Same sex marriage vote on monday...

i definately am against homosexual marriages.. and being married is not a christian thing like said in the begginning of this thread.. all religions do it. and all religions are actual against homosexual marriages.. its disgusting to see homosexuals on tv getting tv ratings up becuase it almost shows that homosexuality is ok, which it most definately is not.. if the us votes gay marriages legal its off to canada for me

May i remind all of you homophobes of a little history? Ok.. it goes like this, before slavery was outlawed, african americans were prohibited to marry because it was 'unnatural' and God did not approve. Well, they were allowed to marry once people saw that they were people too. Next, African Americans and Whites were not allowed to marry because (guess what!) it was deemed 'unnatural', yet somehow people came around. No, that wasn't a long time ago either, Maryland finally repealled its law against interracial marriages in 1967. Sorry to break it to you guys, but the argument against gay marriages is the excact same as the arguments in the past.

Oh yeah, the religous part? 'A recent book by Yale Historian John Boswell demonstrates that Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches both sanctioned and sanctified unions between partners of the same sex, until modern times. i think they should be allowed to get married i just don't believe they should call it marriage. they deserve all the same rights as anyone else but since marriage is a religious term it should be left out

You don't have to agree as to whether it's 'right' or 'natural' (I mean, is driving SUVs or firing guns in line with what's 'natural'? If god had meant us to roll along at upwards of 75 miles an hour, he would have given us wheels and an engine). All you have to agree on is that, whether or not you agree with it shouldn't make it illegal or immoral. It's not a difficult concept to grasp and it's an ideal upon which this country was founded!

BTW I realize that the comparison to driving a car is a bit overextended, and I don't care.

homosexual marrige should not be legalized, because then they will be busy planning their weddings, and i will be forced to hire a heterosexual wedding consultant in the future, and we all know it wont be as good...

...And the Bible sure is in touch with modern society, isn't it? The same section of the Bible that has been interpreted to mean that homosexuality is wrong also says that it is against the Christian faith to eat shellfish. And of course, there's God's decree that working on the sabbath is punishible by death.

Where is the push to criminalize work on the sabbath and enfore the death penalty for such an infraction?

What I'm trying to say is not that we must ignore the Bible; the bible has some pretty good stuff in it. What I'm saying is that this was written by a bunch of people back 1,000 years ago, for a society that existed 1,000 years ago. Things have changed since then and the interpretations of religious texts must necessarily change to fit the dynamic nature of society.

In other words: How the hell can you justify taking one passage of the Bible literally and strictly and completely ignore others, seemingly on a whim? It just doesn't make sense!
