Basically, Officer Ian Birk fatally shot Indian Woodcarver John Williams in broad daylight. He pulled up behind Mr. Williams and ordered him to " drop a knife" from 30ft away. seconds later he fired off 4 rounds into Williams back and side. Williams was nearly deaf and the knife was found closed, a 4" legal blade and for anyone wondering, those knifes can't just collapse on themselves to shut.

So basically tomorrow DA Sattenburg and Mayor McShcwinn are announcing that no criminal charges will be pressed against Birk. It is absurd, this man just got away with murder. Sure there will be a civil suit, but this man needs to be in jail. The news was released at like 10pm tonight and protest are already being organized, so things will probably get pretty interesting.

Its a rarity to see this happen on the East coast to this extent, even considering differences in population and population density. I think, honestly, it starts from a lack of education out there. Back to the point though, it is absurd that this officer will not see a single criminal charge brought against him.
 
They would prosecute if they thought there was even a slim chance at conviction, but there isn't. It would be a long, expensive, drawn out process and in the end the jury would say "not guilty."
 
I don't know how the DA could ever look Williams family members in the face after not even going for a manslaughter conviction. A King County Inquest jury already voted

4- Birk faced no imminent threat before shooting Williams

3- Could not determine if Birk faces an imminent threat

1- Birk faced an imminent threat.

I know these are not charges for manslaughter or murder, but how broken is our legal system when we won't even bring it to trial to see it play out? And when people write it off to "oh well, would have just taken time and money anyhow."

How is that justice?

If that was your relative, would you really still feel that way?

honestly guys just think about what these cops go through every day, facing life or death situations, protecting you the citizen. If they squeeze one off prematurely, or sock someone encroaching their fist area we should just take it and thank them for protecting us and keeping us safe. When you're lying in the street beaten and robbed who are you gonna call for help? Probably not some paramedic that's for sure. everyone always complains about police but really there are so many laws odds are you're breaking one right now, so you don't have any room to talk you criminals. I'm not making assumptions on why he's an overbearing prick, just stating from the video you can clearly tell he is. I mean in his defense she did kick off her shoe in his direction lol.
 
I agree, and I don't hate the police by any means. What I do despise is the way the SPD has handled themselves over the past year. I still cannot figure out why they didn't hire an outsider to be promoted to police chief instead of promoting someone internally (Diaz) and making things look like business as usual. They withheld evidence of this shooting for months and released only small portions at a time. They are just going over the top protecting their own kind, and I understand that in many cases, but this case there is no way. I can't see how they can justify shielding someone for murder. Then you have the DA Dan Satterburg who will not even bring charges forward. I'm personally just disgusted and if you go through the comments section of that Seattle Times article and click the highest rated tab, you will see that a majority of the people in the region are too.
 
I guess carrying a legal and closed pocket knife in Seattle in broad daylight while being deaf is a crime punishable by death. Be careful how you walk around with your cell phone, especially if you have a bluetooth device and are mid convo with someone, if Ian Birk is on the beat you may be shot. 4 times. in 2 seconds.

That whole situation is fucked. The only bit of leniency I will give the cop is that he probably had no way of knowing the guy was deaf...but nonetheless...shooting anybody should be an absolute last resort for any cop. Cops can and should be held accountable, but the real problem is, as you rightly pointed out in the op, the DA and city courts rarely want to or try to do anything. All it takes is 1 person with power to say "this isn't right, we have to do something" and the entire situation changes.

However stupid it is...hindsight is 20/20. We now know the man was deaf, and the knife was legal and folded. But did he know that immediately? I still think the cop is a scumbag for shooting him, but look at the info the way he had it, when he had it. In this case...yea, he's still a fuck up.

You'd think one or two would stop the guy right??? messed up shit he put four in that guy. To be fair though you can't really see anything, honestly that guy could have charged the cop with the knife and there is no way to tell from that video.

all those people in the videos either looked sketchy, or disrespected the cops. talk shit get hit is the case with some cops...the bad ones.

the man had a mental illness. do your research, and he both wasn't breaking the law, wasn't acting suspicious and by the bystanders testimony wasn't threatening.
 
Love how the news article can give shaky witness testimony that the guy looked back over his shoulder then was shot. Then they can state that the dudes autopsy showed a bac of .18, yet they can't tell us whether or not he was shot in the back according to the autopsy??? c'mon give us all the facts please.
