Sick trippy griptape art

Oh and just to touch on this you are a pretentious dick because you think you're better than people just because you're a fucking art major. Let me just re-quote you here...
"i could make that for that. you are not a starving artist. you are just some kid with an exacto knife and a paint pen.
we can talk philosophy of art and you can probably defend that it is art.but we could not talk gestalt principles, composition and basic 2d layout without me puking in my mouth a little."
Okay... I'm the pretentious one because a guy with money wanted to buy a board from me, and he asked how much so I told him 1500, and he talked me down to about 1100. That's called business. That is also called hard earned money. He saw my stuff and said "fuck I would spend good money on that"... so he did. Read a dictionary learn the definition of pretentious.
You my friend are an unintelligent turd, go jack off to some Basquiat while listening to The Velvet Underground and keep telling yourself you're better than everyone else.

assumptions =/= fact

and a 3rd year industrial design major who doesn't have work in MOMA must be shit. even if i was this isn't me vs you. its art market vs. your pretentious overcharging

and i assume you're a kind person, i never said anything contradictory to that. i still think your price is indicative of pretentiousness in one scenario, not of a lack of kindness. buy hey, your ethics, not mine.

and i will stand by my argument about the art major and his critcs vs. the engineer and his opponents. but that must be my immature mind failing to make logical connections

its a pretty basic business principle that you charge whatever people are willing to pay. i dont know about you, but i think making more money is better than making less money.

Well then, what the fuck exactly is your problem?

It it due to the fact the he did not follow the gestalt principles? The fact that he made some cash off of it? Are you just angry and bitter? The dude creates some work, that does take time, skill, and some artistic talent and you decide to shit on it... for what exact reason?

Was it that his work isn't necessarily conveying a clear message to you? Because that I could understand.

Passed by reading this thread a few times. Only looked at pics, comments didn't matter to me. Your talented as fuck, Nice work

Okay so what your saying is you're mad I make the money I do off the art I make...
You literally just made yourself look like the biggest, most jealous, piece of garbage ever. I am literally laughing out loud right now. You are a sad person. I will not apologize for the money I make, you are a little fecal bead dangling from the ass hair of orangutan.
"that must be my immature mind failing to make logical connections"
Couldn't have said it better myself. I believe this discourse has commenced, kindly leave.

actually you are right to a degree. i guess im off base. you should raise your prices as that in effect raises prices of all art. and that is, to most people, good business.

some people feel they should get as much money as possible, others feel they should get the appropriate amount. i do believe i stepped over the line. in my defense you publicized it, but your financial agreement was between you and your customer. my apologies.

i would like to reapproach this with some more calmness.

do you not understand what im saying about the engineering major or physicist or whatever other major?

and your jealousy argument is just not close to right as in the past year i won a pair of rossi s7's for the carved pumpkin in my icon(and my pictures(i dont consider it art)). i was offered $1000 for a chair i made for a project made from cardboard, old books and elmer's glue but felt bad selling in case it would fall apart, as my girlfriend and i made it in one night and intended it to be a design prototype not an art piece. and have received numerous generous offers on the self portrait i have in my pictures, but im reworking it as the left side of the jacket looks like shit.

now shall we discuss?

uhhhh kinda to the first and last one, i guess? theres more than gestalt and its not that its not conveying a message either. and i like the style that hes working towards but I will repeat that there is a degree of objectivity. if you want me to attempt to start to explain it you can pm me.

i dont understand the difference between 'this is sick, im gonna make a thread in the wrong place, im the only one who can do this' and 'i could do things like this too, i dont like it, but lets discuss' (admittedly more like an asshole though)

Well I don't have much of an opinion regarding that. I agree to an extent about your ability to argue fine art and artistic aspects better than the average joe who took art classes in high school. To people like pbandj and myself I think it's safe to say we are pretty well versed in non performing arts. So if a person is relatively well versed in engineering but not an engineering major could hold his ground in a discussion/argument about the topic. I we didn't know anything about art and were spouting off bullshit then yes I absolutely agree, that is just not the case.
And as for your pumpkin. (technically it is art) but yeah you don't consider it art and it won you skis. Cool, congrats, that's pretty damn cool.
You got offered 1000 dollars for a product you didn't have faith in. Okay you didn't want it breaking in a week and would feel bad to take a grand. Okay I understand completely. You are receiving offers for a self portrait. Okay again cool, congrats, but you don;t want to sell it because you're not happy with it. So perhaps the jealousy thing is crossing the line a tad... But even with that being said. I'm selling a product, pieces of art (whether they are or are not art in your eyes that is your opinion, in my eyes and to the eyes of the people buying them they are pieces of art) I believe in the quality of my work so I wouldn't feel bad for selling them for a grand, and like you I don't sell them until I feel they are to my standards of quality.
Soooo what's your point?

You don't necessarily like my pieces or think my pieces are technically challenging therefore I shouldn't be paid well for them... I mean that is all I can honestly come up with and that is a pretty weak argument.
Some people will say I don't get Pollock I think it's ugly, fuck that shit, fuck Pollock, I could do the same thing he does ( I am not comparing myself to Pollock but for example purposes we will continue)
Okay so that dude fucking hates Pollock thinks his work is shit and is garbage. But other people find it to be amazing as fuck and will drop countless millions of dollars to get pieces of his. However it's just fucking splatter paint.
So you don't like my work, you don't think it's worth a grand. Well hey, another guy thought it was. Other people pay good money on them as well. The only board I haven't sold was the first one in this thread and it's because I made it for myself.
I have sold everyone I have ever made and the prices may not fit what you think they are worth but other people saw them and were like hey I like that I want it how much? Okay.

the pollock argument is a great argument. its been had a million times and will always be had. the answer is never conclusive.

which i guess is only half of my argument.

the other half which i have poorly expressed should have been simply summarized in my first post instead of almost everything else...

https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/576601/

my thing is that there is a bunch of work in there better than both yours and mine that doesn't get recognition. i was offput by the label you placed on your thread as if it was more important and "sicker" than the work in the m&a thread.

the argument is a little bigger than that but on an NS scale thats all i have to disagree with. glad we can agree to agree and also agree to disagree.

also a fun anecdote about pollock, whether it be true or just myth, i like it...

some guy came in his house to see his work as he painted. pollock was using a brush that was pretty thin with bristles like 7 or 8 inches long. so this guy comes in saying how his 5 year old son could make it and the general pollock critique bs and he goes to leave. as he reaches for the door, Pollock flicks a glob of paint of his brush from across the room and lands it on the doorknob.

sounds like such bs but i wanna believe it haha.

growing good pot is an artform, but if you smoke it by the ounce, are you truely appreciating it... thank you and I bid you good night

just stop giving a fuck, why does it even matter to you its not like your buying the boards.

personally i think its sick

dude these are tight, i like the look they have before the pastels, but thats just my opinion because it seems more like a board and less like a painting, which excites me. i understand that you want it to look different than that though, anyways nice job and keep it up

You have some seriously sick tallent! I think i like the longboard before you colored it but the skate deck coloring was super sick! Threads to see what the new one will look like, i like the theme

I mean usually I don't agree with your posts but, you are oh so very right in this situation. Mr. Art Major needs to grow the fuck up and just realize your trying to share your artwork, which is awesome.

I wonder if he noticed hes the only person in the thread hating?

Dam this thread turned into a shit storm and I didn't even see it brewing until now. Wish I was here earlier to back you up Jake, even though it seems as if you put this art major idiot in his place. I was reading the last couple pages and this guy is about as moronic as one can get. What I basically got from his argument was that he is an artist who wont sell his work for some reason that violates his ethics despite the numerous offers he's gotten. Just a little bit of advice for this guy if you're reading this, but the next someone offers you money for what you made, you should probably take it regardless about how you "feel" about it. Im guessing that this guy offered you give or take a hundred bucks for you're chairs (feel free to correct me if Im wrong). Now you're unethical feelings about selling you're work would be understandable if you were a guy who sold chairs for a living but you don't. You're problem is that you're an inspiring artist with the mentality of a chair salesman, which in turn will get you no where as an artist because a successful artist for example, sells what is nothing but a porcelain toilet for 1.7 million dollars.
I mean I assume you are an art major because you want to make a career out of being an artist right? If thats the case than I can tell you right now that you're not gonna make it in the art world if you don't change your current mentality. Do you think that the person that sold Marcel Duchamps Fountain felt bad for selling someone a toilet for $1.7 million? No of course that person didn't because he just sold a fucking toilet that probably costs a couple dollars, for fucking almost TWO FUCKING MILLION DOLLARS!!! I can already tell that you know nothing about art history (which is surprising cause you'd think an art major would) because if you did than you'd know that these kind of things have been happening for about 100 years.
Now the question of if this ridiculous form of art (IMO) deserves that hefty price tag is something we could debate all day long, but in the end it would be useless because the fact of the matter is that it happens and it will continue to happen as long as people are drawn towards contemporary and conceptual art. Seeing as how conceptual art really isn't on the decline, you may want to try and take advantage of its popularity. That is if you want to make it as a successful artist of course. Just remember though, successful artist never intend for their work to be shit on. This is the main difference between you're mentality and a successful artists mentality because from what I can tell, you expect you're work to be shit on. You're so bad that you even feel bad selling you're work because you assume that it wont hold enough of you're patrons shit.

Didn't get to finish what I needed to say. I hate to break you're heart kid, but you don't know shit about art for being an art major. Im not an art major, but I have studied enough of its history to know that art isn't meant to be a tool for carrying someones shit.

I also wanted to add that you shouldn't confuse the function of a piece of art with the art it self. For example, one may consider a t-shirt with a cool design on it a piece of art. But instead, it is a piece of art put on a t-shirt. Look at it like this, say one day you were to remove the design from that shirt. Now the shirt would still serve the function it was originally intended to (that you could still wear it as a shirt) and it is still a shirt unless you can tell me otherwise. But without the design it is not art anymore because the t-shirts design was the art, unless you consider a plain t-shirt a work of art of course.
People to often make the mistake of considering what a work of art is added to as the art itself. The Cathedral of Notre Dame in its simplest form is just a building and so is the warehouse next to my apartment. The difference though is that the Cathedral had art applied to it which made it aesthetically pleasing to the human eye, which in turn made it a very well known building. Now I could sit here and ponder why the warehouse near my apartment isn't known through out the world, but the answer to why it isn't known is simple. Its because it is just a building, a building that doesn't have any art.

not a fan, and what sorta conceited asshole puts a picture (not a painting, but a picture) of himself as part of his artwork. people need to stop sucking this guys dick it isnt that hard to cut out pieces of griptape.(may take a long time but that doesnt make it hard)

Come on NS...

Self portraits are something artists have done for centuries. If I painted hundreds of my faces Like Vincent Van Gogh then I could meet you half way on the conceited bit but no. You seem butthurt though and I apologize for your aching anus but please tell me why, why does your rectum hurt you so?

if you read my post i clearly specify a picture not a painting, if it was a painting that would be fine, but this is just a cropped picture of your head someone else took

Left this deck sitting around while i was filming this summer, tore all the ligaments in my ankle a little less than a month ago, had some down time and a grip art contest came about for the new Girl video.
entered yesterday I feel good about it.
