Shooting at Canada's Parliament

Well that is crazy.

I give it half a page before this turns into a gun ownership shitstorm.

Lot of info coming out by the minute. Josh Wingrove is a reporter for the Globe and Mail and he shot some pretty incredible footage (pretty sure it was him) from inside parliament of the police and gunman exchanging fire.

Horrible, frustrating, frightening, infuriating to see this happen. Most important thing is for cooler heads to prevail while standing up against something like this. It shouldn't happen, and we need to show that we won't accept it.

that oldschool door barricade

heard about this on the news though, basically every canadian outlet is maximizing the coverage on this. and although nobody knows whos doing this or why, theyve already mentioned ISIS about 10 times. yay for fear mongering!

also i might add that the one shooter who has been killed was shot by the House of Commons Sargeant at Arms, which is like more of a formal position that sorta exists as a shoutout to the old British parliamentary stuff (from what I understand) so hes like a 60 year old dude who said fuck it this is my job and he stepped up.

hes the ninth sargeant at arms for canada apparently

Listening to csis and police talk makes me scared about what will happen to some of our freedoms in Ottawa after this.

Pretty fucked. I have a few friends at carleton and u of ottawa

The best twitter to follow is @CBCottawa if you want to keep up with it

I'm currently lockdowned at the University of Ottawa. In a room with 4 other people, and it's been 2.5 hours. At least my back to back midterms got canceled

it`s just good to know these people are such cowards and whatever they are trying to accomplish is futile.

as a Canadian it actually pisses me off the thought of someone taking a gun and attacking our country. stay strong Ottawa.

Rideau Centre lockdown just lifted per Twitter. Also RCMP presser at 2 eastern (10 minutes from now)

Same, have a bunch of friends on OttawaU on lockdown.

Shits just crazy, guess the shooter stole a car at gunpoint and drove up to the parliament building before going in and shooting a bunch.

Not that it's important but the Sens Leafs game got postponed tonight.

Haha yea he probably was...sounds like one badass dude though. Just one more reason to carry a concealed gun on you in this day and age.

Back on topic..... It would be cool if the NHL sung Oh Canada at every game tonight. kinda un-related but thats just what I think

Dude was a 29 year veteran of the RCMP and was at least as qualified as anyone else on site to take the guy out.

If games held in Canada sang the national anthem every time something like this in America - might as well make it a staple before the games...

Over 90% of the games in Canada already sing the American national anthem...... 7 out of 30 NHL teams are from the US... And plus shootings inside The White house don't happen to often, huh?

Live about a 10 minute walk from parliament, all my classes today are cancelled(University of Ottawa). Pretty crazy and yeah not many people would expect this too happen in Canada. But a member of service (the one who was shot) passed away. So thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends

no its not you goof, he is essentially the chief of parliamentary security, im amazed the gun he had wasnt a fucking musket. his job is way more administrative and symbolic than anything. this has nothing to do with concealed carry so lets please not get into this.

This is gross to hear about... Even more ridiculous that it's not getting bigger press right now. This happens in the USA and the world goes on lockdown...

I live about 20-30 minutes from where this all went down. We had a secure school from 10am-2pm (Have to stay in class rooms.) It was insane, truly a terrible day for us in ottawa, as well as Canadians as a nation.

Some dumb fuck kid that lives in the area posted this on twitter

He is now getting tweeted at and about by most of the kids in Ottawa, and they are pissed.

Holy shit that's tense. I don't claim to be a forensic expert but according to reports the shooter was using a double-barreled shotgun, and most of those shots were not shotgun blasts, they lit him the fuck up.

thoughts out to you guys up north!

To see the byward market look like this, I'm absolutely stunned. This is usually one of the busiest places in Ottawa.

Shooter is named Michael Zehaf-Bibeau. Seemingly Arabic last name. Quick google shows contradicting reports, some saying he had changed his name to Abdul while others said he had changed it then dropped it.

Interesting to see the background. Can't imagine he is ISIS-affiliated. If he is, it cannot be more than from internet-related interactions. I bet Fox News has already started spewing fear mongering statements that he is.

RIP

Like the ones you insinuated in both of these paragraphs. Then you go on to blame someone else for doing it just because you assume they will...even though you just did. Jesus

RIP to the bro who was killed. Curious to see what the shooter was pissed about

Yeah - don't entirely agree with you here. i think that the name sounds way more French Canadian than Arabic, maybe one of his parents was Arabic but He was even described as Caucasian, early-mid 30s, overweight. Not that he couldn't have radical islamic sympathies but Michael Zehaf-Bibeau ? Pretty French even with the Zehaf

I go to Carleton U also. It was pretty normal on campus all day. Even though we're like a 20 min bus ride from Parliament, it still was pretty frightening. We always hear about this stuff happen in other places, like the James Holmes movie theater shooting in Colorado for example, but us Canadians feel so safe, especially in boring old Ottawa. I know I have a few friends who live downtown like 2km from the shooting, and this was a huge eye opener, I think for the whole country. And there was already the hit and run on the two soldiers that happened 2 days ago which was also linked to be a terrorist action. This is all because we pissed off the ISIS by going back to fight. Hopefully there isn't anymore attacks to come. 2 is far more than enough.
