RANT: Ski Instructors

I'm an instructor and I want to make one thing very clear: when I am responsible for any student under the age of 18, it is my first and foremost duty is to keep them protected on the mountain and keep their safety first above ALL. If there is someone skiing recklessly, you better believe that I will alert patrol or give them a warning myself. Regardless if I am freeskiing or in uniform, I always uphold safety and caution to the HIGHEST standard; I have seen too many accidents out of carelessness and lack of safety both on and off the job and I am not afraid to do something about it.

And just like anyone else, instructors are part of the team that make a resort work; all departments have to work together to make it work!!! I became an instructor because of the amazing benefits, to live the mountain lifestyle, option to progress in my own skiing ability, and the great feeling that comes with teaching someone something that I love! I agree there are definetly those who have been "instructing for too long" or have a "hot head" about their abilities, but you will see that anywhere, just with skiing it is more prevalent because it's such a universal sport.

take that and think on it next time you want to disrespect.

ha ha..... thunder ridge........

Enjoy wasting away at that dump hole of a hill. Enjoy skiing on a 3 feet wide track surrounded by grass and there no existant park filled with some of the biggest tools on earth skiing and snowboarding thinking they are the shit, when in reality they are so bad its rediculous. Not to mention its pretty overpriced. Thank god for ski team iw ould never touch that mountain again in my life

It would be silly to expect instructors to high five you and your buddies for skiing "recklessly" (skiing at high speeds close to them, no problem going fast, just do it on the complete opposite side of the run - no need to be going mach 500 around a beginning or intermediate class like you're turning around a GS gate) around their class of groms or as you put it "gaper skiers" that would potentially cause harm to their class of students. Remember, you were once a "gaper skier" and your parents (maybe, mine didn't - I didn't start skiing until my early 20s) paid money and took you to the mountain so that you would have a chance at learning an awesome sport in a somewhat controlled environment and put faith in someone to teach you the skills you needed to enjoy skiing safely. They did not take you to the mountain and sign you up for lessons so that you would be terrorized by older kids showing off to their friends or some female they spotted. I agree there are some instructors out there with the god-complex, but keep in mind every where you go someone's going to be "that guy". I was an instructor for a very short time a couple seasons ago when the mountain was super busy and it's stressful enough keeping an eye out on 5-10 little kids (ranging from 4-12 years of age depending) without having older kids around heckling or being reckless in the beginner area. We were all in the same boat, so before you hate, appreciate what these "gapers" and instructors are trying to accomplish, besides the fact that these "gapers" look up to your abilities. Steeze isn't just the way you ski and the clothes you wear, I definitely think it's in your attitude and how you treat the mountain and others while you're there. I'm not going to harp too much tho - because I'm guessing you're probably in your teens and I was super anti-authority/do what I want when I was between 15-18 and definitely didn't see the merit in behaving differently than some of those in my peer group.

Fuck you dude no instructor is being a dick they are just looking out for their kids on the mountain and making sure there aren't any dumb asses like you around. If you were doing something dumb like bombing through a group of kids then why shouldn't i stop you why shouldn't I get ski patrol. At least we are doing something for the sport teaching kids to be as stoked on skiing as we are. I'm sure your a fine skier and don't need beneficial lessons but why would an instructor bitch you and your friends out I am confident nothing like that happened and you were just looking for an excuse to hate. And calling a kid a gaper makes me question you. You are most likely an insecure bitch if you are calling some four year old a gaper. Get off of NS and find a real reason to hate. /rant

When I was younger I got my coaching level 1 and heard instructing level 1 was worth getting as well (Canadian system). I did get it my instructors, but not after they failed me on the skiing portion. I'll always hate em for that. Soon-to-be instructors aren't the greatest skiers so I'm not trying to claim when I say I was the best skier in my group. So they explained to me that it was due to my attitude. Well congrats, I never ended up instructing (or coaching for that matter), but finally convinced my parents to let me quit racing to just fucking ski.
