i donno if there's anyway to cure it entirely, but i'd sure like to know how to prevent it as much as possible and how to heal it faster. any tips would be awesome

Eat, Breathe, Ski

yeah, i got salomon evolutions and i think they might be part of the problem, im probably gonna look into some other boots so thanks for the 1080 suggestion

make sure your boots are the RIGHT SIZE... they are probably to big... and get a foot bed from SuperFeet. Not SureFoot, SureFoot sucks... they don't contain the foot in a sub-talor-neutral position, they allow for excessive pronation, and don't keep the foot in the heel pocket like SuperFeet.

to make sure your boots are the right size, take out the liner, and put your foot inside the shell. Slide your toes up to the very front of the boot, cross your index and middle fingers and stick them down between your heel and the back of the shell. it should be a snug fit, if you can fit more than a finger and a half back there, your boots are too big.

Right Size boot+Superfoot trim to fit orthodic= happy feet when skiing. (landing backseat doesn't help either)

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit orthodic.

There is also a custom cork orthodic but it costs considerably more, and if you are still growing... a waste of money if your foot is gonna be bigger in 6 months.

But if you want the best fit, the custom cork is the way to go, make sure who ever makes it knows what the hell they are doing... because its easy to fuck it up if they don't. Ask them to explain Subtalor neutral position, pronation and supernation, if they look at you like you are speaking zulu, go somewhere else.

good call with the footbeds. it sucks if your still growing cause they are expensive. i have lange banshee 9's with Conformable custom footbeds and lange narrowing pads on the tongues. more or less no shin bang ever. lange now makes a jib boot, but the comp 100's should do well if you have a norrower foot. the conformable footbeds are really nice because, first of all, its a custom mold of your foot in the unweighted position, how your foot is meant to be before it collapses in or out, depending on your foot. also, if you are really flat footed, you can full post it with foam up through the arch of your foot instead of just the heel posting. i am not really sure how superfeet footbeds work, they may be very similar

shin bang sucks... the advice above is awesome for preventing it, thanks jibtech (I thank you for every one else :) As for after you get it... last year I went out to Copper for a week and got the worst shin bang by day 3. After trying numerous things, what worked awesome was foam camping mat from walmart. It cost like $10 for a big roll of it. If you cut in and put it in places around where your shin hurts it is great. It feels really bulky at first, but it compresses and takes a lot of the shock of the pressure and landings. hope it helps

now the old man sits until the days when time stood still, the hours always seem to fade, but the memeories never will. All the love that you gave me, the dreams in the night. Now I just want to thank you, while the day's still light.

get a stiffener put in the top of your boot to spread pressure, or get some garage weather sealing tape at the hardware store and crap a couple strips of that down the sides of the toungue

softer boots help though for sure - i had lange gx9's two seasons ago because i got them for $5 and the first kicker i hit gave me shin bang for 3 weeks.....couldn't even touch my shins without extreme pain and i hadn't really even landed wrong. then i wised up and got some salomon xwave 6's (close to the flex of the 1080 boots) and i only get minor shin bang if i land too far backseat

Abba Zabba, you my only friend

i had the 1080 pro last year and my shines were fucked i got the 120 comp FR from lange this year and i have been out two days and they are fucking awesome if you are a 26.5 let me know because i have a pair of 120 comps for sale that is what i think that you should do

A little hint i learned from running cross country. When you get shin splints/shin bang, take a piece of wood that is about 1-2 inches high. Put it on the ground. Stand on it with the front part of your foot. Then lower yourself with your legs straight, and go back up. Do it 20 at a time, 2X a day. It helps so much. Hope this helps...

Life is simple: Eat, sleep, ski.

PAT, I GOT A LITTLE SHIN BANG LAST YEAR, AND I WENT TO THE BOOT SHOP AT SNOWBIRD, FIRST I FOUND OUT MY BOOTS WERE TOO BIG, SECOND, I BOUGHT RAICHELLE FLEXON BOOTS, THEY DONT HAVE A BREAK POINT, SO EVEN IF YOU DO GET THRUSTED FORWARD, THERE IS NO WAY TO GET SHIN SPLINT.

why are some of the superfeet footbeds like a hundred dollars. that seems crazy i think mine is like 30, even that is a lot

levin is right on. footbeds are clutch. also I have the zip-fit cork linning and they are so sick. don't get em though if you are growing. and I have 1080 boots with the added rivet for stiffness, but boots alone won't prevent shinbang. the key is to stay forward and keep pressure on the front of your boots. this will make yiou a better skier since you won't be backseat all the time.

lol, i got the worst shitbang up at COC this summer, my sock on my right leg fell down sometime during the 2nd day and all i was doing was hiking, so i got these two huge blisters right in the middle of my shin, not alot of fun, but it didnt really matte cuz my right shin is numb from knee surgery... so the moral of the story is have the nerves to your shin cut, then you dont fell the pain

too soft of a boot can hurt you to, you need to get a boot thats apropreite for your weight and skier ability.

1260prorider has some good advice. I run cross country also and my coach makes the team do toe taps everyday to strengthen the shin muscle. It helps!!! Toe taps are done by standing with your feet together but toes spread apart to about a 45 degree angle and then keep your weight even on both legs and start with one foot and lift up your toe and then back down(the motion of tapping your toe). Do the tapping at a fairly fast pace for about one minute or more until you start to feel the burn in your shins, then you know its working the muscle. You can adjust the height of your tapping for a better work out. This is a very easy simple work out for your shins. All you have to do is stand up and tap one toe for a minute and then switch and tap the other toe for a minute, maybe do this twice a day. I know it may sound silly but try it and if you keep at it and strengthen your shins then shinbang might not be a 3 week soreness anymore that keeps you from doing what you love. HEY! It works for me.

i just got the new 1080 boots(super lime green) with a super feet foot bed and i have skied 7 of the last 9 days with absolutely no shin bang its great, my old boots it was shin bang after 20 mins of skiing but now there is none!!!!!

Jibtech just made his most informative, helpful post ever on here. Listen to everything that he said. You can get the trim to fits for like 25-30 bucks, full cork can run you like 75-100 depending where you get them done at.

The one thing that sux about surefoot (correct me if im wrong) is that they mold the footbed to your foot when your standing, thus your foot is pronating, or in a longer position then in a sitting position. This means that you need a boot that is longer, where as a footbed that constructed when you are sitting will be most supportive and let you get in a smaller boot.

Get some raichle/kneissl flexons or a booster strap. I heard that helps too.

oh yes, and if you take a good footbed to surefoot, they will fuck it up, they killed mine and i couldnt afford to get a new one.

holy shit that sucks, ya well, i dunno about soft ones, hopefully they dont give me shin bang we will soon find out.

TRY EVERYTHING EVEN IF IT MEANS KICKING YOUR OWN ASS

There is a muscle on your shin that can be strengthened. It's hard to do, but the exercise you can do are backward sprints or a toe raise. The toe raise you can do pretty much anywhere. If you are in school you can rest your heel on the desk ahead of you and rasie your toe towards you. If you can strengthen it, it will definately help. other than that remember to continue to ice it and ice it alot.

Holy shit off trail!! Thats brutal!!! both bones? That must have sucked ass. Was it from over shotting the landing?

no i came out of a chute straight line maching and cartwheeled in way graby snow. the doc said i was doing about 50mph

dude the line transfer boot is seriously worth looking into.

I race and i have one of the if not the stiffest boot you can buy and if i land with my weight too far back i get shin bang bad! I think im going to get a softer boot this year.

I doubt that you have the stiffest boot on the market, being that they produce so little of them. For instance, more then likley your in a dobe or lange, in which case your prolly riding the soft, or mediem flex dobe, or the zc/zc lange. Now, there are stiffer boots then those, they just dont sell to the general public, or most racers for that matter.
