Skateboarding is overrated

Let me start this off by saying that skating is extremely technically difficult and the people who can do it well are skilled athletes. That being said, I find it completely unimpressive to watch. The airs and rails are so small in comparison to other sports, and even though I know it's really hard to flip a little piece of wood around with your feet I dont care at all if someone can do it. I love watching snowboarding, FMX, BMX, wakeboarding, and all kinds of sports I don't actually do, but skating to me is boring. I think it's beacuse pushing yourself around on little plastic wheels dosn't have the same feeling of speed and freedom as cruising down a mountain or riding a bike. And riding a skateboard for transportation is ridiculously unpractical in comparison to a bike or even blades. For these reasons I find it kind of surprising that skating is the popular public image of extreme sports, and dissapointing since I think most action sports are much cooler. For those of you who love to skate, keep having fun. That's just my opinion.

well at least you understand that its incredibly challenging so im not gonna flip at you but how can you say doing 20 stair handrails and ledges isnt funa nd exciting to watch when you know how hard it is

you understand how good a skater is when u actualy can skate, and i think even tho kick flip over a 8 stair doesnt seem that big, its alot harder than doing a 360 over a 50 ft table

really, if it wasn't for skating. snowboarding wouldn't have gotten into rails and shit. then skiing wouldn't have gotten into that shit either.

I can't do any tech tricks on a skateboard, but skating is fucking hardcore and the concequences hurt more than landing on snow. Respect skateboarding

this is the gayest post someone could ever think to write. if you don't skate then why do you give a shit? it is difficult for most people to just stand on a skateboard, so i would consider good skateboarding more of an art form. just because you can't draw does that mean that picasso sucks at painting? just because you can't make music does that mean you don't listen to it? go rollerblading and stop skiing because i don't want to have anything to do with someone as retarded as you

 
well im really glad you shared you opinion with us, thinking that it'd start some sort of fight? i dont kno but thats cool that you think this way and find skating boring, i really couldnt care less, but i must say you really cant compare the sports because they are completely different, and doing a basic skiing or snowboarding trick on a huge jump or rail is pretty damn easy, sure it looks nicer, but to me its all about what actually requires more skill that will stick out further than anything, and ive done all 3 "extreme sports" in my life that i feel i can say my opinion is reasonable.

i used to skate board. it is still fun to watch. i would rather watch skateboarding over some other sports. rollerblading is just getting out of control. but still fun to watch the ridiculus (sp?) flips

hey man, its cool you feel like that, and i used to agree... i thought skating was freakin easy when i was in 5th grade and rollerbladed a bit.

but when i started, i quickly forgot about it being easy. its not easy at all, it takes a lot of practice and slamming.

granted, the average skater cannot do "as much" as the average mountain biker or rollerblader, in terms of size and tricks, but, i mean, if you look at the pros in the discipline, you cannot tell me they do not go big. Jamie Thomas, Cole, Reynolds all go HUGE, and if you enter Danny way into it, well, nuff said.

however, i dissagree with many of your points:

i do not agree at all. if you look at, say, the new zero video, you have rails that are about 20 stairs long, and Hubbas at chest level. Also, see danny way for airs.

well, the wheels are made out of eurethane. i know it sounds anal, but still, they are not plastic wheels. they are the same wheels as rollerbladers use, just different shape. and for the feeling of freedom and speed, well, i guess you have to have experienced it, but speed wobbles bombing a hill is pretty exhilirating, and you are in a lot less control than on a mountain bike; and really, just carving a hill on smooth asphalt is out of this world in sensation.

i dissagree because: a bike is good for transport over long distances, but you can't take em on the subway, or on a train, and are not usually allowed in pedestrian areas, and maybe most limiting is locking it up or finding a place to park it if you are going into a store. As for blades, they become impractical if you need to up stairs, down stairs, or for going into a store, and you have to bring extra shoes if you need to take them off.

but thats all good dude if you don't like skating.

haha i like how you listed wakeboarding as being cooler than skateboarding. It's falling on cement stairs vs. water, snow, dirt. Skateboarders slide just as big of rails as skiers and snowboarders do. They do just as big of drops. I think you have been watching some lame ass skate movies.

yeah its actually not anywhere close to that. yes theyre all variations on one and other but none of them look exactly the same. thats saying a popshove it (board does a 180 beneath you) is the same as a nollie backside heelflip(pop off the nose turn behind you and flip the board out with your heel). how does that make any sense.

I'd have to agree with Bob on this one, it's just like Urban jibbing, yeah its technical but so what it's not fun to watch and its pretty gay to do aswell. I'd rather make turns down a green circle than "jib a handrail" It's like whats the point you hop on a rail and don't move, thats not skiing at all.

yeah skating isnt as fast and you dont go as big (in most places) but its s omuch more technical than skiing in ever aspect.

one example is just doing a plain rail even just a foot high: on skis al you have t odo is jump turn and slide it but on skating you have to ollie (which i find real hard just to ollie half a foot with out moving cause i dont really skate) if youve ever tried ollies its definitely so much hard than it looks and then you have to do the rail and there are so many different ways to slide it and some are so much harder than others.

thats just one way to show that skating is definitely not overrated. if you want to see big air and speed than watch danny way gap the wall of china

 
more technical? I dunno skiing lines is pretty fuckign technical for many aspects. You have to pay attention to what slough is doing, what aspects are windblown, sunny, shady, avoiding rocks, elevation, trees, if you fall in the middle of your run your prolly gonna get broke, there's a lot more too it then sliding rails

yeah im definitely not saying skiing isnt technical i mean imfrom the east and dont deal with slough and such but you can definitely easily die while skiing which isnt so much of a risk while skating cause skating doesnt deal with dodging trees going real fast im just saying skating's tricks are a lot more technical than most of skiings
