RIP Erik Roner

1:00 PM MST, Jackson Hole, Wyoming: According to two different sources, we have just learned that legendary action sports athlete Erik Roner has died in a skydiving accident in Lake Tahoe, California. Roner was part of a group of four skydivers that included JT Holmes and Aaron McGovern who were the opening act of a golf tournament in the Lake Tahoe area today. Roner reportedly hit a tree at high speed as he was coming in for a landing, and either died immediately or shortly succumbed to his injuries.

According to Roy Tuscany, founder of the Lake Tahoe-based High Fives Foundation and a witness at the scene along with a crowd of approximately 120 others at the golf tournament, McGovern landed first, followed by JT, and then Roner followed but hit a tree close to the landing zone. "He hit a tree... he hit a tree so hard. I don't know what happened from there," said an obviously choked-up Tuscany over the phone from Truckee.

Roner, who has starred in multiple TGR films over the years and has been a prolific figure in the wider action sports community, leaves behind two amazing children and a lovely, loving wife. "That's the most important thing that needs to resonate amongst everyone," Tuscany said. "That Erik had an amazing family–two beautiful, beautiful kids and an amazing wife."

We will update this story as relevant details become available. Rest in peace, Erik. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your loving family, and your friends at this hour.

Was anyone actually surprised by this news? Seriously.

I guess the guy loved adrenaline rushes more than he loved his kids and family.

There's a time and a place for this debate and it is not here, not now. He died living the life he loved and that's more than any of us can really hope for. SIP

Why the need to say shit like this?

I mean, is it risky? Of course, but who are you to say anything. And why do you need to post an "I told you so" kind of angle when somebody died.

Somebody could say the same thing about skiing. Doing triple corks on skis? You're just risking your life and should stop unless you don't love your family.

Idk, it's really sad news and I don't understand the need for people to post shit like this all the time.

Maybe you don't care about him, that's fine, but why the need to tell everyone about how you feel he was a horrible person for whatever reasons.

Idk.

Sad news. RIP

Gonna go send it today on the two inches of snow that we have for the man Roner. SIP and RIP buddy, we miss you.

fuck man he's got a little boy too...

And all though this is tragic, both of his children are going to grow up in one of the most supportive communities they possibly could be hearing of their father as a legend. It's not the same as growing up with your father, but they are young enough, and this community caring enough that they will both grow up and be exactly who they are supposed to be.

Yea pretty much.

Heard he was caught in the tree for upwards of 30 minutes before they could cut him down. What a fucking terrible wedding.

Feel for his family and friends, and that Squaw Valley / Lake Tahoe area. Can't imagine what JT is going through yet again.

I've watched Erik over the years ski BASE cliff after cliff. One hell of a skier, but more importantly, one hell of a guy. Always a smile on his face, cheering on those around him. It sucks to have great skiers leave us, but every time I hear new like this, about Sarah, CR, Shane JP, and so many more, it seems the one with the best attitudes and widest smiles are the ones that get taken away. Erik was right there with the greatest. RIP.

Damn this is too sad. A family man too.

I keep flashing back to the scene in RE:Session when Roner is debating weather or not to send a cliff in AK after hearing the news Shane died. He just said "well, Shane would have wanted me to send" (or something like that) and went for it. Crazy the same thing happened to him. SIP man, you'll be missed.

my thoughts and love go out to the Roner family, absolutely terrible.

in light of these losses, i'd like to see the community refrain from the term RIP/SIP that has been developed and used so loosely...in my eyes, and this is subjective, but it looks disrespectful. write it out at the very least. it puts a weird taste in my mouth seeing comments with one word or the acronym posted. I understand SIP was formed here on good ol' NS as a way of deciphering those that were/are involved in the community in comparison to.....'regular citizens', but come on..

I'd still rather grow up with a dad. Seems like a selfish lifestyle

No words can describe how bad it hurts to learn that one of your heroes has passed away, RIP Eric Roner, you will truly be missed.

Shane will finally get a chance to give him a high five for retiring his sled in style:

RIP to the awesome.

Damn that hit me hard

Oh man. What a huge bummer. I hung out with him a few times at work in the last couple years, and he was always such a nice, humble, goofy guy to talk with.

Wow. I don't have the words right now.

RIP so sad. And on a side note, tomorrow Sept. 29 marks the 1 year anniversary of JP's passing. September is becoming a rough month.

Nitro's never gonna be the same. You were an amazing athlete, person, and inspiration to us all. Always so positive and just an incredible influence.

Shred in peace Roner, gone too soon but never forgotten.
