This summer has been sad for skiers. We've lost too many amazing people. And to put a name like Erik Roner on that list is truly heartbreaking.

Damn, I never really post on here but I just want to say something about how when these things happen it feels like a friend passes, whether we know them personally or not. I never met Eric but was constantly aware of his development of the sport, I was coached by JP back in the day at High North, and I felt like I grew up and honed my sense of humor with Mcconkey, each passing burns with different flames. These people, our heroes, really become part of our lives. It seems like their passings bring us to the past and present simultaneously. We are reminded of how lives are lived well, and how our presence, in this and every other, is temporary.
Rest and ski in peace to all our sisters and brothers who have passed in the mountains. You are remembered and praised in every moment we spend in the mountains. We stand on your shoulders, your paths have helped to mold each of our own.

Erik Roner was one of the nicest, kindest, and most humble people that I have ever encountered in life. I grew up watching him in TGR movies, which ultimately got me hooked on skiing and the idea of moving out west after college. In college, while coming up on graduation and not having any idea of what the fuck I wanted to do in life, I decided to set my sights on moving out west. I sent Roner a facebook message, not expecting him to answer it. Not only did he answer me, a stranger/college kid from across the country asking him stupid/touristy questions, but we kept a dialogue going for awhile in which he answered any questions I had and offered up tons of motivation for the move. I'll never forget the final message which said: "just pull the trigger, buddy!"
I pulled the trigger. I moved out to Breck for a year, and then followed that year up with 4 more wild years out in Tahoe, where I got to meet Roner while we were drinking beers at the Chamoix after a sick day of skiing Squaw. I went up to him, thanked him, reminded him of the inspiration he provided me, we talked for quite a bit, and then we would say hi to each other and catch up here and there whenever I saw him out and about in Tahoe, which was usually on the "rarely" side since he was constantly traveling the globe and being a total badass. I guess I'm just happy that I was able to thank him for being him and providing a kid like me with the stoke and inspiration one often needs to "pull the trigger." I owe a lot of my good times in life to him and what he was able to provide me when I was looking for direction in life. Erik will eternally live on through this kind of inspiration that he provided to countless amounts of people.
This is just an awful, awful scenario in every single aspect. The world lost a wonderful person and my heart goes out to his family...I can't even imagine.

Damn... It was no more than a week ago I was laughing hysterically at his fathers day video he made throwing a dummy of his kid off cliffs and what not.
Skiing and actions sports as a whole lost a great man.

When Travis Pastrana walked into The Inertia offices a mere morning after Nitro Circus family member and best friend Erik Roner died in a tragic skydiving accident this Monday, there was a palpable disconnect about him. Whether he was disconnected from his surroundings, himself, or both I wouldn’t know, but it appeared almost as if he was lost… at the very least confused. Then he sat down, and as the weight of his body sunk into the couch, the weight of his thoughts seemingly sunk into his mind.
The thing about Erik that comes across clear as day is the undying spirit with which he impacted those around him. It was and is a spirit at once free and grounded: wandering in its exploratory nature; substantive in his soulful and ultimately forward-thinking approach.
So when the motorsport legend and Nitro Circus founder finally settled in for the interview and began speaking about Erik Roner, that palpable disconnect quickly shifted to an outsized respect and reverence — there was even a smile. Travis spoke of a legacy of love and living life to the fullest, a legacy the action sports star left to his wife, kids, and everyone he had ever touched.
