PSIA Park & Pipe @ Okemo

Are there any instructors on here that are going to Okemo in 2 weeks for the Park & Pipe Accredidation? If so when and where did you do your basic?

I just called PSIA in Albany, and I am faxing up my info now, so I'm in. But there is a problem. We need at least 6 people to attend for PSIA to not cancell the event, and right now, I'm only the fourth one to sign up.

People don't realize that we (instructors) need to work with PSIA, and get people involved in this accredidation program to legitimize our sport to the ski area management's and their insurance companies. Come on people, I know there are other instructors on here too, WE NEED TO GET INVOLVED and push this through.

I took the first accredidation program last year (the first time it was offered), at Okemo, and we didn't have too many people attend (unfortunately). Because of this, all the other Freestyle/Freeride programs were canceled. Lets not let this happen this year. There is still time to get in. If you took the Okemo event last year, or the Mountain Creek event this year, why not take the next step. If you know how to contact people that were at either of these events, please do so and let em know that we need people to sign up. The main office in Albany told me that if we don't have 6 people total by Friday, it will most likely be cancelled, so lets get on the ball.

I also took the first basic class, last Jan at Okemo. Where you at that one?

This sucks becuase they already cancelled it once last year for low attendance! I do not want to wait another year. I am on the list, I sent my money in 2 months ago.

C'mon people. This is a really fun event!

For those of you who think PSIA is a joke...

This event is NOTHING like normal PSIA BS. It is a ton of fun with no crap. In the basic event we worked on 180's, 360's, Superpipe, Quarterpipe, Picnic tables, small rails, table top jumps, hip jumps, and carving switch. You all know that Okemo has like some of the best parks and pipes on the east coast... we session them for 2 full days.

The dates are 2/14-2/15. Which is basically 2 weeks away. The cost was $150.00 for the 2 days, which includes 2 all day lift tickets. At Okemo I think the lift ticket is worth almost $60.00 a day.

do you need the basic to go for the accredation? (sp)

I would totally go for it, but I've not taken the basic. Idk what/where the basic is.

I am not sure how strict the are being with the int event. I would definately call them and just tell them you want to sign up for event #232. Let me know if you need the contact info.

yeah the deadline was the 20th of jan.

^^ its says is open to Level 1, 2, & 3 members, but i'd call and see what they say. 518-454-6095

Yeah, the deadline was 1/24. They are still holding it open to get more people, but I am not sure if they are charging a late fee.

I had to pay a late fee ($25), but even at $175 it isn't a bad price (plus if you just took the Mountain Creek event, they might waive the late fee.

Unfortunately, yes they accredidations need to be taken in order so you would have had to taken the first one already.

skier150, I think we might be driving Albany nuts (at least a little), I just called to verify my fax got there yesterday, and was asking how big the Mountain Creek event was (I guess only 4 people - so hopefully we can pull two people from it). The office was very helpful to me, but I think they are getting a little overloaded with trying to push this through. I'm hoping that even if we are short (only 4, maybe 5 people) they will still put it on to shut us up.

BTW, got an email from Marky, and it sounds like he'll be going too (I guess he has flights lined up already, so it would be a shame for him to drop so much money to get there to only have it cancelled).

I sent them an email this morning pleading my case. I have not heard back. Is Marky already signed up, or would he be one of the ones we need? What happened to the other younger guy that was there that week? I think he was from NH.

Mark said he was signed up and flights were booked, so 3 of the 4 currently signed up would be, you, me and Mark, not sure about who the fourth would be. But what doesn't make sense to me is why they would hold the Mountain Creek Beginer Accredidation with only 4 people attending, but they are tempted to cancel the intermediate with 4 people already signed up to attend.

I don't think PSIA could have expected the push to make this event happen that we have already made, I'm just hoping they see it as a possitive and not as a negative.

Yeah, and that the deadline for this event was 2 weeks before the Mtn Creek event even happened. I am hoping that they have waited this long because they do not want to cancel it again. If they allowed it to happen in NJ, then maybe we have a chance. I do not have a problem only taking it with 4 people, especially since at least 3 of us were in it together before.

what is it u guys r talking about exactly?

PSIA has a accreditation program for Park and Pipe. There are 3 steps that you must take to become accredited, basic intermediate, and advanced. They show you how to do things, and also how to teach someone how to do things. It is a lot of fun and a great experience. We took the first part last year, but PSIA cancelled the second 2 parts. We have are signed up for this year, but now they might cancel it again unless we get at least 1 or 2 more people to sign up.

Any other questions just let me know.

We just got free tickets to Okemo... hehe fun.

I JUST GOT THE NEWS FROM PSIA:

I HAVE GREAT NEWS FOR YOU......

This event IS going to be held.

That decision was made this week for sure!!

Have fun, and Have a great season!

Go to your local mountain and ask for an application. Most places will then require you to take a Instructors Training Course, basic stuff and it usually take 4 days or so. Then you can join PSIA and participate. The mountain will usually give you a free seaosn pass and discounts on other stuff. You can also get Proform which is usally 30-50% off list on hardgoods.

I just did my 2nd Pipe and Park clinic - they are so awesome! Our clinician was really, really good. We worked on everything, but spent the most time in the pipe. I'm from Idaho, and our freestyle programs are still kind of gaining momentum. We have some great childrens programs, and its cool to be a part of the movement and next generation of freeskiers.
