RANT: Ski Instructors

Everyone hates on patrollers for everything, but what about the instructors? I can't even begin to count the number of times I've been stopped by the ski patrol, and have their lecture start with "that ski instructor up there told me" not "I saw you". I haven't taken a beneficial lesson in forever from them, all they do is bitch me and my friends out. WTF? go back to teaching your gaper students and don't worry about me.

hey we're not all so bad. there are as many dick ski instructors as there are in any other profession.

hey dont be hating you once were one of those little anoying kids that cut people of with your giant train of people snaking down the hill

represent TIM

I don't go to a ski patroller, I'll talk to you myself. I like my hill

safe, and if I see someone being careless, I'm going to do

something about it.

true dat. i dont give a shit what you do when im teachin cause once im off the job im probably gonna doin something that will get me chewed out too.

Not all instructors are dicks. I only do it cause I get tons of free/wicked cheap stuff and get to ski free. Plus my boss is the coolest guy ever and drinks blue ribbon and talks about screwing girls all day. And his 5 year old son is just about the best racer in his age group in the nation. Oh, did I mention the kid almost has 270s on down?

First off most ski instructors don't have pass taking abilities...

Secondly,

Little kids or beginner skiers are always so afraid of people flying by them...they fall unpredictably, and turn at random...It really doesn't help their confidence when people are flying by them...we are the ones who get sued if they get hurt....

I've had all kinds of people run into my students...it sucks to try to get them to go skiing after that...they are so scared and for a good reason....

And finally, I don't know if instructor jackets look like bull's eyes but fuck...I've had so many people run into me when I'm jst skiing...not ever have I taken their pass away or let a ski po take their pass away....I give them a good talking to and expect that they learned their lesson...I mean seriously, how embarrassing would it be to run into a ski instructor...

Hey, no need to blanket hate any mountain profession, most instructors are really cool, and some patrollers just go blow shit up and ski all day. hater.

The other day a ski instructor was lecturing me on the lift about skiing too fast. I was thinking what the fuck I dont even think you've seen me skiing. Anyways I just kind of put up with it because she had like 50 years on me haha. Oh and she talked crap to me when I told her Id only taken 1 lesson. If I took a ski lesson itd be fucking awesome for the instructor, a couple hours of ripping snow for cash.

You do understand that ski instructors take lessons...they are called clinics...you can take them too...make you a way better skier....

Im sure they would, but I foresee myself doing any for $$ reasons (Im assuming it costs quite a bit) and well ya know I dont really think it would be that fun. Ski class never really appealed to me, for better or worse id rather just go my own way.

whatever man ive never had a serious issue with ski instrutors or ski patrol. Im kind of tired of all the hate ski patrol gets... On a storm day they have to wake up at like 5 get out there hike around throwing bombs for hours (that takes a fucking lot of energy) then they get to deal with injuries all day and everyone seems to hate them for no reason... They make like 14-20 bucks an hour and for the work they do that nothing. Its a hard fucking job and its there responsibly to let your ass known when your doing something stupid. I for one would not want to deal with broken femurs making grown men scream or any of the shit they do. And 90% of the time if they get on your case you truly deserve it.

I've never had a bad experience with ski or board instructors, I find they're pretty sensible

I took a lesson once and I found my instructor was really interesting and nice, and I'm thinking about taking the level one course next year.

The instructors at my hill are pretty chill. I ride with a lot of the boarders when they're not instructing...

WHY would you hate on ski instructors?

a) Alot of ski instructors (especially at big mountains) instruct so they can live up there and do what they love (skiing (which they like as much as you))

b) If you're being a dickass, dont bitch about being called out on it

c) Stop hating on hard workers

Oh I have another story about some snowboard instructors. I was at Solitude for a trip and it was a sick powder day. I was at the summit and there were 3 snowboard instructors sitting there bitching about how they didnt like powder. This blew my mind so I just sat there and listened to them for a bit in utter awe. I mean, solitude doesnt have a park so I guess they just like ripping groomers?~

I instruct and true there are a few fuckheads, but there are fuckheads anywhere you work. A lot of the people I work with love skiing and hate the whole 'twinkie CSIA' side of skiing. For the main part I love instructing cos I get to shred with super cool local kids and get paid for it.

why are you ripping past instructors anyways? are you trying to impress the gapers or something, go ski some more gnar anyways.

If you wonder where ski hills make all their money, it's through ski instructors.

I could be driven there at 6 in the morning to teach a lesson, and if nobody showed, I would only get payed for the 15 minutes that I waited for them, and the hill would keep the extra money they make.

correction, 5 year old in question is the number one ranked nastar racer in the country under 7 years old, won last years 6 and under division by 9 seconds one week after his 4th birthday. quite a claimer though

bumping an old thread yet again. My mom is making me be a ski instructor this year seeing that i talked her out of it last year and said that i would do it this year. but anyway, i dont want to be teaching all the time and i want to have some freeski time, and what i mean by freeski time is not skiing in uniform, and skiing in my outerwear, which i just got all new stuff this year. i dont want my new jacket and pants to just sit at my house all winter and just break them out on the few times i go up north. so to all of you instructors out there, do you get at least a couple of hours of freeski time everyday? my mountain has regular lessons from 9 - 1 so ill get like 3 hours to ski if im lucky. but i dont want to get stuck in 2:00 lineup with a bus load of never ever indian skiers. thanks for any help.

yeah, my job is really chill. if i go in and tell my boss straight up that i dont want to work, hell usually pull some strings and let me ski for the day, unless they really need my help. plus, days you dont work, you can wear whatever you want to the hill.

yeah just make excuses. that what i did last year. I worked the whole season and made a total of 360.64 and my friend worked half the season and made 1200 dollars. Just tell your boss that if he doesnt need youd rather not work

The worst thing about instructing to me is the 4th grade thing they have here, a bunch of kids that have never been skiing before all at the same time, usually a group of like 60 kids, 7 instructors, and the bunny hill the entire day. (How do you make these stop?, or.... Can I use poles so I can stop easier??) Errrr.... end rant

this doesnt really apply to all instructors, but it was a group of instructors that got me into newschool. i was like 11 at the time, and i skied with them and got pretty good. then they all went to college...

so yeah, instructors can be really cool. you just gotta find the right ones.

to the kid who bumped this

i work at mt snow, and i only work on saturdays/holidays, last year i logged over 100 on mountain days, while going to school, and another job. so if you want it, you can do it.

There are nice and bad people in every profession. Some are jaded, some are cool, and you always have to understand that there will be that mix.

Power trips are ridiculous.

Actually Scott, in Alberta you would have to be payed for at least three hours. Are you teaching? Because if you are you're hill is screwing you, illegally.
I think what needs to be added is that I have a good feeling those of you getting chewed out by instructors have two common factors involved.
a. Instructor is OLD. b. You deserve it.
If the instructor is old enough to be your parent or in a lot of cases grandparent, you should really treat them like they are. They are JUST OLD, TEENAGERS AND THEIR ODD WAYS AND THEIR FAT SKIS SCARE THEM.
I'm also guessing that you ride at a small hill. Staff at big mountains are normally there because they fucking love skiing and make it a lifestyle. That makes you, the weekend warrior a huge gaper by comparison.

Im an instructor and if you were to cut me off on accident (I decide if it was an accident or not) I'd give you dirty look a politley shout "watch for student traffic" If you did it on purpose when I caught up to you (ok little jonny this is how you bomb a trail) Id politley tell you to watch out if you gave me lip Id chew your ass out. second time (more likley than you would think) I take your pass (I dont have that authority but I've done it in the past and got away with it) or if your a season passer I just make your season really suck (you'll get charged xtra for alot of stuff and have have your DINs fucked with regularly)

i just hate it when your ripping down a hill that is "for experts" the you get cut off or get a little close to an instructor and they give you shit cuz they have little kids..its like WTF then dont take themm here obs people are gonna be going fast and ripping.!!!! but if im on a bunny hill id expect to get told and glared at.

Nah dude im a ski intructor and i dont rat people out ever!.. we dont waste our freeskiing time hunting people down for skiing fast nd shit

is it hard to get a job as a ski instructor at a mountain in USA? i live in norway and been thinking about teaching there. and how much is the usual salary? thanks for answers

i feel ya dude...but they arnt all bad. what bugs me is i teach in the park....like intro to the park....and other instructors are not supposed to bring their kids in there. i mean they can if they are certified in the park....but no one is. and what bugs me is when i am teaching my kids about waiting and not snaking people and looking before you leap and inspecting every feature and a duchebag instructor with a big group of kids who want ot hit a jump go through and hit everything the wrong way. hit [eople. dont wait turns and do the opposite of everything i am telling my kids. but then i explain to the head of ski school that so and so was not teaching in the park appropriately and teaching the oppoiste of what i was and confusing my kids and endangering theirs....adn then a guy who had been working there for liek 25 years got reamed a new asshole! it was classic!!!

Well, I hate self-righteous people who think its their "obligation" to be an incredible tool. haha

ur an asshole

stop hating

there not really dicks at all so many of them at my mtn are so chill and cool people there are some older folks who can get annoying sometiems and yes the snaking groups are anoying but hey, you gotta learn some how glad to c a new generation of kids thats gunna be tearin it up soon. and if they tell you to slow down or something its prob cause u were goin fast in a slow zone or some gay shit but if there group gets in the way or something thats not ur fault the instructor should no better so fuck them

i was gonna tell you how not every instructor is a homo, but there is a fair few of em out there. but it seems almost every reply has already done that...

yea i ski at Mount Southington in CT real small mountain, i know about every person that works there, my dad has been an instructor there for like 15 years so im sure i can get something worked out. im gonna see if i can only work like the main shift on the weekends and thats it. i like being able to just go out and ski, and not with a black instructor jacket and black pants.

yea man when I tought at whistler I had a crew of a bunch of little kids, they get fucking terrified when someone flies out of the trees and nearly misses them. They most likely arent trying to be dicks they are just worried that one day you'll do the same thing but this time hit the kid, kid has a concussion and dies, and your life is fucked. for your own good dude.

ok, so I feel for you if you have a home mountain where new schooling isnt quite as accepted as in most places. I really do.

But if you are being a moron and getting caught doing something you shouldnt do, I have zero sympathy for you. Furthermore, if you can not outwit a fucking lowly ski facility employee, I for sure would just rather have your dumb ass off the mountain.

Get over it.

usually i have no problems with instructors but as meggers said when they bring their kids into the park that just pisses me off there is nothing worse than getting snaked by a bunch of little kids and then having to wait like 20 minutes because you can't see the last jump so you have no idea if they're still in the landing or not
