 ski, and 28.5-29.5 a 165 ski. I tried them and the skis were way too short, too soft, and generally sucky. But it was an interesting boot though, made for someone who is going to spend just as much time on the green groomers as they do in the pub, knocking back gin and tonic.

I have the 1080 boot, comfortable enough for a little bit of walking and stiff enough for steep powder skiing so everything works out with it.

The verse is the worst boot ever. Biggest POS I have seen Salomon make in a long time. If all you do is sit on your ass in the park, dont even ride the park, then the boot would be alright I guess, other than that, whats the point in it.
