Real ski 2021

hackel wins fs, his edit was way more complete and Ik it’s not the rules but he kept it solely in the street. Ahall gets second he’s a rail wizard and lupe gets third. Would be ferdi but that park jump j disqualified him in my book
 
Wild how ferdi is usually praised on here during xgames aspen and slammed during this. Obviously I don't agree with the park jump business (shit definitely ruined the segment and the whole concept of the contest) but the change in perspective is interesting imo. Ig the man kinda did it to himself

I feel like people aren't talking about Lupe's spot selection enough. Granted others might have gotten shafted due to covid but he had some wild features in there, namely the fat downrail at the beginning and the various wonky sculptures. Would love to see him in 3rd. Idk if I want hackel's fucking mona lisa of skiing to be first or ahall's heater-filled clip. Both of them deserve it in different ways I think.
 
Hackels segment is a perfect example of the sport being pushed further through means other than "more spinny more flippy is good" not saying more wild tricks are a bad thing, but curating clips, camera angles, and careful editing make even the shortest videos feel momentous and way different than other stuff. Dont get me wrong just bangers with some Wutang in the background will never disappoint but higher concept and more cinematography-focused stuff is so cool for the future of the sport.
 
LOL why would you out a park jump in your real ski edit? And why is there backcountry in people's edit? This is a street contest no?
 
I was pretty hesitant when I first got the invite and heard it wasn't only going to be street. I had very mixed feelings because I knew it would make judging even harder. Personally I think that for this competition format just street is the better option. But the fact that we were allowed to film whatever we wanted meant that I wanted to branch out because I felt it best represented my skiing. Going in my plan was 70% urban 30% pow. Btw the pow clips were by far the hardest to stack

Yeah, this year wasnt as mind blowing as last year. The exception was Alex Hall; that performance was amazing. I love when a rider can ride any location and bring the game.
 
just watched all of the edits right before opening this thread so ima spit my shit while my thoughts are fresh.

A-Hall’s video was absolutely insane. Very technical and very stylish, and I definitely enjoyed how flowy his entire video was.

Hackel’s video was a fucking work of art. The dub cork 7 in that was so casual I had to rewind a few times to process what was going on. Also it’s dope to see Peyben show off his talent behind the lens bc he’s pretty talented when skiing in front of the lens.

Lupe’s was stylish and very mellow. I really enjoyed the vibe that was perfectly mixed among the skiing and the filming. Just like Hackel, his edit was strictly street and I liked that.

Taylor’s edit was definitely dope, but some of the shots were definitely repetitive as there weren’t enough kinked rails and wall rides imo.

T-Hall’s video was a classic T-Hall edit. Despite the injury, he definitely made the most of it, but I bet it’s definitely tough trying to score a triple backflip versus the shit Hackel and A-Hall were throwing.

Lastly, what the fuck was Ferdi’s edit? First rail shot was on the same rail Cal hit in the recent Child Labor movie and his super fed was steezier than Ferdi’s lip front 4. Also a fucking park jump shot? Really? I respect Ferdi as a skier but his edit just showed how much a fucking joke X Games has been this season.

With that all said, my top three:

1.) torn between A-Hall and Hackel

2.) A-Hall or Hackel if one of them doesn’t get first

3.) Lupe

In conclusion, X Games is a fucking joke and they really need to separate street skiers from the backcountry skiers for next year. Also they really shouldn’t leak full clips before the edits are released online.
 
Hackel should win. His cinematography was insane.

What I loved the most about his edit was that his technical and creative tricks were not necessarily the stars of the shot. Peyben played around with framing and his subject in a way that every shot felt balanced.

I think this step back from being 100% skier-focused is refreshing from a consumer standpoint. He let the natural beauty of his environment come through. His real ski edit was not just an edit, it was a spiritual experience. Everybody always talks about the style and expressive element of freestyle, and, in this video, every frame embodied it.

Yes, A-Hall had mind-blowing tricks, but he always brings that to the table in any XGames event and is rewarded for it. In the end, A-Hall might edge out Hackel because that is what the judges like. But, in the age of independent ski movies, Hackel and Peyben have done more for the medium with their submission than anyone else.

As for the people saying Taylor deserves the top three, no hate, but compared to Dahl, Hackel, Ahall, and Lupe, she just wasn't on the same level.

I agree; if I was someone fresh to freestyle skiing, the edit that would make me want to look more into that skier/style would've been Hackel and Peyben's. Hackel has the most unique street style out there and Peyben turns anything he films into magic.
 
Taylor’s may have been lacking in skiing compared to everyone but the editing and music flowed well. In terms of an enjoyable edit I really liked hers. A Hall was insane tho ? my vote definitely goes to A Hall but Taylor would be second.

Go watch Sam Zahners Real Ski edit from last year. It was filmed by the same guy. And tell me this years isn’t a step down in quality. Not only in skiing but in filming. I feel like maybe he was limited by the size of her spots or her spot selection but it definitely isn’t up to par with what I’ve come to expect from him as a filmer/editor nor her as a competitor in real ski.

Yeah not saying it wasn’t enjoyable, but I’ve seen what both Taylor and Gavin are capable of on skis/behind the lens and this was definitely a let down for me.

I share the common opinion in this thread about Hackels and Peybens masterpiece of an edit. The cinematography is just something else and it makes the part a timeless piece of art. The first shot got me so hooked and the whole filming, framing and editing of the video completeley stood out for me. I also got mindblown by AHalls crazy part with all the hammers he threw down. For me its also Hackel and AHall battling out the Gold medal.

As a big fan of Ferdis skiing i was super hyped to see his real ski part as well. Especially since I did not know he was in Real Ski till i heard Wallisch mention it in the XGames commentary. I really liked his part and i think its a strong contender in the field. I would also see Ferdi and Lupe battling for the Bronze medal.

Regarding the debate about the park shot in Ferdis edit:

I also was curious and wanted to see what Ferdis part would look like without the Stubai Shot and just cut it out. Thought i would share it with you guys. I like the part more without the parkshot even if ithe shot is a mega dope dub bio super capped blunt with a textbook landing. The shot came in so random it kinda killed the real ski vibe for me. Without the parkshot i get the same vibes i get from the Mango Real Ski videos. Watch the edited version and be your own judge.

Honestly 1000% times better, and while I think his original edit will still get third. I think this modified edit is actually a lot closer of a call between him and lupe for third

Agreed. There some things about his I loved but also other things that were such big deductions they removed his chance of getting on the podium
 
Hackel all the way. The tricks, filming, and editing were all top notch. That shit has me yearning for the simple life of babushka clad finnish grandmother. It was god damned beautiful and made me feel something that none of the other edits did. for 2nd and 3rd I'd say its a toss up between AHall and Ferdi.
 
Props to hackel for actually keeping it in the streets. Seemed like everybody else modified their edit but hackel stuck to the og realski style. I think we all want him to win but xgames is all about spin to win so ahall will prob take gold, or hell maybe even ferdi

Besides the front flip landing thing, all the bc jump tricks were not very creative. Like they were cool tricks but still jump tricks that have been done before. Real ski should be all about creativity and that’s what the street forces. It makes you use your creative side of your brain unlike a bc jump

I mean you're cherry picking shots to call "uncreative." As a whole his segment has a lot of unique and creative tricks.
 
Stupid contest with not all street shots, throw this one away completely irrelevant when you have to compare everything and honestly switching from street to backcountry to park in a 90sec clip looks bad in general.

Its unbelievable the shit you guys are all talking on some of these videos. For one, this contest barely even happened so be hyped it did. And to dog on any of these 6 skiers just blows my mind. Like who the fuck are you to be talking so much shit for a shot someone put in or a spot someone chose. Be lucky you were just given 6 90 sec videos that were filmed during a global pandemic.. Not to mention the crazy lack of snow all over the US during the filming period. These skiers and filmers literally kill themselves to deliver you guys free content with the uncertainty of placing top 3. Compare them all you want but don't be a straight up dickhead when doing it. This is the shit that makes these guys not want to do it again or continue to grow our sport.

Saw this on Hackels story through a friend and think he makes a good point. Real ski isnt what urban skiing is really truly about. Xgames does a great job with it and we can all enjoy it thoroughly, but the true spirit of urban skiing exists through full parts like zootspace, the others that he mentions, and many more. 994884.png

Yeah he’s right too. Full length films always capture the whole art of it all. 90 seconds is a highlight reel compared to most good street films

After rewatching multiple times, I'm petty confident in my lineup

1) Ahall

2) Hackel

3) Lupe

Ferdi is probably my favorite skier right now but besides his opener and ender, his entry felt a bit underwhelming. I think it's mostly the spot selection that didn't do it for me. All in all some very solid edits, congrats everyone !
