well right before you do serious activity like that, you want to be carried over the whole time with your energy. fats are generally not a good idea because while they do slow digestion, they hamper your ability.
the best thing i would suggest would be a pre-workout meal of 40 grams of slow burning carbohydrates and 20 grams of fast acting protien. basically what that means is have at least 40 grams of whole grains, oatmeal, sweet potato, shredded wheat, etc, and also at least 20 grams of protien in the form of a whey protien shake. for a full game i feel that you might want to increase those two by a little bit at least, but its up to you.
that is proven to work very well for fueling during intense workouts, especially during things like weight training. eating a fast burning carb like gatorade and a bagel will lead to an insulin spike, causing problems for you; 1 it triggers fat gain (which isnt good any time but especially right before activity), and 2 it will cause you to burn that energy quickly, leaving you depleted.
you would be amazed at how well that the meal i eat before i workout or go to a practice works. i feel completely energized and full just right so that i can really do well.
if you're interested in supplimenting, i suggest an NO product which instead of a sugary energy drink that will leave you drained, will open up your veins and pump blood through your muscles, instantly giving you greater strength and endurance, as well as energy and focus. such products are N.O. Xplode and White Flood. while they can be taken with food, they give biggest pumps and stuff when taken on an empty stomach, meaning you ate 2 hours previously.
