Same sex marriage vote on monday...

Just curious as to what anyone else thinks about the same sex marriage issue... congress is 'voting' on it on monday i believe. I personally dont care if they get married, i just dont think they should have the benifits of a woman/man couple... IE, tax break, shared medical plans, etc...

And They Say There's A Marajuana Problem!... There's No Problem, Everyone Has It...

I think you got it backwards buddy. The way i see it is that all people are entitled to the same rights, no matter there sexual orientation, but i believe that the actual marriage of 2 non heterosexual people is wrong. Whatever a person does behind closed doors is perfectly fine by me, but the minute it is embraced by the world as a 'normal' occurence, and it becomes absolutley accepted then it becomes my business, and i will voice my oppionon. I definatley do not believe that marriage is the answer to the problem, but some sort of similar laws, allowing them to receive similar rights.

Yea for sure..Marriage is a Christian thing, and Christianity doesnt believe in homosexuality, so I dont think that they should be allowed a Christian marriage, but I do think they should be allowed to be legally joined by the state and get the same financial benefits that married people do.

skiinstead equal rights means equal rights. its unconstitutional to not give them the same rights as any other human being. if rules were based on normality then diversity would hardly exist.

besides, who gets to decide what is normal. should that be determined on existing percentages? as i've said a thousand times homosexuality may be abnormal in comparision to that of the majority or average, but thats not a fair method of judgement. how many times must we clarify that homosexuality occurs naturally, because it simply occurs. if it wasn't then it would be a choice, which it definately is not.

psychopaths naturally occur, paedophiles naturally occur, paranoid schizophrenics occur. they are treated unequally because they pose a potential threat to society as well as the inherent possiblity for self destructive behavior. my question to you is this, the only viable reason to check the rights of a homosexual would be because of an existing and legitimate potential for harm. please explain to me what threat is posed by homosexuality? because that is the only possible validation for unconstitutional treatment of an individual.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: we need to abolish marriage in this country (at least from a legal standpoint). Let's make it so whether you're gay or straight, the only thing you can get is a nationally recognized civil union. Then you can go to whatever religious organization you are affiliated with in order to get married, depending on whether they let you. See, the word 'marriage' is just confusing things, since a religious marriage is a completely different thing from a legal marriage. For example: I am (no shit) an ordained minister. I can, in the eyes of God and the Christian Church, marry people. However, that doesn't mean they can file jointly on their income tax forms or take advantage of spousal benefits on their health insurance. For that, they would have to go down to the courthouse and get a marriage certificate.

Let's leave marriage to the churches, and we can make sure that gays and straights are treated equally in this country.

^ i can't say that i disagree with that idea, but thats waaaaay to practical for our country. we simply aren't that rational. marriage is far too shiny and distracting to be thinking in such a manner. besides, you can't deny the fact that people universally enjoy adherence to cultural norms. marriage is a central part of our existence. its the single act that defines a majority of peoples forward planning. marriage is the moment that you have (generally speaking, this obviously doesn't apply to all of us) acheived your number one goal. marriage cements and confirms the predominant love, it is a sign of investment and without that seal of approval (religious of course) it just wont feel right. for fucks sake, i'm an aetheist and despite my vehemnt opposition to a creator i'll be married by a religious official.

Homosexuals should have every other right anyone else in this fucking country does!!!! from a political standpoint, all men are created equal, and the constitution says that all mean should get the same rights. From a religious stand point, God loves all of his children and created them all equally, you are suppossed to love your neighbor no matter who they are. Everyone has the right to a marriage and the benefits that come with it. Discrimination is basically illegal so if we vote no to same sex marriages we are discriminating and thats just not right.. and anyone whos religious can suck is because you don't have the right to press your religion on to anyone else.... if they aren't religious and are gay and want to get married, nothing should be stopping them

dude, skinstead, what problem are you talking about? and dude, how does people that happen to be gay getting married have anything to do with you? why do you care, its not affecting you so why should you care?

go listen to some emo. those whiny guys feel your pain. -linemaverick5...

nope it's totally a christian thing... if you don't go to church every sunday and you don't go to sunday school and/or bible study at LEAST twice a week you're not allowed go get married...

*note sarcasm*

gays should have the same rights as everyone else... what does it matter to you if a gay or lesbian couple is married? sexual orientation shouldn't matter at all... let them get married if it makes them happy...

Not afraid to be mistaken not afraid to try, not afraid to be uncertain not afraid to die

Im actually confused with this issue please sumone answer this question for me. If they make gay marraige leagal and give them the same rights as hetros does that in turn affect me as a person in terms of taxes, or anyway?

If the answer to that is no i dont see the big deal let them be happy thats what life should be about!

i think it would be funny if straight people staretd getting married just for the economic benefits and to avoid the draft. 'dude, wanna get married tomorrow? save money and keep outta combat.' 'yeah sure'

equal rights for ALL yo, that's all I've gotta say. I'm Canadian so I probably shouldn't say anything but this issue on the whole kills me because it shouldn't be an issue at all. It's an issue in Canada too though and I think that's retarded, thank god Harper didn't get elected. There is no reason whatsoever that gay couples shouldn't have all the rights that straight couples have, as long as they love each other who gives a shit?

^Even if they didn't, no one would care, if only they weren't gay. No one would be screaming about the affront to the institution of marriage in that case.

Just out of curiosity what is the law in Cananda is it illegal there too?

I fully agree with you J.D., that's what makes this even more retarded. All the conservative minded politicians who strive to keep gay marriages illegal couldn't care less about whether or not the people getting married love each other, so long as they're straight so their precious 'institution of marriage' isn't undermined

'Just once I'd like someone to call me sir without adding, you're making a scene!' - Homer

^ Semantics, and the letter of the law above the spirit. It's a great irony that bigotry is central in this issue, as hate will go farther in marring an institution founded in love than anything else I can imagine.

everybody keeps saying that gays should get the same 'rights' as straight people. They should but marriage isn't a right. Health care isn't a right. They are privileges. If you don't believe me read the Bill of rights, you won't see the right of marriage or health care, or whatevert the hell you want in there.

as far as normality goes, it shouldn't be based on percentages, it should be based on whats natural. 2 gay guys butt fucking isn't normal. Humans weren't made to do that. Humans are supposed to find a memeber of the opposite sex, and have a couple kids.

Bottom line is that gays shouldn't be allowed marriage licenses.

its just wrong...dont say anyhting to me cauuse it wont change my opinion..gay marriage was never ever for never ever never ever meant to happen

I have no problem with equal rights, but don't put marrige in the equation. Give them civil unions, or some other equal union but just not 'marrige'. Let them have all the same rights as marrige but just give some other title.

Also, I think that this needs to be taken care of at the federal level and not at liberal courts around the nation, there needs to be unity on this issue.

who are you rednecks to decide what's natural? it doesn't affect you in any way so why would you care? it absolutely blows my mind that this nation would actually consider banning gay marriage and equal rights for homosexual couples. that would be like re-segregating the school system or taking away a woman's right to vote. we've come too far to take a step backwards like this.

People really need to stop saying 'unnatural'. Sorry, you're wrong. I've shown it several times. Learn to read.

Meanwhile, I'd like to make a thread or something to explain to some of these people how to make an argument properly... you know, in a manner that makes logical sense? Unfortunately, I know it would just fall off the first page after a day, and it's not worth my effort to write pages upon pages of that shit out if it's just going to fall by the wayside. If anyone has a solution to that problem, please let me know.

Ah, hell. I always get annoyed by these threads.

regardless or rights and regardless of what is 'natural' the point is, you blatantly treat them as lesser beings. you do not see them as equals. and as long as you do that then you are in contradiction with the foundation of this country. its so unbelievably blatant. you simply cannot fucking deny it.

not to point out the obvious, but what 'rights' do heterosexual people have that homosexual people dont have?

i cant marry a guy, and neither can a gay guy, there are our rights, like it or not

if marraige means everything, then it means absolutly eveything

'Really, I gotta say that I'm glad you exist, 'cause if there wasn't there'd be noone to make fun of and diss.'

no right to marriage, NO RIGHT TO HEALTH CARE? are you fucking nuts? every human being on this planet has the right to FUCKING LIVE! where the fuck are you going with the health care comment? seriously you think that since someone cant afford it or arent able to obtain healthcare that 'oh well, sucks for you' why dont you put yourself in someones situation where they arent able to recieve proper healthcare/medication then maybe you have a right to fuacking say something!

and whats wrong with two guys getting married because they love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together while so many straight people in this world trash marriage such as those in the media spotlight like britney spears, j.lo and that 50% of strait marriages endin divorce. i think you should address that issue too while you think you are such an expert on marriage while people in this country are getting married 2, 3, 4, or more times in their lives. thats trashin the whole idea of marriage

um aggro, thats quite an irrelevant point: you don't want to marry a gay guy. quite possibly some of the worst logic ive seen, even worse than irishdrink.
