PSA: You Can Die Hitting Urban

so this is just a little reminder out there to everyone hitting urban and especially younger kids. A good friend and amazing person passed away yesterday due to a brain injury at the age of 19 from hitting an urban DFD. Will had a few beers and his ski came off while hitting a rail. Was a pretty tame fall compared to most and he as well as us didnt think he hit his head that hard. He continued to hit the rail a few more times, went in and had some food and then went home for the night. When our friend went to pick him up to go touring the next morning Will was found passed out in puke and unable to awake. Will was immediately airlifted to the hospital in a coma with brain hemorrhaging awaiting surgery the next morning. He never awoke and was pronounced braindead yesterday afternoon. His 20th birthday is today.

This is the first death i've ever heard of from hitting urban and i think the message should be spread what can happen and how dangerous it really is. He was an amazing skier, not your average amateur and this tragedy occured. He was not wearing a helmet, if he was, this might not have happened. It seems to be that helmets are showing up less and less in urban videos but i please PLEASE urge everyone to think of what could happen if you dont wear one, and do hit your head. This was a huge freak of nature but it proves that shit can happen. Please use good judgment, and wear a lid when your hitting anything, this was a huge wakeup call to everyone around our college and i hope its a wake up call to alot of people. Dont let it come to having this happen to you or one of your friends. Be safe. Brain injuries are the #1 killer in Canada.

peace and love, RIP Will Schooler, you'll be missed by all.

yep. words can't describe how amazing a person Will was. so down to earth and so easy going. the type of guy you want to be around as much as possible. miss you Will. RIP.

Skied with the guy a handful of times last year - seemed like an incredible individual. It kills me to hear that this happened, especially in my home town. My thoughts are with his family and everyone in Nelson right now. RIP Will.

Only problem with Stept in my mind.

Kids will be watching their movies and believe that they can do the same if they have a few. I've seen it happen first hand.

Play within your limits kids

+vibes to you/friends/and his family

It seems you hear about a lot more back country deaths but its totally true that the risk in urban is nothing to scoff at. This is terrible

damn, so sorry for your loss man.

Wear a helmet people, how many times do we need to hear stories like this before people will get the point that it will save your life.

Also, if you hit your head, and feel even slightly concussed, go to the ER and get checked out. Better safe than sorry and it could mean the difference between waking up or not the next day.

I'm happy I was raised with the idea that wearing a helmet is always important when skiing

Its just a habit now, and I dont see why anybody wouldnt wear one

Something like this could happen to anyone, and nobody wants to be a part of that situation

R.I.P.

Really sad, he will be missed.

Lessons to take away from this tragedy:

-It doesn't take a spectacular crash to kill you. You aren't invincible.

-Use good judgement when you're doing anything risky.

-Protect yourself.

-Don't take head injuries lightly. It doesn't hurt to go to the emergency room and get checked out, even if you feel ok.

RIP. eye-opener for sure.props to OP for writing this. your homey just passed, and dispite the hard time you are going through, you took the opportunity to share knowlege and show kids this aint no fuckin joke.
SIP i will start wearing a helmet from now on

doesnt even matter if they can or cant. it takes one fall.. this could have been martini. just takes one bouncing of the head off the concrete or rail.

RIP WILL.

wow man, this is truly tragic to hear. Urban is a serious thing, many factors come into play and I countlessly try and tell my riders to wear a helmet and even mouthguard but its not easy to persuade. This is a very unfortunate thing to happen to someone. Hope this opens some eyes.

SIP

I heard the sad news through one of my good friends who happened to go to school and know Will ...super sad

SIP bro.

SIP man. This was something I think a lot of people needed to hear, myself included. Thanks OP for looking out for all of us.
