Rant About Whatever

I fucked it up.

I need to find better studying tactic. It seems like studying the whole course on a day before the exam doesn't work well.

I get avarage grades with that tactic but that is not what I'm used to get.

I don't know how you guys set up your math courses but go to all the study sessions, do all the study sessions and write your own "cheat sheet" of commonly used formulas/fully worked out problems so you can plug new numbers into.

Math in college got hella hard for me but I just started treating it like a mystery to be solved

I missed like 2 classes during this course. Wrote notes and few examples how to use the formulas. We have an app to use during exam that basically ha almost every formula you need. My biggest problem is that I get lost after few steps of using the formula. So I just have grind more.

In terms of studying my biggest problem is that I don't do it enough and when I do it it's not very efficient.

I have to go to a boring ass literature lecture again. I hope this lecturer doesn't have as strong accent as the last one so I could maybe understand something.

Was in LA today and gf was like “let’s go thrifting”. Whatever- guess that’s what people out here do, so I tagged along.

y’all the thrift stores out here are fucking insane, there’s straight up designer on the racks???

Fuckin insane- there were prada dress shirts, and stone island knit sweaters next to old anime t shirts and Nike hoodies.

Snagged a nice ass Palace hoodie made with some heavy French terry cotten for not even $30, gf got a Harley Davidson sweater.

Nice day at the thrifts ngl.

We're doing year end reading benchmark testing for students and the school is refuses to use the legally required Spanish language version of the test for our students who are newcomers (ie. came to the country within the past 6 months) because it would mean parsing two data sets instead of one. Nevermind that the data for these students would be junk data compared to what we could learn about their first language literacy level to establish their familiarity with deconstructing texts and reading comprehension from testing in their first language.

I'm illiterate in Spanish, doesn't mean I'm illiterate and knowing my English skill base would definitely help an instructor guide my Spanish language acquisition.

most schools in the US really drop the ball when it comes to kids that aren't proficient in English, it's a real shame.

the us was founded on the principal of allowing people into the new world. thus why there is no official language or religion of the us. it was so important that it was the first amendment lol

It was founded that way when there was a mad dash for colonies by several European powers. There was lots of space and few (non native) people so they wanted as many immigrants as possible to help fill the country up and hold the land.

Now we have more than 300 million people living here and the desireable parts of the country feel more than adequately full. When surveyed about where in the world they want to live, 40% of respondents worldwide said the USA.

That's over 3 Billion people who would choose the US over literally anywhere else (including just staying in place). We can't handle that. I don't want even 10% more people in the country, much less 1000%

It's also wild how slow we are to teach a second langiage. I wish i was better at other languages. We didn't have a real spanish teacher till 10th grade lol. And had only started dabbling a year or 2 before.

I def feel like a dumbass when I travel and people know like 4 languages

If it makes you feel better a lot of european languages are similar enough that once you know one learning others come easier with some exceptions like Finnish.

And euros get exposed to other languages growing up which doesn't happen in the US except for Spanish in some states and Canada in the Maritimes where ppl are actually bilingual. French education sucks here too

I'ts mandatory for me to study 3 languages. Lot of people study 4.

I was supposed to start Germany last autumn, but I heard the teacher sucked so I dropped the course before it even started.

I think everyone should study another language, But It's not easy if your teachers suck.

Hungarian is such a fucked up language I don’t even want to think about it. I got a cousin’s friend who speaks Hungarian natively and you can hear the fucked-upness from just walking by, I tried learning little bit just cause I was curious and the learning curve was fucking vertical. Never ever again I despise the Hungarian language

Y’all have a different word for ATM. That’s the only meaningful difference I can hear. It’s like the difference between Scottish and us english. Everything else is just some cultural identity issues. I’m done hating for tonight

Are you actually dutch or do you have dutch heritage?

I opened my philosophy book for the 2nd time few hours before my exam. Turns out the book was a gold mine of information about the subject of the course. Maybe I should have studied earlier than few hours before the exam.

I might be doomed.

I was telling a coworker that one of my grandparents spoke Occitan and described it as a French person trying to speak Portuguese and Spanish at the same time with French phonics.

It's sad too because these kids are motivated with family support and really want to learn English; but throwing a standardized test written for native English speakers at them isn't going to show me anything aside from the fact that they can't yet access the test they were given. These students' teachers next year will have no idea what their background knowledge is in their native language, which means wasted time teaching kids who already know the alphabet and phonics in L1. The native language test would tell you if a kid knows how to structure an essay, write in different genres of academic writing, etc. but we don't use it. I picked up "measure twice, cut once" when I worked in the trades which applies to why you'd want to test a student in both languages. I can't cut a service plan and goals for the school year for a student if I only have half the picture of their abilities.

It gets into civil rights violations as well where these tests are used for determining special education services, so a kid can be placed in separate SPED classrooms without a learning disability and stall their English language development for years because SPED targets different growth areas than language acquisition.

It's a shitty system that violates kids rights every day and festers because school districts know most migrant parents do not have the financial or legal resources to file lawsuits against the districts screwing their kids over, or they have a fear of speaking out because it might hurt their application for citizenship. It is a shame too because meeting with these parents it's clear they are heavily involved in their kids' lives, want to be active in the school community, have dreams of their kids going onto college or into the trades and out of poverty. Administration just doesn't care.
