i'm all for rad new ski companies and chicks being rad and what not, but does anyone else think that women specific ski design is kind of a joke?

No it is not a joke. You essentially have two groups within a female consumer market. One side has feelings that they shouldn't be catered to, that men's equipment is what works best for them and that they don't need "girly" flowers on their stuff. The other side is thrilled to have more choices than the current offering and the choice of skis that work a bit better for their specific physiology. Most female specific product has the sidecut moved up a slight bit and may contain a different blend of woods within the core.

If brands simply create a single product, slapping both men's and women's titles on them, it is a joke. If they start from the ground up, re-engineer an idea for a product to the women's liking and create something step by step to what they want, then it is a good thing.

 
another ski is not a big deal, especially for girls. More marketing and catering to skiing means were doing great exposure wise, and growing the sport

"unnecessary technology"? that's just ridiculous. you started out with sensible input into this discussion, but continued to spiral downward. A couple questions. Why so much hate for your own sex? The only thing that this will accomplish is increased negativity towards women. Why not shut your mouth and just teach by example. Chances are, these girls that bother you so much that "are trying to look cool" will realize that DOing cool things is fun too. And if not, whatever. If it makes them happy then leave well enough alone. One more thing. Men and women's bodies are just different, there's no way around it. You might say that women are doing just fine without this new "unnecessary technology," but that's a mistake. Yes, there are some sick girls in our sport and they are continuing to pop up everywhere. props. but the sport is still VERY small, there is NO money in it, and anything to make it more accessible, more accomodating to the female sex, or to anyone for that matter, is a good, lucrative thing.

i will go out of my way to find all the hot girls on roxy skis and make them my ski bunnies. clearly they will just ride them so that ridiculously good lookin guys(such as myself) will pick them up. i htink this will be a very successful stradegy for the girls.

 
I'm pretty sure I read about this in Skipress back in Febuary or something about how dynastar was making a line of skis for just women. But it didnt metion anything about it being with Roxy

I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START your entire speach was just a pile of contradictions. FIRST: "Roxy is trying to cash in on our sport?" are you fucking kidding me? dude, EVERY COMPANY is cashing in. that's what they do. that's how they're run. that's how athletes get paid, that's how the sport continues to thrive.

Two: whether girls are pushing it enough at this point holds absolutely no relevance in this conversation.. Unless of couse you think that Roxy making skis will somehow hinder future progression of women's skiing. And if this is your belief, please just go away, i'm wasting my time.

Three: "if they already have ones [unisex skis] that will do them just fine" Again, has little to do with the topic at hand. For one thing, most skis change every year. And new developments do improve abilities. If they didn't, we would all still be riding those yellow teneightys. And, if kids don't buy new stuff every now and then, once again, our sport is in trouble, struggling as it is. BUT, on another note, what about the girls that have never tried skiing? (too many) Girls that, for all practical purposes, have never even HEARD of it. I still get asked how my races went, or my favorite: "so you snowboard?" when responding to a comment about rails or jumps. What about the girls that are too intimidated to try skiing by the current lack of girls? How is the sport supposed to grow without appealing to potential newcomers?

Good Thing: because quiksilver is super rich and pretty much owns everything, they will have tons of money to put into our sport. (see how they didnt buy a snowboard company before they got a ski company? or did they?) the skis will probably be pretty sick and girls will be like shit dawg me like. then quiksilver will make guy skis and guys will be like yo snoop shiznats cool. then we wil buy there shirts, jackets, pants, shoarts, boxers, thongs, bras, and even golf clubs and they wil won the world!!!!

dude, MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND. if you don't need the skis, don't buy 'em. if jane smith already has fine skis, she probably wont buy them. but if young little Katie is looking into a winter sport to try, and sees roxy skis or ads or athletes, is already familiar with roxy and likes the brand (for whatever reason- that's not for you to judge), and chooses skis instead of a snowboard, then i consider that a win for us. that money, and all future funds that Katie will put forth in her efforts to ski, will go into this sport. that girl has just one upped the tally. you seem to be very apprehensive, like we're being hunted, and roxy is tracking us down to suck us in to floral prints and pink polka dots. please, if you believe in this sport and the athletes that are TRYING to make a living at it, you will stop objecting to its growth. there is no substitution for money. and unfortunately, it's the institution that this world is necessarily based on.

... did you know roxy runs worldwide surf camps for girls? did you know they are producing a girl snowboard video, and sponsoring an independent one? you are ok with the big money that will come from roxy entering the sport, but have some conflict with their "non-coreness", their marketing tactics and attempts to sell the lifestyle: shirts, shoes, etc. the only reason they are able to do a lot of great things for women's sports is that they have a lot of money, which comes from being a big company. and selling things. like shoes.

if roxy making skis will get more girls out in the park I can't really say that I see what the problem is. if some chicks want to rip with flowerprints and pink hearts on their skis that should be equally accepted as hitting the jumps with the public enemy, 1080s or whatever. maybe some of us don't find it necessary with skis only aimed for the female market, but if some does, why not? and it is an anatomically fact that girls and guys are different, and we ski different. and I don't mean that pros such as grete and sarah aren't killer skiers, but maybe maybe new technology will make girls even better. I'm not saying that a ski is what we need to make up the difference, but how can it not be worth trying?
